Emily, I have Lolita here, but havent read it yet. I have, however, read three other Nabokov novels... and would expect that Lolita will be a great read!

message 9204: by Glenn (new)

Glenn I just read Riddle-Master by Patricia A. McKillip. It's a must-read for anyone who likes high fantasy. I just picked up Titus Andronicus, which is supposed to be Shakespeare's bloodiest work. I'm only 160 lines in and some poor schmuck has already been chopped up. That'll appease the groundlings.

It's one of my faves too, if not my most favourite... I think that everything changed when you read PoA, suddenly it wasn't a comfortable little children's story any more.

One of my favorites too. And I so agree with you Fiona, everything changes with it. And it´s great after reading Chamber of Secrets that I think it´s my less favorite of all.

Nadia A (bagambo) Hey Lori! Yes, Lunar Park is the one with a demon doll that looks like a furby. Crazy! I just finished The Rules of Attractions and it was pretty good. Definitely no American Psycho - which was wickedly interesting.

I can't wait to see Watchmen! We have the book in our bathroom, so I may have to borrow it to read in another room. It seems awkward but my male roomates like to read while they poop, ha ha.

message 9228: by Ann (new)

Ann (lovabook) | 17 comments Hi all,
i went in to the book store to get The Reader but was disappointed at the size of it. I like big fat reads so I get my money's worth. The Reader is as short as a shopping list and as I browsed through it, I had pretty much read it. I was put off by the older woman having an affair with a young boy. Did anyone else feel this way? Years later, the question arises, i she an innocent victim caught up in one of the worst times in modern history? I think not. She had no conscience when she seduced a young boy did she, which makes me wonder at the other things. What do others think? Not withstanding that the storyline is just the vehicle for the bigger questions.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I am finishing up The Vertigo Years Europe 1900-1914. It is really very good. My preliminary rating is 4 stars, but I may have to bump it up to five. Up to 1912 now.

message 9230: by Liz (new)

Liz Fiona wrote: "Finished Like Water for Chocolate - Laura Esqivel. Now reading The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath."
I want to read both of those. I saw you posted a comment right below--was that regarding Like Water for Chocolate?
And April, I don't think it's awkward. A lot of people keep literature in the bathroom--I like to curl up in a hot bath with a good book.

Ann, if you are trying to discuss the novel, you might get better feedback here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

its the link to the "Wanna Discuss This Novel" thread.

JG (Introverted Reader) Back from my working-long-hours-induced-exile!

Finished The Fourth Bear--I just love Jasper Fforde's sense of humor.

Angela's Ashes--Not as depressing as I thought it would be. It was a good read and I'll be hopping over to the discussion thread next.

Finally got started on The Audacity of Hope and I'm about halfway through. Interesting and readable, but I can't read it in big chunks. I'm having to break it up with other books.

I think I'll also start the next in a series of westerns my dad loaned me.

message 9234: by Emily (new)

Emily | 2 comments I am reading Fire Magic by Maria V Snyder. It is the third book in a series and very good so far! The series is fabulous and I am eager to see how it will all end.

message 9235: by Mosca (last edited Mar 05, 2009 08:40PM) (new)

Mosca | 828 comments Just finished The Antelope Wife by Louise Erdrich. I had forgotten how intense her fiction can be.

I gave it five stars. This book is for the courageous because it can be painful to read at times---the powerful prose and intense story line lead the reader through some rough emotional country. But on balance this is a tale of redemption on a most basic human level.

Still not sure what to read next.

message 9236: by Lynai (new)

Lynai I am reading By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Weptby Paulo Coelho. I think I'll like this better than The Alchemist.

message 9237: by JuliAnna (new)

JuliAnna | 85 comments It sounds like a Louise Erdrich novel might make a great group read sometime.

I finished The Invention of Air and Patricia McKillip's Alphabet of Thorn. I recommend the latter to fantasy readers. Now, I'm reading A Short History of Medicine (which is exactly as billed). And, I'm back to The Bridge of Birds, another fantasy novel that is rather unique and very engaging.

JG - I was the same way with AOH. I ended up really liking it, but it took me a long time to get through it and I had to mix it up with other books as well - and normally I'm a one-book-at-a-time kind of gal. :)
