Is it just me or does someone always die in Nicholas' books?

Shannon What really frustrates me about his books is that in like, every book that he's written, he kills off a character.

When you read the first couple/ few you're like, that's so sad but as you read more of them you start to get annoyed at how many people are killed.

I sort of wish that there was more variety in his books.

Btw, I'm not saying that I hate his books. I am a huge fan of his books but that's just the one thing that annoys/ frustrates me.

I think the only movie that was "good" , in my opinion, was A Walk To Remember or The Last Song

message 158: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin I prefer the book to any movie think books are just better

melody yess..i figured it out after reading some of his books.
they all ended in tragedy...
and they all seem to have same story line where one of the charecter gets sick or die...
i got bored and stopped reading them...
he is a great writer.i wish he write some thing differently for once.i really liked his books once..its just my opinion

Cassondra What I like about Nicholas Sparks is that you never know if his characters are going to live happily ever after or not. In some books, they do, in others they don't. In others, something happens in the sequel that is sad. I'd give examples, but that'd be spoilers. I'll say something spoilerish below the marked spoiler line, so beware.

I will also say that there IS such a thing as happily ever after, and so I like that the author does portray this in some of his books, again no names to be mentioned.

SPOILER FOR A WALK TO REMEMBER:
It never actually says Jamie dies at the end of the book, only the movie. While it is implied that this was her diagnosis, it was left open to miraculous healing. I think I read somewhere that this was because the author's sister was going through similar trials at the time.
END SPOILER!

Shelly Itkin Sandra I agree as his stories are so real and touching and unfortunately someone does die but his writing is great

Joann(san diego shutterbug) Ruth wrote: "Patricialogan8 wrote: "His sister died of cancer"

Whose sister?
and in what book??"

Nicholas sparks' sister died of brain cancer. He actually wrote a walk to remember about her and well for here.

message 163: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin I did not know his sister died of cancer

message 165: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin that is sad but a wonderful tribute to his sister

message 166: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue I love this discussion title, yeah it does seem like death is a major player in his books. That's why I can't read them back to back, always a good and memoriable read. But angst like that can't be doubled down.

message 167: by Julie (new) - rated it 4 stars

Julie So annoying. I read his latest book, "The Best of Me". After a certain point I could totally predict what was going to happen, which whas a HUGE disappointment.

message 168: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin so would you not recommend the book as I have not read it yet

message 169: by Julie (new) - rated it 4 stars

Julie Don't get me wrong, I did like the story, it was just very predictable after a point. I will alway read any of Nicholas Sparks new books because I love his writing style, so it's totally up to you whether or not you read the book. Don't let my annoyance with being able to predict the ending sway you.

Shelly Itkin am reading the richard paul evans book in the walk series and might try the nicholas one after that but will no what to expect

message 171: by Sarah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah Gabrielle wrote: "Me too. I agree someone always dies in his books! Or comes close to it."

That's because his books are based on his family and their lives. Every book has been written about someone he knows.

message 172: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin I did not know that

message 184: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin No I have not what is a book you recommend

message 185: by Sue (last edited Jun 22, 2012 06:40PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue I'd like to turn this around a bit. Think about all your favorite books, the ones you can't forget. "Something" most likely died in reading it, maybe a relationship, a person, a trust or a sense of being. These are the stories you remember. But, I don't doubt how much it impacted you when "something" died. And lets face it these are the stories you remember long after you've read hundreds of books later. So Yes Nicholas Sparks overuses this 'vehicle' I'd like to see him writing something closer to Fried Green Tomatoes... a deep abiding friendship and love. This was a true bond of love forged in pain. He can touch emotions I just wish he'd go in another direction.

message 186: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin Seems like this direction works for him and his fans enjoy it
One of my favorite books is Kane and Abel and nobody dies in that

message 187: by Melissa (last edited Jul 02, 2012 03:03PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Melissa My favorite Nicholas Sparks books has to be The Last One & The Last Song.

It is the Lucky One not The Last One. edited 7/2 Sorry

message 188: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin I think mine is The Notebook

message 189: by Ruthie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ruthie Melissa wrote: "My favorite Nicholas Sparks books has to be The Last One & The Last Song."

I Love the last song too!

Melissa Ruth- did you see the movie for the Last Song? It was really good, but sad. I went to see the movie for the Lucky One, too. Sorry, I typed the wrong title up above.

message 191: by Maygin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maygin I have never read one of his books and NOT cried. I love it though., He always manages to pull at my heart strings. I even cry when I predict what will happen and it comes true.

message 192: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin guess that is what keeps us coming back it just gets to us

Yeah I saw both of those in theaters...I cried in the Last song but not the Lucky one...

Hahaha yeah me too :) :(

message 195: by Helen (new) - rated it 3 stars

Helen Stevens Nicholas is nothing if not predictable. He has his themes that he sticks to book after book. That said - he does it very well, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!

Danielle At least one of the characters normally passes away by the end of the book- normally in an unexpected death or tragedy. Regardless, I always found his books to be realistically romantic. Maybe we all don't have that one guy to write us 365 letters a year; but in life, it's quite common to fall out of love or to become sick.

message 197: by Shelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shelly Itkin I agree you can usually guess the ending but I still enjoy and look forward to his books. They are great reads.

message 198: by Faith (new) - rated it 5 stars

Faith Flores Yeah I really don't like that a lot of his books have has the very best charactersdie I mean I best of me the male lead character had to die but I didn't want to finish it cuz it was so worng and sad

message 199: by Imke (new) - rated it 5 stars

Imke read his biography and you understand this a lot better. he had to deal with a lot of death and i think writing these books is a way of dealing with it. also he's known for his tragedy telling love stories so if you don't like that then don't read it. it are beautiful stories but if you begin to feel like it's all predictable then you probably shouldn't read his books. i don't say i think his stories are predictable but if you feel like that going into the book then you will not like that book.

Theresa Liza wrote: "Someone usually dies or has a close call with death. AND the two main characters always cook dinner together at some point. :)"

I don't know why but I always love those scenes when the characters cook dinner together.
