Marc Lax (mlax) | 2 comments Dahl would be great. He's also written some short stories I remember reading in school, though they were more adult oriented. Kinda creepy.

Alright, here is the link for Dahl in Goodreads

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

What book would you like to read? There is always James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or we could try an idea that one of the members discussed in another thread about making a month about that author and everyone can read what book strikes them at the time, and discuss them in general. Any ideas?

message 53: by ☯Emily (new)

☯Emily Ginder I think we should pick a month and have everyone read a book of their choice by Dahl.

message 54: by Emma (new)

Emma (hghpfan) | 2 comments Wes should read charley and the chocolate factory

message 55: by Katherine (new)

Katherine I am just joining this group...love the idea. My kids are grown but I currently work in a children's bookstore so children's literature is always on my radar. I LOVE that you are looking at classics and not just the hottest new books! KUDOS to all of you.
I have to put a plug in for the series My Father's Dragon! Perfect first chapter book for boys or girls. Written in the 1940's but full of good, clean adventure! Also surprised that no one suggested any E. B. White or maybe I missed it. Trumpet of the Swan is his unsung masterpiece :)

message 56: by SheriC (new)

SheriC (shericpm) E.B. White sounds good, too. Charlotte's Web is the only one of his that I've read.

How about Shel Silverstein? Or are the 1970's too contemporary?

It is a perfect job! Not only does my friend own the store but I make my own hours :) I used to teach first grade and pre-school so I love seeing the kids. The hard part is finding time to stay current with the new literature, refresh myself with the classics but also find time to read "grown up" books.

Alright, let's do March as Dahl month. It will be a read any book and then I will start a thread in the children's read folder. This should be fun!

message 60: by Jess (new)

Jess (jess_huh) | 2 comments has anyone suggested "a wrinkle in time" or "the giver" yet? both those are wonderful classics

message 61: by Sorento62 (new)

Sorento62 | 71 comments Hi, Jess-
It looks like the group read A Wrinkle in Time in 2012. It has been decades since I read that and I can't remember it very well so may re-read it at some point.

I want to read The Giver, so it would be great if this group were to read it this year.

How about starting a nomination list now for the next few months?

Sharon Purvis | 4 comments Jess wrote: "has anyone suggested "a wrinkle in time" or "the giver" yet? both those are wonderful classics"

I've read A Wrinkle in Time (and the others in that series), but although The Giver is on my shelf, I haven't read it. It's come up in several contexts lately, though, so I think I need to.

message 64: by Christina (new)

Christina T. I know this is a "classic" group... but I really can't help but ask if anyone has read Abarat by Clive Barker? It's a really great YA read...

Katie (kaytayjay) | 4 comments Lisa wrote: "How about starting a nomination list now for the next few months?"

I like this idea!

message 66: by Blueberry (new)

Blueberry (blueberry1) I love the Giver. It is a series of four now. I like the second one the best.

Yes Christina! I love Abarat! It's one of my favorite series. The artwork is just amazing!

It's just too bad that it takes a while for the next book in the series to come out. Although, I always tend to take my time reading through a series anyway, so it doesn't bother me as much as it might bother others.

Looks like The Giver it is for April! This book always seems to generate such interesting discussions! Can't wait!

I had never heard of it but must have found it in my recommendations on Goodreads. Take a look at the reviews.

Nora (noramarie) | 7 comments What is the book in which a very big boy befriends a small boy with a disability? It was very good.

I don't think it was The BFG. I read that for Roald Dahl month. It is about a giant and a little girl, and she does not have a disability. -Julie

Heidi it is!

message 87: by Dawnita (new)

Dawnita Fogleman (dawnita_fogleman) | 13 comments I don't think I've ever read Heidi. I need to see if I have it around here somewhere. :-)

message 88: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Since I've recently read this to my grandchildren, I'm going to have a treat and be read to myself! I'm going to download a dramatisation of Heidi to my iPad through Librivox.

I've nearly finished reading Five Children and It to my grands. They are loving it. One of the younger ones went and buried his sister's furry soft toy in the sandpit. Sadly it rained a little overnight so there were tears, tantrums and a fair bit of cleaning up!

message 89: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne Oh that is so cute (about burying the toy)! I love that they are enjoying the story so much!

message 90: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Have to admit it's not just the kids who are enjoying it. So is the reader (me)!

message 91: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne That is the best kind of read-aloud - when the reader AND the readees love it!
