Rebbie | 140 comments this is one of my favorite books. Daughter of Fortune is either before that or after it in sequence. I've read all Allende's books also. Love them.

message 8903: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Sorry to take it back to Stephanie Plum talk but:
Lisa - Definitely Morelli.
I finished Three To Get Deadly yesterday and the library doesn't have any copies of the fourth book available and I'm afraid I will go buy it! So I'm stuck reading boring old If On a Winter's Night a Traveler until I can decide if I want to go to Borders and ruin the progress I've made.

message 8904: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Justine...you should reserve Book 4! Do you just mean that all the copies are checked out?

I have read up through 4...so far the 4th is my favorite.

message 8905: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I looked into reserving it yesterday. They have two copies and neither is due back until at least March 10 (one is March 16). That's TWO WEEKS! Haha. I have no patience for these kinds of things.

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Just started Love Is a Mix Tape Life and Loss, One Song at a Time and I'm only 1 chapter in but I'm already really liking it!

message 8907: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Maybe they'll bring it back early :)

message 8908: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Justine - I'm guessing they don't have the audio version either?

Dorie I only read the first Discworl by Pratchett and though they were also for me a lot of characters and so I really enjoyed it.

Ann I am curious about that one! I have it also to read! You know there is a Scarpetta thread?
Problem is I haven't bought yet her last ones before Scarpetta and I don't want it to tell me some things already...I bought till the important ex-FBI guy died...so there are a couple between.

Handmaid's Tale was just picked by one of my face2face groups - is it good?

I like this type of book, and this book is one of Atwoods better ones. Not going to be a reread for me or anything, but it was good.

Lori, before starting those two stories I already thought I wouldn't like it but my boyfriend said I would according to him. Wow I don't know what story of the same amount of pages took me sooooooo long to finsih it. I just couldn't stand it!!!!! That must have been the only book last year of which people didn't commented: you finished that book already???

message 8920: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) JuliAnna - I just can't get into it. So far, I think the story between the readers is pretty interesting, but I don't care much for the different stories.

Ben Erwin | 3 comments I'm brand new to the group, but I'm about finished with Underworld by DeLillo - not sure what I'll be reading after that.

message 8922: by Alisha Marie (last edited Feb 25, 2009 02:12PM) (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Tick Tock by Dean Koontz and thought it was great. The supporting characters are hilarious and the "horror" aspect of the novel kept me intrigued. I'm glad I own 9 other Koontz books to pick up at my leisure.

Right now, I'm a chapter into Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I'm reading it for the Spring Challenge and decided to start it earlier (making sure I don't pass the halfway mark before March 1st, of course) since I'm also reading The Pillars of the Earth and The Book Thief for the same challenge. I like it so far and hopefully will continue to like it in the 800+ pages.

message 8923: by [deleted user] (new)

I am currently reading The Lucky One, Nicholas Sparks' most recent novel (I have read all his others).

I'll post my reviews along the way, Fiona! I'm sure I will really enjoy it!

Allison (inconceivably) I would really enjoy it if you told her that you hate it.

haha...not really, it is a lovely, lyrical book. I wish I had found it sooner.

message 8927: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'm reading Flower Net by Lisa See. I so loved Snowflower and the Secret Fan that I wanted to read another by this author. Peony in Love was still in hardback at the time and I'm a paperback reader. Anyway, I discovered that Lisa See was a mystery/thriller writer before Snowflower. With my backlog, I'm just getting around to this, but if you liked Snowflower, and you also like mystery/thriller, I think you'll like her Red Prince novels too.

Justine, I guess I just like that sort of thing. I'm sorry you're not enjoying it. It is amazing how quickly a book can go when you love it, and how it can take an eternity if you don't!

message 8929: by Debby (new)

Debby | 3804 comments I just finished reading Eye Contact by Cammie McGovern. It was a 3 star mystery.
I'm now listening to Where the River Ends by Charles Martin (a GR author). I LOVED his book Wrapped in Rain and I'm hoping this one will be just as good!

message 8930: by Rebbie (new)

Rebbie | 140 comments I just got my order from Amazon for OUT OF AFRICA. I watched the movie--AGAIN-- last weekend and was totally taken away by it as I was the other ka-zillion times. Anyone read the book? I'm looking forward to it.

message 8931: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I liked Eye Contact. The mystery was the vehicle of the story, but I felt it was more a story of a single mother caring for an autistic child.

message 8932: by Lori Ann (new)

Lori Ann | 105 comments I'm reading jonathan strange & mr. norrell but i'm afraid i'm not getting very far in it, i'm not totally into it right now but i'm only 70 pages in and nothing has really happend yet.

I'm also reading love in the time of cholera, liking it so far...

I agree. I learned more about autism while reading a mystery. I felt the same way about Curious Incident of the Dog at Midnight.

I'll give it 4 stars once I get around to my review. I enjoyed it, but parts of it were kind of hard to read, mostly when he was talking about how hard life was in the Dominican Republic under a vicious dictator they had.

Jeane,

I was very disappointed in those books also. My step-mother told me that those books are good if you are reading them in a class setting, where the instructor can discuss the nuances and meanings. Really, I just didn't get it.

I've had capture the castle on my shelf for as long as i can remember and still haven't read it. this conversation is certainly going to make me dust it off now.

message 8937: by Liz (new)

Liz It sounds as though I should read the Plum series...
At any rate, I finished The Taming of the Shrew Tuesday Night. I'll start The Tempest next, as well as rereading Frankenstein.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Fi, if I can get a copy of ICTC, then I will read it.

message 8939: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I just finished Star Gazing by Linda Gillard. I highly recommend this book. I have read 3 books by this author and I have loved every one of them. She has extraordinary talent and I really like her writing style. She is part of the Transita publishing in the UK.

Going to start The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love
Would love to hear testimonials on this one.

Mosca | 828 comments Just finished The Piano Tuner A Novel by Daniel Mason. I liked this book.
Another book that catches me deeply. The hero is surprised he is searching for something he was unaware of; so is the reader.

I'll decide this morning what's next. Probably Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold or maybe The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. Still not sure.

message 8941: by Jessica (new)

I am now onto The Given Day by Dennis Lehane.

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments Kellie; The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love is hilarious! I listened to it on audio and it was so fun. I even sent a copy to my best friend in Illinois!

I just started The Archivist A Novel. Seems good so far.

message 8944: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I started The Kite Runner. So far so good.

Elizabeth, thank you for the Lise See recommendation. I didn't realize she had written other books prior to Peony in Love and Secret Fan. I read Secret Fan and loved it. I've added the one you mentioned to my TBR.

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments While I was home sick with a bad cold, I finished "The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death" by Charlie Huston. I really enjoyed it, but would recommend it only to those who can handle a bit of violence, gore and quite a bit of profanity in their novels, as long as the plot and characters are good. Personally I have loved all of Huston's books.

I'm now in the middle of Bones of Betrayal by Jefferson Bass. I've really enjoyed these "Body Farm" novels.

message 8950: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I started a little bit early for the Spring Challenge with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but I doubt that I will be even close to half-way done by March 1. The writing is so dense, and there are so many footnotes!

That being said, I am really enjoying it so far. It's got this tongue-in-cheek humor running through it which makes me happy. Its almost like its making fun of itself for daring to be a period piece.

But I'm only 115 pages in, so I'll have to wait and see where the remaining 900 or so pages take me! :)
