Linda | 887 comments Just finished Girl With A Pearl Earring and am not certain why I even gave it a try. Rarely do I dislike a book this much, but it goes to the top of my worst reads in a long time.

There is a series on TV? Gotta get cable again someday. I love the books. I'm glad you enjoyed your first. And, it must have made for an interesting training.

Couldn't have said it better myself (about Girl with the Pearl Earring].

As for me, I finished Love in the Time of Cholera, which I really enjoyed despite my fears to the contrary. I'm almost through with Watchmen, which I am enjoying again, but I plan to be careful with who I recommended it to. And, I'm halfway through Anna Karenina.

I'm thinking about the second Sookie Stackhouse due the recommendations here. But, I also need to start an interesting nonfiction book, The Invention of Air, for another group.

message 8455: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I started The Lightning Thief today. So far its okay, I needed something fun though.

message 8456: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I am reading Love is A Mixtape, by Rob Sheffield.. I like it so far.

Melody | 564 comments Susanna - I also have just started The Time Traveler's Wife and I am finding it a bit confusing. Hopefully everything will become clear soon.

message 8458: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I just finished Mistress of the Art of Death...and I'm about to start Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas, just for a light read before starting ICTC on Valentines.

message 8459: by Katie (new)

Katie I'm having a really hard time finishing The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I'm not sure why. I find the story interesting and I like the main character. For some reason I'm having a hard time with it.

So in light of that I actually started to re-read Sense and Sensibility tonight. :) I just watched the 2008 mini-series and I hadn't read the novel in forever. It's definitely gotten me in a better mood about reading.

Wow! I read this book well before the hype, really loved it and have read all her others. The book was much better than the film, although I enjoyed that too.

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Finally finished The Audacity of Hope while being snowed in up in the mountains over the weekend. And I'm about halfway through The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and really liking it so far. Would have gotten much more reading done due to being snowed in, but was helping to entertain two small kids (my niece and nephew) with cabin fever all weekend! :)

Other than the constant worry and whining, I didn't really get anything from it. Everytime I thought there was a possibility of something happening, I was disappointed. Guess, you have to have some ho hums to appreciate the yah hoowies.

message 8470: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just finished The Gargoyle. I did not love it until the final chapter. This is the first time, for me, that a book has lived up to the hype.
I've since moved on to Little Earthquakes for something quick...to make up for the lost time from The Gargoyle (because it took me a whole three days to read it).

I listened to "The Devil in the White City" on audio and enjoyed it very much. I liked learning about the first ferris wheel etc. but of course, the serial killer was the focal point for me. I found another NF book about just the serial killer (can't remember the title just now) but it really didn't add any more than what we learned in White City.

Paula | 1098 comments Jackie, I started "The Lightning Thief" while working in a elementary school one day. I read a couple of chapters and it was interesting so I'm hoping to get back to it soon. I'll be working 2 weeks at another elementary school starting Friday, so maybe I can get back to it.

I of course have the image of the actors now but it is okay because they did very well. And I am almsot finsiehd with the book and love it.

Jeane, Some books you love, some you like, some you struggle with and some you put down. I guess this is just one I struggled with and for no particular reason than it just seemed to want to be more and never really fulfilled that promise. I have been fortunate to discover many great reads through this group, some even grabbing me from the first page. But by the last page of Girl With A Pearl Earring my only feeling was "oh well" guess that one's over with.

To those who loved this book, please this is simply my view, not a criticism of anyone's taste.

I understand it can happen that it makes you feel like that. When I enjoyed a lot a book I always feel a pitty when it doesn't give the same feeling to someone else. Hopefully you sson read again books that blow you away Linda! :-) What books did you love?

I'm curious what you'll think of this one Susanna, as I was considering pushing it up on my TBR after Outlander. I used to think I'd never want to read a time travel book, but O changed my mind.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I finished The Time Traveler's Wife this afternoon.

It is indeed an interesting book. Not your standard sort of time travel, either.

I ended up giving it three stars - it was certainly not a waste of my reading time.

message 8491: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I just finished Loyalty's Web by Joyce DiPastena and it was a bit "meh" to me. It was okay, but not great. I'm not terribly disappointed considering it was a First Reads win and I didn't pay for it, but still I expected a bit more from it.

Now comes the task of finding my next book to read. It's seems a bit harrowing now considering it's about two in the morning here. Hopefully whatever I pick will be engaging considering Loyalty's Web was not.

message 8492: by Lynai (new)

Lynai I'm midway through Coelho's The Alchemist now. Hope to finish it tonight. So far so good. But I expected more, though. And it wasn't that thrilling coz I already "sneaked" and read the last chapter. Bad, I know. ;)

I found hte Alchemist an "over-rated read (for me at least). I've been in many book club discussions on this book (a favorite of many book clubs) and all in all I found much "lacking". But I do think that alot depends on the "age" you are when you read this book - younger people tend to like it more - older dinosaurs (like me) - not so much.

Lori Walker Lynai, Have you read The Witch of Portobello, also by the same author? If you've read it, what was your opinion? I just ordered it from Amazon. My ex read it and really liked it, but then he felt that its profundity wore off with time. I still want to give it a chance.

message 8495: by C.J. (new)

C.J. (cjwest) Thought I'd stop lurking and say hi.

I'm reading Harlan Coben, The Innocent. My reads tend to be various thriller and mystery writers since I am a writer myself. I'm really enjoying Coben's voice. I'm just underway but I'm intrigued by the characters.

The Shadow of the Wind was the most liked book read at our book group last year. I enjoyed it, but I had a bit of a problem that the author needed to include a 100 page letter to make the plot work out. It seemed a bit hokey to me. Otherwise I thought the prose and the story were wonderful.
