I agree. His inspiration for the characters of his books are his family. A walk to remember i think was inspired by his sister who died due to sickeness (Same what happened to Jamie).

Aya Abou Amer yes i agree with you ,,it's like a must to break your heart at the end of each book :((
about this book i liked the movie more ,, the book was a little bit boring at parts but definitively it was more heart breaking

you need to go to nicholassparks.com to see the background of every book. you see that a walk to remember is indeed inspired by his sister. but at the time he was writing this book his sister was still alive so he couldn't kill the character jamie because that would mean he kills his sister. but he knew how sick she was so he couldn't close up the book like she still lived so that's why the book ended the way it did. i really love reading this things at his site.

message 204: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna yes either someone or something like an animal dies its so sad

message 205: by Carla (new) - rated it 5 stars

Carla Varca Yes yes yes! :D

message 206: by Lauren (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lauren Yes, I also noticed that Nicholas Sparks writes books that are melodramatic and heavy on the heart. I don't remember anyone dying in Dear John, but maybe I am wrong - its been a while since I read it. Above all, A Walk to Remember, and The Notebook are the biggest death-infused books that leave you in tears by the end. The Last Song is a good contender for a tear-jerker too!

siriusedward nice book.though i hate tragedies.and yeah his books are tragedies..but when in the mood i read it(rarely, very rarely though)..theres something about his books ..you know...

Avinash i guess so...the same thing happens in "The notebook"

message 209: by Bailey (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bailey to me, the way he puts the ending she doesn't die in the book.

Jools Lauren wrote: "Yes, I also noticed that Nicholas Sparks writes books that are melodramatic and heavy on the heart. I don't remember anyone dying in Dear John, but maybe I am wrong - its been a while since I read ..."

In Dear John, John's father dies and Tim dies but again I think that was left open at end.

message 211: by Bailey (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bailey I think we are noticing a pattern of him leaving deaths uncertain.

message 212: by Karyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Karyn All his books are very good. One must cry when reading one of Nicholas' books.(make sure you have a box of tissue). The main characters must die or taste death bt some point .I like the Notebook the most. Nicholas is an amaizing author.

message 213: by Emily (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emily Wilt Someone always dies in one of his books.
I have read ALOT of his books.
And I haven't ever read one that someone doesn't die.

William Read 3 weeks with my Brother, and you'll see his real life is just as dramatic! That's where he get's the catalyst to write these novels!

message 215: by Alida (new) - rated it 4 stars

Alida Arabelle i guess its true......but really emotional books

message 216: by Chloe (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chloe Thomas I totally agree. Although I find a lot of authors have something that follows through all of his/her books.

William He's still exceptional!

Feliks Shannon wrote: "Is it just me or does someone always die in Nicholas' books? "

Well, the author himself is brain-dead to begin with.

message 219: by Mila (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mila Fitos Yes. And after like the half of the book you know who it's going to be, because someone dies in every book of his, but that's just a reason I love his books. And I agree that the film was better too, but the book is great too.

message 220: by Flávia (new)

Flávia Marques There's always someone dying, (mostly because of cancer), there's always a divorced character, there's always a character related to the army, and in the movies there's always an ending with someone looking at a lake or at the sea. Oh, and there's always letters (someone writing to someone...). The saddest thing here is that mr. Sparks claims to be "a surprising author, because all my books are very different between each other" (he really said that on a tv interview). It's very sad to live on ignorance.

Tsion Fikadu Demisse always

Vanessa Eden Patton That is why I stopped reading his books...once you have read one, you've read them all.

message 223: by Star (new) - rated it 4 stars

Star Forbis I've liked all his books I've read! Message in a Bottle is a favorite & I think Safe Heaven is his best! Any Book that makes me laugh or cry is a good one in my book! The Longest Ride is a little different though.

message 224: by Patti (last edited Apr 15, 2014 03:54PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Patti Take care when reading Sparks. You never know what may happen; it's not always a happen ending. I have read all of his books from The Notebook through The Guardian, and several of those have sad endings. Also, if you haven't read it yet, he and his brother, Micah, wrote a great non-fiction book about their trip around the world, interspersed with vignettes about their eccentric upbringing. I really loved it. A Walk to Remember and The Rescue are my favorite Sparks novels. The Notebook is based on his grandparents' romance.

