Review article by Michael from Sci-fi/Fantasy Book Club (group):
http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2011/04/1...

I've been dying of anticipation for this series for a while, but the above article has me even more excited for the premiere this Sunday.

HBO aired a 15 minutes teaser, but I chose not to watch it. Only because the wait would be even worse.

I'm sure there's going to be a lot to talk about in the weeks to come.

One question I have to start off is: Have you read the book?
I'm looking forward to comparing the book to the series.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments He is a fantatic actor, I can't wait either.
4 more days! I can hardly believe it's finally here! Almost.

Marti (martimacg) | 1 comments I saw the 15-minute teaser and loved it! I finished reading the book 2 days ago and am ordering the next one in the trilogy! I think the series looks so much like what I envisioned while reading the book. Fantastic! Can't wait to see this one!!!!

message 5: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments I read AGOT last December, and am currently reading A Clash of Kings. Love it.

A.C | 27 comments I hope they will show it here in the Netherlands, love the books

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments WINTER IS COMING.... in about 10 minutes.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Anyone watch the premiere tonight?

Perfection of vision. They did a fantastic job with everything: casting, sets, costumes, landscapes. For a first episode I thought they did really well with setting the stage for what's to come.
Even the intro was awesome.

message 9: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments If anyone's watching, we got a fantastic discussion going on over at Scifi/Fantasy BC:

message 10: by Christine (new)

Christine I watched it and it was awesome!!!! I agree, Jackie, they did everything to perfection. That intro was so cool. I want to watch it again and again!

message 11: by Jackie (last edited Apr 19, 2011 07:53AM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments I watched the episode again, I couldn't help myself. I can't wait for the next one. This is The TV Event of The Year. It's amazing.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll watch the first ep again tonight. I thought it was fantastic, and I haven't even read the books.

message 13: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments What did you think about what happened in the end to Bran? Pretty shocking.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I hope Bran survived but it doesn't look good. If only he'd listened.

message 15: by Ειρήνη (new)

Ειρήνη Just watched the first episode! I haven't read the series, so it's even easier for me to just LOVE this new fantasy TV series!

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Is the show using tame wolves, or are those huskies?

message 17: by Jackie (last edited Apr 24, 2011 11:19PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments The pups are Siberian Huskies http://www.westeros.org/GoT/News/Entr...

I think they'll use Alaskan Malamutes later, or they should. Malamutes are almost always used in television and movies when wolves are required. Huskies aren't as big or smart as Malamutes. Malamutes are the closest thing to a wolf in looks and temperament and can be trained. Or maybe they'd have to CGI them like the monstrous-sized mother of the pups. I'm looking forward to finding out.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Didn't you just love when Tyrion slapped the hell out of Joffrey? I did. I can't stand that arrogant little shit.
And insipid Sansa should have told the truth. As much as I hated seeing Lady be killed, Sansa deserved it. I know, I'm a bitch, so what?

Not much else happened, this ep seemed kind of slow.

message 19: by Ed (new)

Ed | 57 comments Love the series

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Me too.
It's already been renewed for a second season.

I agree with your post Jackie. I can't decide if Tyrion is good or bad, but I'm glad he slapped the crap out of the spoiled Prince. And Sansa is just making me mad.
The only thing I really disliked was when Lady Stark was crappy to Jon Snow.

* Is it just me or is the Prince odd looking? Like his eyes are too far apart and other things. He reminds me a lot of the actor that played in Stephen King's Children of The Corn1984 version I keep seeing him coming out of the corn rows saying "He wants you too Malachai"

message 22: by Jackie (last edited May 02, 2011 07:36PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Kellyflower,
YES! He is weird looking. I don't know what Stupid Sansa sees in him, cus it surely ain't his looks.

I hate the way everybody treats Jon Snow. Catelyn is jealous, but still, after all these years she holds a grudge against a kid. But even the other kids. I know they like, and even love Jon, but they still call him bastard in a derogatory manner. I don't like it.

My three fav characters are Dany, Jon and Tyrion: the abused, the neglected and the despised.

I think Tyrion is good. And if he's not wholly good, he's still a lot better than any other Lannister.

message 23: by Ed (new)

Ed | 57 comments I am enjoying reading the book along with watching the series. This us definitely more like the sopranos than LOTR.

message 24: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Joffrey's such a sissy, practically crying when Cersei put medication on the wolf bite.

Tyrion pissing off The Wall. Priceless.

message 25: by Ειρήνη (new)

Ειρήνη Jackie wrote: "Tyrion pissing off The Wall. Priceless."

Priceless indeed! *laughing*

Also priceless: the Dothraki's words to Viserys "A..a..a! You- walk!"

message 26: by Jackie (last edited May 03, 2011 08:57AM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments In the book, wasn't it Dany who told Viserys to walk? That would have been a better scene, it demonstrates Dany finally coming into her own power and not being his little victim anymore.

The choice of actor for Varys was very different than what I pictured in my head (skinny, effeminate guy), but I still liked the choice and felt it worked.

