Feel like introducing yourself, then please go right ahead :)

I'll start:

I'm Ala. No, it's not a short form of another name. And no, I'm not female. And no, you can't have my beer.

I tend to read Sci-Fi and Fantasy mostly, but will occasionally read other genres as well. Don't really have a favorite author(s), but a few I enjoy are:
Butcher, Simon R. Green, Rothfuss, Abercrombie, GRRM.

So...who the hell are you?

whimsicalmeerkat I'm Denae. I read a little bit of just about everything. My favorites tend towards post-British colonial literature and fantasy/sci-fi, the former for reasons which are way too convoluted to explain. I hate trying to list favorite authors because I always feel like I miss someone important, so feel free to just stalk my profile.

Off the interwebs, in addition to reading, I knit, play video games, in particular WoW, stress, have an ongoing podcast/NPR addiction, love music, and enjoy cooking and baking for other people. In 10 days I will be officially unemployed. I'm in the process of moving, which makes me a grumpy bitch.

I do not enjoy long walks on the beach. Spiders are fucking wrong. My middle name, for reasons that remain inexplicable, is Markieta.

Sara (inkandpavement) | 19 comments I'm Sara. I love science books, mostly physics, but it's pretty broad. I have only recently been getting into sci-fi, maybe the last few years or so, and am happier for it. Anything else, really, I like it all.

I also like cooking! Cool....there's that. I like to play video games, haven't quite gotten the hang of pc games since *gulp* Shadowbane (haha). I've got twin babies that I hang out with. They'll be the first people on Mars. Well, I hope. They're still pretty young.

Yadda yadda yadda. Nice to sort of meet ya'll.

Oh yea, I say ya'll....sorry.

message 4: by Fergus (new)

Fergus (insectoverlord) I'm Fergus,17, just about to finish school and hopefully go to uni to study Englit. I know reddit has a tendency to mock the humanities, but it also wanks over Ender's Game and Foo Fighters, so I don't know if I trust its opinion :D

From around 10 I started on 'the path' that I'm still on now: I discovered Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' and attempted to read 'Dracula'. This started a hopeless love affair with both music and reading which continues to this day. I have books to thank/blame for the odd, thoughftul(and modest) person I am. Sometimes I'm spiritual (attempted to be a Buddhist, embarrassing interest in the occult thanks to 'The Holy Mountain' film), sometimes I go for the surreal and weird, sometimes the silly, sometimes the depressing, sometimes the lighthearted. Mostly I go for the interesting.

I love comedians, the music of Gong and falling asleep to podcasts. And this is making me seem more self involved than I actually am.

whimsicalmeerkat I think that's the natural reaction to The Holy Mountain. I mean, what else is it supposed to do? Well, other than be a vehicle for Jodorowsky's children.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Hiyas Sara and Fergus.

Did you two find this group because of Reddit, or the other way around?

I'd say hi to Denae, but I don't want to.

whimsicalmeerkat Sara, I love that you also say "ya'll" instead of "y'all." I have a running argument about that with a friend. I insist I am right, but he's been published, so I may be delusional.

Hi, Fergus.

Hi, Ala.

Sara (inkandpavement) | 19 comments Hello, everyone.
Denae, thanks. I guess there is no way to be right when doing something wrong. I've always seen it spelled ya'll but I don't know if it's correct.
And Ala, I did find this group because of Reddit. I joined the books subreddit and saw a post about goodreads. Love it. Absolutely love it.
Also, Fergus, you are awesome.

message 9: by Geoff (new)

Geoff (gmunny33) | 9 comments I'm Geoff, and I also came here because of Reddit, where I troll people in r/books telling them what to read. I read as expansively as I can, but my tastes tend toward 19th century British (George Eliot, Jane Austen, Dickens, the Bronte sisters) and contemporary American fiction (Roth, McCarthy, DeLillo, Ozick). I like detective novels and sci-fi/fantasy as well. I grew up on video games and television, so reading is a fairly recent phenomenon for me, but I've come to love it. My wife and I work at a school right in the heart of the Navajo Nation. I work part-time, which gives me some time to read - but it's never as much as I'd like.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyas Geoff :)

