My first rebus book (Ian Rankin) but just great. I loved the series on tv and the books are just as great. "
There is a series on TV? Gotta get cable again someday. I love the books. I'm glad you enjoyed your first. And, it must have made for an interesting training.

really? i was going to get that book. but now i think ill hold off!

Couldn't have said it better myself (about Girl with the Pearl Earring].
As for me, I finished Love in the Time of Cholera, which I really enjoyed despite my fears to the contrary. I'm almost through with Watchmen, which I am enjoying again, but I plan to be careful with who I recommended it to. And, I'm halfway through Anna Karenina.
I'm thinking about the second Sookie Stackhouse due the recommendations here. But, I also need to start an interesting nonfiction book, The Invention of Air, for another group.

So in light of that I actually started to re-read Sense and Sensibility tonight. :) I just watched the 2008 mini-series and I hadn't read the novel in forever. It's definitely gotten me in a better mood about reading.

Wow! I read this book well before the hype, really loved it and have read all her others. The book was much better than the film, although I enjoyed that too.

Lollie, I read Lisey's Story and really thought King was back in that ..."
Wow - good to hear - I need to look into Lisey's Story

I am finished reading "Prophet of Yonwood" not reading anything right now!

Other than the constant worry and whining, I didn't really get anything from it. Everytime I thought there was a possibility of something happening, I was disappointed. Guess, you have to have some ho hums to appreciate the yah hoowies.

Linda - So true and well said! :)

I've since moved on to Little Earthquakes for something quick...to make up for the lost time from The Gargoyle (because it took me a whole three days to read it).

I'm about half-way through The Devil in the White City. It is starting to pick up a bit but there is so much detail, and I tend not to enjoy a lot of details about mundane things.
I listened to "The Devil in the White City" on audio and enjoyed it very much. I liked learning about the first ferris wheel etc. but of course, the serial killer was the focal point for me. I found another NF book about just the serial killer (can't remember the title just now) but it really didn't add any more than what we learned in White City.

Linda, why? I thought it was a very strong story and one of the few I would reread.

The training became for sure very funny in my head! Oh yes there is a serie, don't know if they are showing it now but last year I watched it every week on tv in Belgium. I of course have the image of the actors now but it is okay because they did very well. And I am almsot finsiehd with the book and love it.

The Loop by Nicholas Evans. I'm hoping this will be a quick read so I can get..."
Like all of his books I got completely absorbed by it but with this one I only stopped reading once for a quick bathroom break and then read till I finished it. So it was a one day book for me.

I never heard of it before, but it looks like it could be a very enjoyable read. I remember The Loop as going pretty quickly.

Jeane, Some books you love, some you like, some you struggle with and some you put down. I guess this is just one I struggled with and for no particular reason than it just seemed to want to be more and never really fulfilled that promise. I have been fortunate to discover many great reads through this group, some even grabbing me from the first page. But by the last page of Girl With A Pearl Earring my only feeling was "oh well" guess that one's over with.
To those who loved this book, please this is simply my view, not a criticism of anyone's taste.

you read The loop????!!!!!!! What did you think about it/ Read any of his other books?

I understand it can happen that it makes you feel like that. When I enjoyed a lot a book I always feel a pitty when it doesn't give the same feeling to someone else. Hopefully you sson read again books that blow you away Linda! :-) What books did you love?

Glad you'll be reading Messenger Allison! Hope you love it....

I'm curious what you'll think of this one Susanna, as I was considering pushing it up on my TBR after Outlander. I used to think I'd never want to read a time travel book, but O changed my mind.

It is indeed an interesting book. Not your standard sort of time travel, either.
I ended up giving it three stars - it was certainly not a waste of my reading time.

Now comes the task of finding my next book to read. It's seems a bit harrowing now considering it's about two in the morning here. Hopefully whatever I pick will be engaging considering Loyalty's Web was not.

I found hte Alchemist an "over-rated read (for me at least). I've been in many book club discussions on this book (a favorite of many book clubs) and all in all I found much "lacking". But I do think that alot depends on the "age" you are when you read this book - younger people tend to like it more - older dinosaurs (like me) - not so much.

I'm reading Harlan Coben, The Innocent. My reads tend to be various thriller and mystery writers since I am a writer myself. I'm really enjoying Coben's voice. I'm just underway but I'm intrigued by the characters.

Jeane, I loved The Shadow of the Wind, The Art of Racing in the Rain, North River by Pete Hamill, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

The Shadow of the Wind was the most liked book read at our book group last year. I enjoyed it, but I had a bit of a problem that the author needed to include a 100 page letter to make the plot work out. It seemed a bit hokey to me. Otherwise I thought the prose and the story were wonderful.
