So, I think without hearing it, it can be pronounced either way.
lol! You'll have to wait on Jane's ruling for that...I only asked because the three i'm considering were actually all published in one volume together as a print run...so I felt it worked more like an anthologyKarenH wrote: "Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "ok, here's another one....

I'm not sure if any one has asked this question yet but with alternate name spellings should we put the alternate spelling in brackets after the original name on the list just to clarify so there is no confussion incase someone should call in to question the name your using. I hope this makes sence :)
D.G. ~Frisky She-Devil~ wrote: "Jane - One suggestion. :)As I've seen that some questions seem to come up several times, would you consider posting a list with FAQs? That way people can refer to them as they sign up. :)

Good idea DG - I had incorporated a few of the answers into the rules at the beginning, but I'll do a FAC (using actual questions/answers) - probably sometime in the next 24 hours. ...I have a 5 hour drive today :)

I think that is a good idea. (I have it that way on my excel spreadsheet at the moment.)
I think the Zack/Zachary has been answered, but just to make sure:If it is made clear at some point that their full name is Zachary but they are generally referred to as Zack, then Zachary can be ticked off.
Rachel wrote: "After I read the question about the pronunciation of the names (Carolyn vs. Caroline), I am now wondering if one of my names qualifies or not? This means it doesn't qualify to exchange for Madeline. Sorry :(

Up to 500 pages: check off 4 names
500 - 750 pages: check off 5 names
750 + pages: check off 6 names
Page numbering to be based off the mass market paperback edition where possible :)

I'll get those FAQ's up soon...
Mojca wrote: "I don't know if someone already asked this, but...What about middle names? For example - the hero in Nalini Singh's Play of Passion is Andrew Liam.

No middle names. Has to be their first name, or, if they go by their second name - that name.
I suppose I just confused everyone: BUT - my name is actually Katherine Jane but I am known as Jane. Therefore IF I was a character in a book, the name viable for check off would be JANE, not Katherine.
Another (fictious) example: Lord Percy Alan Landon Summerville, Earl of Bookvale. He is known as Landon or Landy throughout the book. You could check off Landon.

Hmmm - I need to think on this. I was going with the Anthology ruling... I'll be back shortly - need a coffee to ponder my logic!
1.5 hours later - sorry, I still haven't pondered - I'm running around like a headless chook trying to leave home to get to a party 5 hours away. I'll get back to you hopefully in 5 or 6 hours :)
You're right, Jane. I'm sorry to repeat questions. I do remember seeing the McNab ruling. Thanks, for all your hard work.
Tina "reading mommy" wrote: "You're right, Jane. I'm sorry to repeat questions. I do remember seeing the McNab ruling. Thanks, for all your hard work."No probs Tina :)
Jane (PS) wrote: "Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "can we use a female pet for aubury?? cause I know of one...lol! (the cat in the Georgina Kincaid series is Aubrey)"LOL! I think the question was tongue-in-cheek, but the answer is 'no' anyway :) "
What if the animal talks and interacts with the characters? I'm reading Long Hot Summoning right now and there are two cats (Austin and Sam) that are basically familiars for the keepers. They probably have about as many lines of dialog as the people.
KarenH wrote: "So does this mean that the two Denise A Agnew books listed earlier - the ones with the hot covers ;) - could be used and a total of four names selected from the two books combined? Or would it be necessary for them to have actually been published together in a single volume? They are part of the same series."Good question Karen, I had only planned to use them for two names (Sean and Jake). And I did read them all in one day, one after the other (have I mentioned how dangerous immediate internet access to books is for me). :)
I'm kind of assuming that they would all have to have been published in the one book though for it to count for this challenge. I've checked goodreads and unfortunately - no luck.
But... just because they're so preeeetty I'll put them up here again ;p
*sigh*
I have to say, i'm actually really surprised about some names that aren't on the list that I would except - Mary, Patrick...very classical type names
Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "I have to say, i'm actually really surprised about some names that aren't on the list that I would except - Mary, Patrick...very classical type names"Yes, but then it would be (too) easy. ;)
not saying its not easy...but they are names that you would think would be on a popular names list...ya know?
Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "not saying its not easy...but they are names that you would think would be on a popular names list...ya know?"I assumed the list was randomly generated from a list of english-based names - so that anything could turn up...
Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "not saying its not easy...but they are names that you would think would be on a popular names list...ya know?"
You're kidding me! That list is from a POPULAR list? I've never even heard of the name Nevaeh!

Sorry Diane - I really am going to have to hold the line on it being people, not animals - despite their having a huge intelligence and fictional personality... :)

Sorry Mojca - I didn't answer this. Yes - despite it being Eva in another country/culture, the name has to be Eve to qualify for ticking off...
KarenH wrote: "So does this mean that the two Denise A Agnew books listed earlier - the ones with the hot covers ;) - could be used and a total of four names selected from the two books combined? They are part of the same series."RULING: I'm going to allow this BUT you have to read a minumum of 3 novellas in that author's series with a maximum of 4 names allowed for check off for the total series read... The total of the (minimum 3) novellas MUST exceed 150 pages. (Logically, they should hit around 300 pages...)
Basically I figure that anthologies generally have at least 3 novellas in the book - and that each novella is around 100 pages...
So Karen - you need to pick up another of those pretty books to qualify to use the Denise Agnew books for the tournament. ;)
Jane (PS) wrote: "KarenH wrote: "So does this mean that the two Denise A Agnew books listed earlier - the ones with the hot covers ;) - could be used and a total of four names selected from the two books combined? Jane I've added the ruling message number next to the marked off names for easy reference.
Yz's first post said popular names...I have seen the name neveah though - its heaven spelt backwards

What if the main character of the book is an animal?
Yeah well ... I was actually thinking more like Lassie, or a book only about animals like Watership Down ... though none of those names specifically are on the list. But I read quite a few books that are about dogs and cats, who are the main character ... seems like they should count, IF they happen to be a name on the list.

I'll get to the FAQ late tomorrow I think - I have a family reunion most of tomorrow...

Guess we'll have to wait for Yz to clarify how she generated these names. I have to admit - there are a few on here that I haven't even heard of!

Wow - I feel OLD!
I never had heard of Nevaeh either until someone on the radio here where I lived said it's "Heaven" spelled backwards.
Jane (PS) wrote: "Sorry Diane - I really am going to have to hold the line on it being people, not animals - despite their having a huge intelligence and fictional personality... :) "NP. Thanks for the ruling.

if anyone doesn't mind erotic romance with some M/M and a menage, tymber dalton has a series that features a Neveah call the Love Slave for Two series - I love it!
Jane, may I use Isabel for Isabelle? Both names sound the same to me, but I'd rather ask now than be sorry later. :)

Just to answer the question where did the list of names came from.
This is a list of the top 100 baby names for the year 2010.
We will have another challenge next year for 2011. We will see which names remain on the list.

Thanks Tina :) So you would pronounce those names (Madelyn/Madeline) the same then too? I did when I was reading the book but now I'm questioning myself on if I read the name entirely wrong! lol Either way it's cool... just don't want to feel like I'm cheating here! I take my challenges very seriously :)