There's never enough time to read.

message 11: by Antoinette (new)

Antoinette M. (antoinettem) | 4 comments My name is Jenn, although I tend to opt for rodent themed monikers. Feel free to refer to me as YP. I'll read just about anything. Among my favorite novels are Executioner's Song by Mailer, Difficult Loves by Calvino, and Song of Solomon by Morrison. Obscene novels, and novels that feature Victorian Englishmen dying of their own stupidity are favorites. I like authors who are more impressionistic as well, like Kobe Abe and Cormac McCarthy. I also like reading YA romantic paranormal now and then, because I like candy.

message 12: by Justin (new)

Justin (trister0) | 3 comments I'm Justin. Wandered over here when I saw a mention of this group on r/books. I'll read just about anything that I can get my hands on. I even made a run at reading the Twilight books, just to see what all the fuss was about. That was an unsuccessful venture.

A couple of my favorite books are Geek Love and A Confederacy of Dunces. I like characters who hard to like as people, so Ignatius J. Reilly was right up my alley. Even named a dog after him.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome YP and Justin.

Yersinia wrote: "Obscene novels, and novels that feature Victorian Englishmen dying of their own stupidity are favorites."

This, I could go for.

Justin wrote: "I even made a run at reading the Twilight books, just to see what all the fuss was about."

This I would never try. You're a better man than I, Justin.

message 14: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I'm with Ala on both of those.

I have a piece of paper full of novels that feature Victorian Englishmen dying, generated by an off hand comment I made about why I enjoyed Heart of Darkness. My notes read: The Siege of Krishnapur, The Terror, Exterminates all the Brutes, Charles Webster, Flashman, and Scott Shackleton. Charles and Scott may just be men who died in the Arctic/Antarctic.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I have The Terror sitting on my shelf, started but never finished. Need to get back to it at some point.

Never read the others. Worthwhile? Or only if you just want to see englishmen dying?

You know, I've not gotten around to reading them yet. Currently I'm reading The Splendid Century, which is full of fun little vignettes about the doctor's college getting their asses whooped by the barber's college, the infamous Parisian mud, and people pissing behind doors at the Louvre. While it doesn't feature any dead Englishmen, it does juxtapose European arrogance and savagery nicely. In the end, what I love about the Victorian Englishmen is they managed to somehow look down their noses at the natives while dying of disease or the elements.

message 18: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) Steve here, /r/Toronto

Not much to say.. love reading, board games, bicycling, vegetarian cooking. I can't say I have many favourite genres or authors, but definitely have some favourite books, most recently All the Pretty Horses has won my heart. I'd say science fiction is my fast food of books, can't help but dig through a hundred page scifi treat :)

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyas Steve :)

I have that on my TBR list... I'll probably get to it by 2013...

message 20: by Cori (new)

Cori Hello! Corinne here! I love reading, hiking, and board games.

My favorite types of books are historical fiction and non-fiction, often with some mysteries and a bit of everything else.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Corinne :)

Get here from Reddit or just randomly at GR?

message 22: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Welcome, Corinne!

message 23: by Cori (new)

Cori I've been in the group since last summer I think but thought I'd pop in when I saw the intro thread. I think I looked to see if there was a reddit group at the time, though I stalk r/books as well

message 24: by Negatroyd (new)

Negatroyd | 2 comments Hello! After a loooong hiatus from reading, I've finally managed to renew my love of books and rekindle my reading habits. My queue is huge, but I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thought I'd say hi!

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Hiyas Negatroyd :)

What genres do you normally read?

message 26: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Welcome, Negatroyd!

message 27: by Negatroyd (new)

Negatroyd | 2 comments I mostly read fiction - I'm a big fan of scifi and fantasy, although I've been looking to expand.

message 28: by Lara (new)

Lara Johnson (larajohnson) | 16 comments Hi all. I sort of jumped into the "This Perfect Day" discussion without introducing myself, so I thought I'd come back and do that.

I'm a New Englander (Connecticut, to be exact), married and mom to three kids (14, 10, 3).

