What was your first Stephen King book?
Pet Sematary. That picture, on the dust jacket of my local library's hardcover edition, of Church the cat and his mesmerizing green eyes, the shadow of Louis in the background carrying Gage off into sunset called to my 12-year old psyche. I had to know what it all meant. And after turning to page one, I couldn't put it down and my life was changed forever.
The Shining - in 2005 I was taking a writing course, trying to write an autobiography and the teacher said, "parts of this would make a great horror novel." I had never even READ a horror novel at that time. Still, I tried writing horror and failed miserably, so the teacher's next comment was, "buy three books by stephen king, read them, then do everything that he does even if you have to copy him word for word." I dared to read The Shining, and then just kept on reading. In 2009 I ran out of King's novels. Fortunately he keep on writing them.
Night Shift, many years ago. I taken it from library and after a long break, now I'm trying to recover with other books.

I would always make sure it was not facing some way I could see it. But, some masochistic part of me would sneak looks at it from time to time just to scare myself a little. Finally I read that exact copy about 15 years later and I read the whole thing straight through!

My first was the Apt Pupil. After that, I was just hooked and the next thing I knew; I was already reading another one of Stephen King's!

But, you can't, for the life of you, remember where you left your car keys!
The Dreamcatcher. My mom got it for me because she thought I'd like it, which I did... at first, but dropped it halfway through (mainly because HP: the order of the phoenix had just come out and I was dying to read it). Some time later I picked up again and wanted to slap the past me in the face. I loved it and couldn't understand why I didn't like it much at first. Since then I've been an avid Constant Reader.
The Stand like a month ago. I've read The Gunslingerand am currently reading It. I've been an avid reader for years and am just discovering King. Where have I been?
The Shining. Bought in Brussels in 1977. All the cover has rubbed off & pap pages are loose but still one of my favourite books ever.
Pet Sematary. It was the first book I'd read that was intended for an "adult audience", and I was not disappointed. Still one of my all time Kingian favorites.
Bag of Bones. I tried reading The Eyes of the Dragon back when I was a wee lad but got caught by my mom and didn't get to finish it.
The first I read was The Bachman Books set when I was about 11 or 12. it wasn't until later that I found out that it was Stephen King.
Needful Things. My friend lent it to me as a teenager and I decided to stay up late every night and read it with a flashlight. Horrifying.
My first Stephen King book was Pet Semetary. I was in 7th grade when I read it and did a book report on it. I got an -A- but Mrs. Smith, the teacher never looked at me quite the same.
my 1st 2 were the dead zone and salem's lot not sure which came 1st but I'm reading salem's lot again and barely slept cos I was dreaming about the dead kid!
Found 'The Stand' in my middle school library. They had a fair amount too. I know for a fact the first time I read 'It' it was an old beat up MS library book :-)
I think the first book by King that I actually remember reading was Misery because I plowed through it in 2 days. My favorite has to be The Shining. Clichè, I know and currently reading Dr. Sleep. How's that for love?!
My first Stephen King book was The Girl who Loved Tom Gordan. I loved this book. My grandmother gave it to me so it is very special.
Carrie. I remember hearing how scary Stephen Kings books are as a child. When I picked up Carrie and Firestarter I had apprehension. I soon discovered that they weren't scary as much as they were beautiful and captivating. I have been working my way through all of Stephen Kings works since. :) (Bag of Bones, The Stand, Duma Key and IT were pretty scary though, and easily my favorites)
I read Firestarter when I was 15. I was really obsessed with the book and then jumped right into reading IT. IT is still my favourite out of all the Stephen King books I've read so far.
My first SK was It. After that, everything was easy. It was my favorite book for a long time...until I started the dark tower series. Just a few years later my mom joined us in the SK book club. Stayed in that and received a new SK every 6 weeks or so until we had them all. Read every one!
I bought a copy of NIGHT SHIFT when I was 11 or 12. Read a few of the stories and was sufficiently frightened--particularly by THE BOOGEYMAN. I tried IT when it hit paperback, but I was 12 and found the size of the thing to be daunting. Picked up THE DARK HALF when I was 15: hooked.

I still remember the last line in OFTR 30 years later! I think Firestarter was the first novel of his I read. Night Shift was what made me fall in love with scary stories. I've been a King fan ever since.
Night Shift was given to me by a substitute teacher in high school after I got caught in the class passing around what ppl now call "poppers" ... I was a reader before that but after reading Night Shift ( the story Night Surf was my favorite ) I became a book addict ...

The appearance of the Space Cowboy is, for me, one of the most startling things King has ever written, and the "de-gloving" scene made me nauseous. (And that ain't easy!)

Hahahahaha. Mine was The dark half, too and I was 12! After that Langoliers, Talisman, Pet Sematary... and before the first book I watched IT, Misery and the old version of Salem's lot! :D