And where the hell is Ghost? When Jon split off from Ned and went with Benjen to the Wall, I didn't see Ghost, nor have I seen him since. I know he sleeps in Jon's room. I'm a bit annoyed with no visuals on the direwolves. They're such a big part of the story.

message 27: by Angie (new)

Angie Sorry about the duplicate post. I thought I had started the topic on this show. Oops

message 28: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments You did start a topic a while ago, I didn't see it. But this one has more posts.

Anyway, how are you liking GOT?

message 29: by Ειρήνη (new)

Ειρήνη I can't believe its the end of the season already!

message 30: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Just the finale left.
They've done a great job with a few exceptions.

message 31: by Ειρήνη (new)

Ειρήνη The directing and the acting is superb!

I just wanted to see some epic battles in the last episode...

message 32: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Writing, acting and directing are fantastic. I really couldn't have hope for better.

A few things I'm slightly disappointed with:
the lack of battle scenes, the lack of direwolves, not demonstrating Jaime's fighting skills, and not mentioning Sansa's part in betraying Ned's plans for leaving to Cersei. This was a huge scene for me because it cemented my ill feelings for Sansa and it shows what a self-absorbed silly little twit she really is. Sansa was changed in too many ways for me to be completely comfortable with.

All in all, HBO did a fantastic job with such an epic series. It's hard to please everyone and harder still to put everything in.
I'll be waiting in breathless anticipation for the next season.

message 33: by Ειρήνη (new)

Ειρήνη Jackie wrote: "I'll be waiting in breathless anticipation for the next season. "

I think it's really important that George R.R. Martin himself is one of the writers of the episodes. That can only be good for the show.

message 34: by Jackie (last edited Jun 15, 2011 04:29PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments I'm sure that's the only reason the show follows the book rather closely. While I may bitch about changes, I do understand why they've been made; and in the context of the TV series, they work.

message 35: by Myra (new)

Myra | 406 comments Well, what did you think of the finale? I loved the dragons. Can't wait until the new season. What's so hard is knowing what's going to/supposed to happen before it does. I kind of wish I had been as shocked with Ned's demise as newbies seemed to be. I kept thinking, "if you think that's bad, just wait!"

message 36: by Jackie (last edited Jun 23, 2011 07:10PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments I loved it. I think they did a fantastic job with the whole series. There were so many great scenes in this one episode.
I was worried it'd feel rushed, but it didn't: Cat, Jaime and the rock. Sansa and King Asshole. The Greatjon's speech was fantastic but I wanted to smash Theon's ugly face in when he swore his sword to Robb. Tywin acknowledging Tyrion. Sam, Pyp and Grenn reciting the NW vows. The Night Watch riding out beyond the Wall. All of Dany's scenes. Television doesn't get better than this. I can't convey just how pleased I am with this adaptation.

My laugh out loud moment was:
The Lord Commander of the Night Watch to Jon Snow: You going to bring him back from the dead, are ya? No? Good. We had enough of that sort of thing.
Priceless.

Even knowing it was coming, Ned's death was still an emotional blow to me. It had to be devastating to the newbies. I know quite a few people who completely freaked out.

Though, it still amazes me how many non-readers who only watched the show whined about Ned's death on youtube, insisting that HBO could have changed it. Look, I adored Ned, but without his death, none of the rest would have happened. What, he'd go to the Wall, have a warm and fuzzy reunion with Jon? Then what? The end of the story, that's what.

Oh, it sure does get worse. I've read the first 3 books and in each of them, I had one scene each where I had put the book down because I was so upset, I needed a breather. That's never happened to me before. Ever. High impact, for sure.

This series turns fantasy on it's head. We're so conditioned with fantasy that good always wins and the evil get what they deserve, not so here. Shit happens indiscriminately. Thinking back, I should have known, when Bran remained crippled, it didn't bode well for the rest of characters. I mean, in every fantasy I ever read, Bran would surely have had a miraculous cure. GRRM set the stage of things to come with that one.

What I love most about this series is, no one is safe, and I have no idea what'll happen next, because anything can happen. Anything. I can't even begin to guess.

Well, Myra, we've got a long wait ahead of us til the next season. I've already watched each episode 3 times and I'm sure I'll be having my own personal marathons. This series is not leaving my DVR until I can buy the DVD.

How far have you read in the series? I plan on buddy-reading AFFC next week, getting ready for ADWD next month. WooHoo. Finally, it's here! Well, almost. My copy is ordered so it's as good as here, lol

message 37: by Myra (new)

Myra | 406 comments I've read through what's currently available, and have pre-ordered ADWD. Just wait until you finish AFFC. You're going to be so anxious for the release of ADWD you won't be able to stand it! I'm at the point that the whole thing is running together and I have a hard time trying to remember in which book something happened. At any rate, enjoy your buddy read. I'll look forward to hearing what you have to say when you've finished!

message 38: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments That's exactly why we planned it at this strategic time. I prefer to read a series start to finish, back to back. When HBO announced the series, I had to read it before it premiered.
I have the same thing happen to me, all the books of a series bleed into one. So far, I've found ASOI&F to be the best fantasy of all time.
