I'll be sure to write about "Suite Francaise" when I finish!

For me, it's when "that world" becomes my world. I feel my feet racing through that reality. There is such a rush when I know there is nothing else I want to do but be in the moment with a particular book.

For me it's when I am transported to another place or another time. It's when the author engages all of my senses - Kite Runner and Chocolat immediately come to mind.

Marci (iread49) | 215 comments Hi everyone, Iam a new to this group but have been on Goodreads for several months. Reading your comments, I feel like I have found kindred spirits. My floor in front of my book shelves has 8 piles of book about hip high and yet I buy more. Whether it is a favorite author with a new book published or a review read(yes goodreads has contributed to this) I must possess. I share books with my sister and my mom so I have a another route to get my fix.I take great comfort in my books and feel extremely satisfied when I finish a book and can pick another one from my piles. Just finished "I'm Perfect, Your Doomed" by Kyria Abrahams. The book takes a "comic" look at growing up as a Jehovah Witness. Getting ready to Start "Revenge of the Spellmans" New and 3rd in the series. Lisa Lutz is the author. I loved the first 2. I also belone to audible.com So I listen to books while doing computer work, cleaning etc..
Someone mentioned # 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexande McCall Smith. This book was made into a TV sereies to start on HBO March 29th. I do not get HBO but considered it to check out the series since I loved the books. I was happy to discover I can order the series through Verizon Fios demand. I saw a preview last evening . It looks promising! I think I ran out of space. Looking forward to being part of the group. Happy Reading!!!

message 9807: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Welcome, Marci! Nice to see you posting! Regarding the Spellman series, I'm also a big fan. I recently finished Revenge of the Spellmans and, I must say, it was my favorite thus far. I hope you enjoy it!

alicia grant (shesha556) So I finished Secrets in the Attic and now on to the 2nd book.Secrets in the Shadows.I liked it okay.Enough to at least finish the story but not enough to count it as a favorite.

message 9809: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune)
Hi, I liked the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency too. And liked The Good Husband of Zebra Drive. In fact I liked most of them. There is a new one of A. McCall Smith coming out in May I believe.

message 9810: by Claire (new)

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments Welcome, Marci!

I saw where The Friday Night Knitting Club is being made into a movie with Julia Roberts. So that will be next on my list to read. I always like to have read the book before I go to see the movie? Has anyone read this, and if so, did you like it?

message 9811: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just started Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. 62 pages down, 726 to go!

message 9812: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune)
I have heard it is great. I believe there is a sequel to the book.

message 9813: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Mar 25, 2009 10:16AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I read The Friday Night Knitting Club just before Christmas and enjoyed it, Claire.

Sandra - I think the sequel is called Knit Two, but I'm not sure if it's out yet.

Edited to add: Knit Two is out, apparently but won't be in paperback until November.

message 9814: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I have read and finished Cold Granite - Stuart MacBride & An Eye for an Eye - Malorie Blackman and now I am reading Blood Test - Jonathan Kellerman & 8th Confession - James Patterson

Paula | 1098 comments Dar said: So, from the 4 books, which did you like best.

I really liked 2 of the 4, "Twilight" and "Eclipse". It's hard to choose which I liked better because "Twilight was the first one that got me interested, and "Eclipse" was exciting to me. I couldn't wait to see what would happen in the final chapter of the series.

message 9817: by JuliAnna (new)

JuliAnna | 85 comments I'm halfway through Julian Barnes'Arthur and George, which got off to a slow start. It seemed an uneasy mix of fiction and biography, but things are picking up. I've also started Bolano's The Savage Detectives A Novel. The translator, Natasha Wimmer, provides a nice introduction to Bolano and his work. This was a big help given my limited familiarity with Latin American and other Spanish language fiction.

Thanks for the input, Susanna. I'll look forward to reading it. I had heard of Knit Two as well.

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments Fiona wrote: "yay, what you thinking of Memoirs April?"

It's engrossing. I'm not too far in, but I really enjoy the descriptions of her being like water, like her mother and her father being like wood, as is her sister. I thought the translator's note was a nice touch.

Hey guys! I'm reading ICTC because of Fiona. It's due at the library, but whatever, I can only get there on Friday. I'm going to have a pretty big fine by Friday. Oh well.

message 9821: by JuliAnna (new)

JuliAnna | 85 comments Mosca, I'm not sure I would call Water for Elephants light. But, it is one of those books where the narrative pulls you along.

message 9822: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I've started reading The Uncommon Reader A Novella by Alan Bennett and enjoying it very much so far :) I told myself not to borrow anything from the library until I have at least read five books that I own and haven't read yet but I mean...I was in the library, had 30 minutes of free time and I hadn't brought with me Slaughterhouse-5 by Kurt Vonnegut which I am also reading and well... it wasn't as if I was going to just sit and stare at people for 30 minutes :P

message 9823: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I am reading The Game by Diana Wynne Jones. I would recommend you guys try to read at least one of her books if you like fantasy, I don't think you'll be disappointed on anything you manage to get your hands on!

