I'm just about even on the names. Only 2 less female names than males. Although I've had a few male names more than once. It seems like every book I read has a Sam in it. The only Sam I ever knew in real life was our dog when I was a kid.

I just started a book and the woman's name is Acadia. I have never heard that name before. It's not even a paranormal.

I KNOW! And I'm trying to do this with just my normal reading (i.e. no hunting out books just for a name). It's going okay so far, but I predict issues when I get towards the end.

And don't get me started on the number of characters who are one letter out. Alexia, Elle, Eve, Jade, Marie, Ripley...

LOLOLOL, Tania! I'm doing the same...I'm not hunting books for the challenge either but but I'm bumping books with lot of names up my TBR and would consider reading books that sound interesting if I know they have a name I need. Otherwise, I will NOT read a book just for the names. :)

If anyone is into YA, I'm reading Shiver with my daughter. So far there's: Isabelle, John, Jack, Sam/Samuel, Grace/Gracie, Olivia and William.

"Gracie" is only mentioned once but I used it since her father refers to her effectionately as "Gracie". William is also mentioned once as the 1st name of a cop who is in the story again but just referred to as Officer so and so.

Ashlyn is a really pretty name. Aislinn - they're going to spend their lives having their name mispronounced. Trust me - I've spent my life being called Tanya instead of Tania.

I confess I too don't know the pronunciation difference between Tania and Tanya.

And this is why this game is so much fun. One letter makes all the difference. Not that I'm suggesting Jane go to this much detail with the names on our list or we'll never get finished.

The difference is so slight normally only those who have a family member or friend with the name would know the difference.

And even then it's normally if only if you know the origins of the names that you understand the difference:

Tanya is Russian and is short form of Tatiana (comes from a Roman family name - Tatius and is also linked to a third century saint/matyr)

Tania is English is short version of Titania (Shakespeare's - Midsummer Night's Dream fairy queen). Original origins of Titania are greek I believe (coming from Ovid) and linked to the Titans meaning giant.

Even most baby name sites get it wrong and link them both together so you sites saying the name is Russian and means fairy queen. I just happen to have a grandmother who was very clear about the differences.

I'm still not sure I know what you mean. I get the second one (that's how it's pronounced in Spanish) but I'm not sure how the first one sounds different.

I'll have to ask my husband. He probably knows.

In Spanish the vowels have pretty much ONE pronunciation so the really subtle differences of English pronunciation still elude me.

So I found a female Regan in a book I'm reading. According to one of the sites Jane posted in the front, it's another spelling of Reagan and can be pronounced either of 3 ways!

Some names, the one letter doesn't alter it like Mackayla/Makayla. Others it changes it totally: Ava/Eva or Eva/Eve.

But then you get people (in real life) who change the pronunciation themselves: I knew a "Tamra" or that's how I thought she spelled it: tam-ra. But she spelled it Tamara, which to me is prounounced Ta-mare-a. And I've known a lot of Tamara's over the years and she was the only one to pronounce it Tam-ra.

So I'm actually reading a book over 500 pages (not my norm) and it's really low on the names. It's probably the only book I'll get in where I can get an extra name and it appears it won't even give me 4. 1 of the names it gave me, I already had in another book. And another of the names-the character has pulled a disappearing act and I may not be able to use it afterall.

I know what you mean. I used to work with a woman named Rachel ( spelled like that) but she pronounced it Rayshell. She had to keep correcting people as to the right pronunciation and sometimes she would get mad when people pronounced it the usual way. I thought it was very tiresome. How are people supposed to know that your name has a special pronunciation? People say may name all sorts of ways and it doesn't bother me as long as it's close enough. :)

That's why I don't get mad about my name in real life - only people who know the difference are going to understand the difference in pronunciation and that's not many :)

I do get a little upset when my own family misspell it though :)

To plead my case: my Meme's name was Evelyn. She pronounced it Ev-i-lyn not Eve-lyn. And I take Evylin as Ev-i-lyn as well.

Hi Mary. How do the two web links pages in the FAQs pronounce it? To be fair, we really need to stick to their guidelines, remembering I disallowed madelyn/madeline despite local variations... I don.t have access to more than mobile internet, so checking out these websites are beyond me for a few days.

Well one website doesn't have Evylin at all. The other says it's pronounced eh-vi-lyn. Which is how my grandmother and everyone in our family pronounced her name Evelyn. The other website has several ways to pronounce Evelyn-one which looks like eh-vi-lyn.

To me it's not the same as Madelyn/Madeline or Carolyn/Caroline. The "e" on the end of Madeline changes how the "i" is pronounced. If it was Madelin then it could be the same a Madelyn. The e on the end changes the "I" from "ih" to "I". Like it would if you spelled it Eveline or Evelyne.

And another Sean in Crunch Time by Diane Mott Davidson which also has a Julian. Julian is a regular character and they don't have to be read in order.