Pranjal Jain Yes... Every NS book leaves the reader with tears...

message 226: by Trixie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Trixie Joy Yeah, and it gets a little bit depressing because a story either begins or end with someone who died.

message 227: by [deleted user] (new)

YES someone always dies or comes close to

Aakansha I couldn't agree more. When I first read Nicholas Sparks and slowly progressed in reading his books, I had this gradual realization after finishing every book, "Why does someone die every time?" But I'll have to confess and accept that even though his novels have a vivid portrayal of death, I read his books every time.
I can't come in terms with the idea of denying myself with the pleasure of reading a beautiful description of love in it's myriad forms, describing it in the incredulous and impeccable way only a Nicholas Sparks novel can.

message 229: by Mawada (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mawada Ibrahim Lol. Really it's true, but somehow you just love it!

message 230: by Parva (new) - rated it 4 stars

Parva Chhantyal I must have read almost every book of Nicholas sparks but I don't remember happy ending in any of them :D

Saving People, Hunting Things~ The Family Business I have read a few of his books, and I think The Choice got one of the happy endings. As I was reading it, I was expecting it to end badly.

message 232: by Atul (new) - rated it 5 stars

Atul Mittal Yeah I guess. In some of his books, someone dies in the end, but not in all of them.

message 233: by [deleted user] (new)

lol yep someone always die.
His books are very sad, but good.

message 234: by Ali (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ali Harper Lol I think Nicholas Sparks needs a hug. And if he ever wants to make himself fee; better about killing off all his characters, he just needs to meet George R R Martin and he'll instantly feel better in comparison.

Florencia Maybe his books wouldn't be his without a death.

message 236: by Nadine (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nadine Sutton I don't like all his books, but I like Dear John and Walk to remember a lot. Its sad when characters die but it is more true to life....

message 237: by Nadine (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nadine Sutton Soad wrote: "his books are really great more realistic then others"
I agree. I think that his novels aren't Happy Ever after, because that rarely happens In life. And he accepts that love has to make sacrifices... I enjoy writing a happy ending, myself but also I like to write something where things don't work out exactly as you hope they will

Shubhita Garg Nicholas Sparks makes it a point to kill someone or the other in his books. I guess he tries to appeal to human sentiments or something. Its so depressing and kind of makes his books very predictable.

message 239: by Nadine (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nadine Sutton Well it does happen in Real life. People die, relationships don't always work out. People leave..

message 240: by Anna (new) - added it

Anna Sobczak Yes, Its like.....Happy! Happy! Happy! DEATH!!

Allison Smith okay yes, but that happens man, LIFE happens and it can end in a second. although someone always dies, it's not always someone from the main couple. I've read most of his books (13 out of 18 but I'm still working on it) and if I remember correctly, no one dies in The Choice COMING TO THEATERS IN THE SUMMER AND I'M SO PUMPED OHMYGOD.

message 242: by Nadine (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nadine Sutton I agree, I think that while I love romances with a happy ending, its nice to have love stories that don't end in perfect love. It makes people who don't have a perfect life or marriage, feel a bit better

Shruthi It not just you, in all the books I have read of his at least one person dies. Excpet 'the choice' I don't think anyone dies in that book. (Reply to shannon's comment: "That is very true, every day that goes by in our lives someone out their is suffering and just thinking about it makes me want to cry.")

Priyanshi Gupta No ! Not always (The notebook and its sequel)but yes most of the times its some one dying in his novel...

Tsion Fikadu Demisse Maybe he has an explanation. But I felt the same. He makes it look like love is painful.

Tsion Fikadu Demisse Maybe he has an explanation. But I felt the same. He makes it look like love is painful.

Priyanshi Gupta No he don't try to imply readers that love is painful, according to me he just try to imply that no matter what!, Love stands above all tragedies that can happen to one of the lover or both; and what can be a greater tragedy than dying of dear ones!!
Also if he don't bring tragedies or obstacle in his love stories then what would be the parameter to prove the truthness and power of love that two people share.
But ya i would agree that spark should think of other obstacles then dying or diseased of one of the two partners!