(And we all know Fiona would agree with me :P)

message 9824: by Mosca (last edited Mar 25, 2009 02:27PM) (new)

Mosca | 828 comments JuliAnna,

You're right. I've almost 10 or 20 pages to finish and Water for Elephants is really not the light read I expected. But it is a good book. It has gone very fast; and it is not the struggle that The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay was.

Rebbie, I have the two before When Will There Be Good News and hope to get to them this spring or early summer. I haven't bought Good News yet, but I'm glad to know that you enjoyed it.

message 9827: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Are all the links messed up, or is it me? I've tried to click on "add book/author" and it goes to top of page. When I click on "post" it takes me to the first page where it tells which discussions have new posts. I can't seem to reply to a post and get a quote.

message 9828: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thanks, Fiona. I wondered if it might be me and was looking for confirmation.

Mosca | 828 comments Elizabeth,

Sometimes the thread page takes some time to load fully--particularly if there is a flash program in the advertisement(And if you are on a satelite dish). When the page is still loading, and you initiate the "add book/author" command or the "some html is ok" command, the page quickly completes its loading and you are placed at the the top of the page. This happens to me a lot. Simply scroll down to the bottom of the page--your comment box should still be open and editable. At least that works for me. Good luck.

I finished The Loop by Joe Coomer and really liked it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes their leading men a little goofy, and the leading ladies a little whacky.

I decided to jump into Despair.

message 9831: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I finished The Constant Gardener yesterday. I enjoyed the book much more than the movie. I don't think I even finished watching the movie.

I started The Forgotten Man about the Great Depression, but the 4th Fablehaven book came in the mail today. I may have to change gears and read that one...I've been waiting for it for months.

Now starting Perdido Street Station by China Miéville. This book is one that took me a good while to find a copy. It seems to generate very strong views--some folks really love it; others really dislike it. We'll see how far I get with it.

Hi Kathy and Rebbie,

I am currently reading Case Histories by Kate Atkinson and am loving it so far if that's any inclination towards her other books. "When Will There Be Good News?" is on my to-read list too.

message 9841: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Just finished "Buffalo Lockjaw" and started this morning "Lush Life" by Richard Price. I've heard him do a reading from his and I'm looking forward to it.

message 9842: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I'm trudging through Angela's Ashes and occasionally picking up Bridget Jones: The Edge of reason. I'm also planning on finishing Breaking Dawn sometime soon. I'd like to just be done with the series now.

message 9843: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Yea, trudging is not a good word to have to use when you're describing reading! Although I have to admit for my face-to-face book club I have had books to read that I didn't much enjoy.

message 9844: by Alycia (new)

Alycia (alyciac) | 2907 comments Trying to get through The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories, but it is on CD and none of my CD-ROM drives are cooperating. Grr. Also reading Dogs and Goddesses ... who would have thought there'd be two books with this rather odd title?

message 9845: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Well, with work being so busy, I don't have too much time to really get through these books. While I am enjoying Angela's Ashes, I just feel like I've been reading it forever. And, I'm not necessarily enjoying the whole Twilight series, I feel invested and want to see them through to the end, lol. And, I am enjoying Bridget Jones, but it's my nightstand book, and I get home from work and almost immediately need to go to bed, so I haven't had time to read it since Saturday. Not bad books, just lack of time to read, which makes it hard.

message 9846: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Well, that's better! At least you're enjoying your books--too bad you don't have more time to read.

LOL. I relate to this. I picked up Up A Road Slowly, hoping to just have a quick reread so I could post a review for a friend, but it truly has felt like a slow road. Three days in and I'm only halfway through because of my work schedule and the fact that I'm not good at reading/jogging at the same time. :-)

I'm glad I'm not alone. I'm used to reading much faster, but since there is actually work to do in my office, I haven't been getting any reading done at my desk. But, I can always find a few minutes to hope on GR! And, it doesn't help that I have an 8-month-old at home, so I get almost no reading done there!

Brent Wrote: "I'm currently reading "LAMB: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal" and finding it to be a very fun read."

After good reviews from my sis and dad, I'll be reading this once I finish the three books I'm working on right now. Only fitting for around Easter time, huh?
