Jenn (bookishevents) OMG this blog thing is such a freaking nightmare I don't understand how all you guys can do it regularly. I set one up because I kept getting asked about my blog, you know the one I didn't have because I don't like blogging. So finally today I decided to set one up again because at least then I can answer the question - "What's your blog" So I've officially spent all day working on it, I have a headache, I'm frustrated because I can do html but not CSS code and while I have a book on it I don't like to read nonfiction. I can't use any of the download this for free templates because every time I upload them it shows up all different on the blog I created than the one that's the demo version and I don't know how to fix it. It's awful one kept moving the profile links to where the nav bar is and wouldn't let me switch them back, another put the subtitle above the title and again can't move it. Some of them when you upload them it tells you it's missing tags but won't show you where. I can't figure out how to edit widget links to make them open in a new window, on the extra pages I don't know how to make individual posts and instead have to edit the whole page so I'm guessing if I ever update it it then becomes a massively long page. I have to keep editing the html whenever I put in a photo or a link. And I've spent all day and haven't even got half my reviews on the thing yet. Plus I still don't like how it looks and you can't even really read the text on it so it's pretty pointless. How can you guys do this on a daily basis?

message 64: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments @Jenn-So sorry you are having such issues!!! I wish I could help you but I am afraid I haven't set up my blog yet so I don't know how to do it...
Maybe one of our seasoned bloggers can help you out.
Maybe if you take a step back for a while then come back to it you will feel better. I can imagine how frustrated you must feel after working on it all day.

And that is why I leave the blogging to the pros - I wouldn't have the time or the patience to do it.

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Hi KC!

message 69: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) I'm using blogger, but I completely hate all their default themes so I went on a search for free ones to upload but they all keep showing up wrong, so now I'm randomly changing things to see what it does to the page in hopes of fixing it. I managed to get navigation back on the one I uploaded and it's a lot prettier and more readable than the ones that are free. Now I'm trying to figure out how to make the post box wider.

message 70: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Ah; mine's wordpress but I had a site using Joomla and when I enabled SEO it completely messed up the template! Sounds like you're more html-savvy than I though.

message 71: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) Nah, I just have a copy of original open in a word doc so if it messes up I can see where and what to put back. I've got it mostly figured out now, I just need to make the main body wider and the subtitle go underneath the title instead of at the top of the page.

message 72: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) So don't judge this on content because all I've managed to get up there are the worst reviews I've written, but I had to do so much fiddling with CSS which I don't actually know how to write and changing image size and moving those to new hosts that I'm just wondering how this looks. It's not done yet because well content is important and all, but if someone could tell me how bad it looks from an outside perspective I'd appreciate it. http://frequentreaderinfrequentblogge...

I think your blog looks really great!! You are too hard on yourself. :) I would be thrilled if my blog came out this well-especially on my first try!
good job!

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) | 34 comments It looks great Jenn!! I agree with Cambria... you're way too hard on yourself!

message 75: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) It took 7 hours of messing with a coding language I didn't know to make it look like that. You should have seen what it looked like when I first uploaded the template which was supposed to look perfect upon uploading. Not so much. But I'm glad it looks good now, yesterday I was so frustrated I wanted to punch my computer, fortunately I restrained myself from doing so, I appreciate you guys taking the time to look at it. Thanks so much.

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments Okay guys....I am trying to finally set up my blog. It is not going well for me. :( I am not good with computers but gheesh! I started with blogger, and couldn't get it to work right so I went over to wordpress which i like a little better b/c i am familar with the dashboard....but....i see all these templates online that I like...how do you download a template into wordpress? i think i will be able to manage the blog once i get it up but its the getting up right that I am having issues with.
Oh and also...how do you delete a blog? I don't want the one on blogger but I don't know how to take it down either.....lol. this is why I should just stick to writing. :)

message 78: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Cambria, if you go the the dashboard and click down onto "Appearances" and you should end up at "Manage Themes" - any good?

That's the directions from the blogger website.

Hey JA!
I went there and then hit custom background and tried to upload this template that i found on a free template site (it said it was for wordpress) and it tried to upload and said can't upload for security reasons....ugh. I found the perfect template that I have been looking for and thought i would never find....and now i can't figure out how to download it on there....I tried to upload a different one to see if it would upload and it wouldn't either. any ideas on how to get it on there?
I really apreciate your advice....

Thank you Jenn! I appreciate the directions. that is really sweet of you. :)

message 82: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments so the template I want isn't a html file. It is a zipdrive. I think that is why it isn't uploading....any advice?

message 83: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Aha! Assuming you mean zipped file, it's one that's been condensed so it isn't so big to download. To use it you need to unzip it first! Are you Mac or windows? If windows, right-click on the file and it should give you the option to unzip it and resave the full file as another name. Then try uploading again and it should work bettter.

