Sometimes it's hard to match fully with someone if you read across multiple genres. Even having one genre difference will throw off the whole balance. I read several genres in both YA and adult, but have friends who mainly read historical, or mainly read realistic, or mainly read pnr, or mainly read adult, or mainly read YA, etc. Just the fact that I try to balance my material between YA and adult makes me incompatible with most of my friends, since I have friends who read mostly or all YA, and some friends who wouldn't touch a YA if you put money inside of it.I have a friend who has almost the same taste as me in sci-fi, fantasy, uf, etc. but she loves a lot of realistic fiction (which I will read, but only if it comes highly recommended) and I love historicals (which she doesn't like at all), so we don't have as high of a compatibility, even though we name a lot of the same books as our favorites.
Catie wrote: "Wendy, I think that we can agree a lot on the kind of romance that we like (although I know you like the bad boys, LOL)."There are a few exceptions to that rule, (Jamie, Etienne, Griggs...), but yep, generally I like them dangerous and possessive, like Jericho Barrons, YUM.

You've got alot more then me on your list.

Some of my favorites:Harry Potter series
Hunger Games series
Wolves of Mercy Falls series
Anna and the French Kiss
The Secret Life of Bees
Nightshade
Jellicoe Road (anything by Marlina Marchetta)
Anne of Green Gables
I did a quick check and I'm at 86% with Heidi I (still haven't added my March books) and since Catie is her book twin I compared books as well. We're at 77%. I should probably go back and read the first page!

Heidi I wrote: "Brittany I hate to break it to you but we are 86% similar :)"OH NO!!! Say it ain't so!! How is that possible? I don't read cosy mysteries at all. When I'm not reading YA I tend to delve into the classics. Ex: East of Eden is up next in my TBR pile.
Although, I DO take a lot of your recommendations. Hmmm...
Catie I looked at our compatibility and we're 79% HOWEVER the ones were most different on are things that I rated from memory from high school and college years. So I think we're more similar than our shelves show.

It's not so much how we rate books, but that we say each other's thoughts a lot of the time and tend..."Oh... that's an excellent idea about comparing genres. Even if we are only 83% compatable I'm happy to share a book brain with you anyday!
P.S. I remember being really happy after you finished Oliver Twist because even though I haven't read it yet, Dickens is one of my favorite authors of all time. overly wordy? Absolutely... but I still love him. Great Expectations is one of my favorite reads ever in the history of ever!
I think they calculate based on books that we have in common and how we rated them.Of course it's not like they actually EXPLAIN their math anywhere (not that I would understand it anyways...)
Catie wrote: "Hey Jessica, I think you might be my twin. Seriously."Yay! If we are book twins, I should probably go read something by the two authors you mentioned in your post. I've almost bought The Yiddish Policemen's Union a bunch of times, but still haven't read anything by Michael Chabon. And I've never even heard of Tara French.
Wendy: Yay for another potenital book twin. I'll have to check out your favorites for suggestions.
I do wonder if I'm rating so high with people because I've only recently started using my account, so I still have a ton of things to add. What I have is what I've read this year, my to read list, and a lot of my favorites. I do think it give a good view of me.
Because I am curious I have added some of your "must read" authors to my TBR list. One of the books I think I almost bought once actually. Don't remember why I didn't but I've definitely read the synopsis before.
Bluemoon - maybe you'll discover your book twin through the recommendation game, if we ever do it. And I do think we're all bonded through our YA love.Catie - I don't think there was ever a reason (beyond the cover and interesting title) that I was attracted to Yiddish Policemen, so maybe I'll start with the one you posted.
Any thing by Tana French you would suggest starting with?
As long as their aren't weak female characters or teens who entirely forget about a murder plot to make googly eyes or over romanticized paranormal creatures then it's got a good shot for me!(These are not all of the things I find obnoxious in books, just a few on the top of my head)
Catie - Wow that looks really interesting, but also completely outside my normal zone. But recently when I've gone outside my comfort zone, it has really worked. Yay for book recs!
Catie - I actually read The Mayor of Casterbridge in high school and have loved it since. But I haven't read any other Thomas Hardy (though I own a ton) what do you suggest I read first?
Hahahaha! Heidi, we're at a higher similarity rating than Brittany and I are. In fact, you're the highest of all my friends at 88%!

Becca wrote: "Hahahaha! Heidi, we're at a higher similarity rating than Brittany and I are. In fact, you're the highest of all my friends at 88%!"bwhahaha! And everything thinks I am picky! Look at all the people I am matching up with :)
I always thought I was pretty critical of books which can equal out to be picky. I just hate bad writing or stupid subject matter/characters, so I can be pretty harsh at times. I think the only reason we're not closer is that I rarely ever read cozy mysteries. I don't think I have any listed on here.
Cozies are fun "in between" books. They are light and fluffy. I have always liked mysteries for some reason (Agatha Christie is my favorite) even when I was young I read the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Actually I think Harriet the Spy started the whole thing to be honest!
I adored Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys when I was a kid. I owned tons of Nancy books and constantly borrowed her and the Bobsy Twins from my grandmother. I really should get back into cozies and broaden my horizons again. I remember you recommended a bunch on another thread, but I don't remember which thread, do you?
I really should probably re-rate and judge old books.I'm also a very excitable person at times. I really think my mood (and if there is caffeine in my system) can really effect reviews.

I know I'm going to have the damndest time finding my book twin, since I tend to be a bit of a lit snob (LOL), but here goes:SEEKING: Fan of true urban fantasy along the lines of Charles DeLint, Guy Gabriel Kay, Emma Bull, Neil Gaiman and Holly Black. Also must love the edgy, the dark, the unexpected and the not-always popular. If a fan of vampires, they must not sparkle, dazzle or have silly spellings of their names. They must also be serious predators who don't always mind leaving a little carnage behind. With high fantasy, quests and magic swords are okay, but prefer non-traditional settings and characters such as Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series or Anne Bishop's Black Jewels saga.
In regards to YA, again, must love the edgy and the literate. Just because one is writing for teens is no excuse to dumb it down. Romance or romantic triangles are not necessary.
Oh and passionate about Jamie Fraser is a MUST!
Heidi (the original) wrote: "I only give 5 stars to books after I sit on it for a day or two. I am stingy with my 5 star books."Me too! It's rare for me to give 5 stars, and even 4 stars. I wish they had half stars so bad because I think I give 3.5 a lot! I've become more stingy since being on this site though haha