I'm a freelance writer and, as of yet, unpublished author. I read everything--fantasy, scifi, horror, chicklit, teen novels, you name it. Non-fiction too, mainly about writing and finances lately.

I am, at any given moment, reading at least three books (usually one non-fiction), but have been known to juggle six or seven too. More if you include ones I'm reading with my kids.

I found this group through Reddit, and I am enjoying the discussion group. I'm looking forward to the next book, which is being shipped to me as I type this. I hope.

Lara

whimsicalmeerkat Welcome, Lara!

Welcome Lara :)

message 31: by Cori (new)

Cori Welcome Lara! I tend to juggle a few books at a time as well, and since they are posted up on goodreads it makes me feel silly! But it works, right? :-)

Good luck on your future writing endeavors!

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I saw the thread on r/books the other day, I know there's a bunch of you who recently joined up.

Stop lurking

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyas Adis :)

Who are your favorite SciFi authors?

message 34: by Camilo (new)

Camilo (cpayan) Camilo from Miami, checking in.

Right now I'm looking forward to reading the books from /r/bookclub, the brothers karamazov and the pale king. Are you all still actively reading Tigana? If I can track down a mobi, I'll be all over it.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyas Camilo :)

The reads we do here aren't really all that structured. Get to it when you can, no rush.

message 36: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) Ala wrote: "Heyas Camilo :)

I picked the book and am just starting it :(
blame the library system for suddenly having 8 books I requested ages ago.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Heh, no worries Steve.

I'll still discuss it with ya.

message 38: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Me too! I finished it on Monday.

message 39: by Vis (new)

Vis (v2blast) | 1 comments I found Goodreads before I saw it mentioned on Reddit (Felicia Day mentioned it :P), but I didn't know there was a Reddit group until a month or so ago.

I haven't read anything in a while, other than Mockingjay (the third Hunger Games book; I read the previous two about a year ago), which was sort of disappointing... College has kept me busy. I did buy the Hunger Games boxset as well as the A Song of Ice and Fire boxset (the first four books) after I saw a few episodes of the HBO series. I'm taking summer classes, though, so not much time to read those yet either. (For that matter, I have like 4 Xbox 360 games I haven't even started yet (I don't have the 360 with me) and a few more I haven't finished.)

Life is keeping me busy. I haven't read too much nonfiction besides Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything and slightly more recently Free: The Future of a Radical Price (though still not very recently). As for fiction, I mostly love Tolkien; Harry Potter was not that amazing, though I liked the seventh book. And I loved the first two Hunger Games books.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Vis :)

Hope you find some time to read eventually, or at the most get some sleep since you sound busy as hell.

message 41: by Jodie (new)

Jodie | 3 comments Hi! I'm Jodie. I'm a grad student in New York City. I'm currently in Argentina though. I love reading. I will read almost anything. Once I start a book, I pretty much don't do anything besides read. It's pretty awesome, although it gets time consuming. I just started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Nice to meet you all!

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Jodie.

What do in Argentina?

message 43: by Jodie (new)

message 46: by Sarah (last edited Jul 11, 2011 09:09PM) (new)

Sarah (saruhlewis) My name is: Sarah. I guess I would be considered "genre bipolar". Fantasy is my all time favorite, and I am trying to break into SciFi with every fiber of my being. Just can't find the "one". On occasion I have been known to bust out a historical fiction.

I used to read constantly, but I recently spawned with the hubs and DD doesn't take well to mama with the book.

I found this group whilst perusing Reddit, wanting to put my two cents in- but knowing how ferocious Redditors can be.

I love talking about books, and I'm ecstatic that I've found this site today AND this group!

message 47: by Jack (new)

Jack (attackofjack) Hey guys, I'm Jack. I just found this the other day through reddit, and I'm still looking for books I have read on here, hence the ridiculously low number.

I really like SciFi and have as of late been getting back in the swing of reading things. I'm looking forward to more reading in the months to come, assuming I have time after school starts again. :)

message 48: by Tekka (new)

Tekka I guess I should say something, so here's this sentence.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll allow it.

message 50: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) Ha, Tekka.. welcome Jodie/Sarah/Jack!