When you unzip the file, it will ask a variety of questions (I don't recall what, off hand, but unless it looks a bit seriously drastic, I usually go along with the default answers.)

Any good?
JAC

message 84: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments I'm afriad the template I like just isn't uploading. I even called my cousin who is a graphoc designer and he couldn't get it on there. :( I haven't given up (yet) I am just looking around for other designs.
Thank you so much for trying to help. I really appreciate it. I am so bad with computers...
I do have a simple question (hopefully) when I go to put my reviews in on wordpress for the blog...is that a seperate page with a link?

message 85: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) Does anyone else use Blogger and know why the followers box is suddenly empty and the follow button is missing?

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) | 34 comments Jenn wrote: "Does anyone else use Blogger and know why the followers box is suddenly empty and the follow button is missing?"

It's been that way all week Jenn.

message 87: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) It didn't do it on mine until an hour ago and I've been searching all over the place for how to fix it because even though I was hesitant to blog in the first place I started looking to some of the cool things you can do and a lot of them want you to have 100 followers to do it but I can't get any followers without a follow button :(

message 88: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments When you put your reviews on, fo to Add new post and it generates a new page. The newest page is always at the top when you go to your blog's address so if you reviewed the bible yesterday and War and Peace today, going to your URL (ie www.cambria.wordpress.com or whatever it is) will take you to a page with War & Peace at the top and under it the Bible. To see the comments on each post you need to click on the title of it which will take you to the post's own individual page. That has a "permalink" which is a URL that always takes you there and will be something along the lines of www.cambria.wordpress.com/war&pea...
(It also gives you a shortlink which you can use on Twitter, etc - this takes you to the same page as the long one but the link is made up of gibberish instead of describing where it's going).

This is all useful in different ways. If people want to look at your blog on an ongoing basis they look at www.cambria.wordpress.com so they can see all your posts but with the newest one at the top.

If you're linking to a specific post and you want the link to go there long after subsequent posts have knocked it off the front page of your blog, you use the permalink; and if you're on Twitter you use the shortlink.

Is that a bit clearer or did you already know that bit?
JAC

message 89: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments that makes it a little easier to understand. I guess I was thinking that all my reviews would go on the same page but I guess that doesn't make as much sense once you explained it. thanks! :)

message 90: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Well if people just look at your homepage URL it will look as if the reviews are all on one page. If you want, have a play on mine -

http://jaclement.wordpress.com/ is my basic URL
It takes you to the "Summary" type page where if you scroll down far enough you can see that all the blogs come one after the other but not the comments on each individual blog. When I upload next week's blog you'll come back to the same URL but the new article will be at the top.

http://jaclement.wordpress.com/2011/0...
is an example of a permalink. If you hit it now, it goes to Mike's guest-post; if you hit it next week it will still show only Mike's post. This is where you go if you want to see comments.

http://wp.me/p1fCWz-2M
is a shortlink. It should take you to Mike's post just like the longer version above, and the only diff is that it doesn't use 140 letters to do so!!

So you tend to publicise your basic URL ( in my case www.jaclement.wordpress.com ) because that way, whenever people follow the link they get the most up to date stuff first but can navigate round the site to see past reviews or blogs.

Which is the same thing I already said but with working links, I hope!
JAC

message 91: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments oh, and with Wordpress you can copy the link out of the addr bar, in which case it doesn't have the www but just http:// [username] .wordpress.com but if you're giving out the addr and put the www. on instead that works just the same.

That worried me initially but it seems to be interchangeable!

message 92: by Susan (new)

Susan (bookishrevelations) | 112 comments I have a question, that I sort of need an answer to. I recently interviewed Jennifer Bradbury who wrote Wrapped a young adult historical romance/mystery and I was wondering if it would be okay if I posted the interview here on the group and under which topic folder would I need to post it? Ya know, just so I'm not doing things wrong and getting in trouble. It was a really good interview and I would love to be able to share it with you guys.

message 93: by Amy Eye (new)

Amy Eye | 1841 comments Mod
If you have an interview that you would like to put up a link to, you can put the announcement and the link to the blog/website in the "Special Events" folder. :)

Susan (bookishrevelations) | 112 comments Amy wrote: "If you have an interview that you would like to put up a link to, you can put the announcement and the link to the blog/website in the "Special Events" folder. :)"

Well, I actually have two things, I have a guest blog post and then an interview, both of which are with two different author's. So, all I needed to know was where I could post the actual interview or guest post itself. But, I guess posting links would be okay too.

message 95: by Amy Eye (new)

Amy Eye | 1841 comments Mod
You can put both of those in the "Special Events" section. I think links would be better for you, it brings people to your website so maybe they will stay and look around while they are there!!
