I read the 19th Wife this year for book club. I enjoyed it, but thought the author didn't know when to quit. Would have been better ended a little earlier.

Rita I'm about half way through The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It's really good so far. It took me a little bit to get immersed into it, as I've never been to Sweden, but the imagery of the landscape, etc. is quite vivid so I was able to transport myself rather easily.

Andrew (dad-man) | 155 comments I'm reading Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, but it is only a 2-day read. Would have been one, but my daughter wouldn't take her nap yesterday. :-) Soon as I finish this, though, it will be The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I have had it forever, and I really want to get it read because I want to get my hands on his second one. Then, it will be Pride And Prejudice And Zombies. FINALLY!!! Hehe.

I think everyone will agree with you on that. It took my a while to get into it but once you pass all the Sweedish Business Jargon it gets good. I have been waiting for the second book from the library.

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I finished up The Shadow of the Wind and started Wildflower An Extraordinary Life and Untimely Death in Africa. Very interesting story. Makes me want to watch the movie, Out of Africa, again.

I had never heard of or seen the book but it seems to be popular! What do you think about it susanna?"

I finished it a few days ago and I gotta say that it was a little frustrating to read but in the end I enjoyed the complexity of it very much. I especially enjoyed the fifth section, probably because I'm on a sort of a scifi kick at the moment but if it's not your thing, don't let that put you off.

The book was August's group read for the 50 Books' Book Club group. If you're interested, there is a discussion thread under Monthly Discussions.

message 13909: by Carol (new)

Carol Almost finished with the 19th Wife. It has an interesting format and it is holding my interest. Still working Moby, very slow going. Started Little Women for september group read. Looks like I will need to find Graveyard Book at library. I really do not want to purchase it.

message 13910: by Johanna (new)

Johanna Moran (johannamoran) | 19 comments Akittykat, Kudos to you for tackling Moby Dick. Melville was big on symbolism, particularly Christian symbolism. My biggest problem with him: Few or no female characters.

message 13911: by Carol (new)

Carol There are definetly funny parts in the book I find myself chuckling at.

message 13912: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) just finished Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos and am giving it five stars. As in her other book, Marisa De Loa Santos builds great characters that you cannot help but admire. Her writing style is fantastic. I really hope she continues to write novels and not just poetry. I am really looking forward to reading more from this author.

I love her writing too! It's not just cick lit It's well developed characters I can picture them perfectly in my mind so easily!
I also just finished The time Travelers wife! What a well written book! It starts out going back and forth in time then it just becomes normal. I feel like Henry and Claire are good friends of mine that I miss! LOL!
My favorite book of 09 is hands down The Help by Kathryn Stockett!! Just had to share that!

I am not a happy camper! This book is so good and to have a few pages almost impossible to read is just not fair! I am going to write to the publisher!!!!

Oh no Donna, that is horrible! I would definitely let the publisher know, and see if you can return the book to the place you bought it and get a new one....

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments I'm currently reading Retail Hell How I Sold My Soul to the Store Confessions of a Tortured Sales Associate... its great so far! My best friend got it for me at a book show and the author was there and signed it for me saying "Jamie--See you in hell!"

haha. it's actually quite therapeutic to read about other retail hell experiences. It makes me laugh about my own!

Donna, that's so annoying. I had the same experience once when I was reading Lord of the Rings, and those blank pages was smack in the middle of a suspenseful scene! I so wanted to throw the book in anger, then!

Mir Donna, that's so annoying. I had that happen years ago with a Teresa Edgerton novel I bought used. But since you bought your copy new I would think they should take it back even if it has been a long time -- this is a little different from a standard return! Is it otherwise a good book, btw?

Karla,The Glass Castle is one of my most favorite memoirs. Jeannette Walls really deserves a medal for
sharing all those gut-wrenching stories from her childhood. It gives anyone in similar circumstances
hope and determination.

Jamborandi,
How far along are you? I'm starting to listen to the
unabridged audio version in my Audible.com library. It
comes highly recommended by the manager of an independent bookstore near me. Didn't it win the
Pulitzer for fiction this year? or was it the Nat'l Book Award? Getting senile can be so embarrassing.

Thanks! I am now at the third part and I think it is getting much better. It is nice that every part gives you a little clue in how it is linked to the other parts. I think for now I would say I start to like it.
