S.M. Stirling - The Emberverse Series - I really enjoyed these novels. The premise of these novels is a world changing event that basically throws the Earth back to the dark ages with the laws of science basically turned on their ear. Gunpowder, combustion engines, electricity...all cease to work down to a molecular level and man must survive. This series is fantasy set in a modern day. Hell, there's a group of folks who take the Lord of the Rings and basically make it their Constitution/Bible. Modern day Rangers of Ithilien! Lol. This was one of my first forays into post-apocalyptic literature and I enjoyed them thoroughly though I hear very little in the fantasy community about them. I'd love to see that change. "
This must be the series that starts with "Dies the Fire" and I agree that it is one of the best of the post-apocalyptic series I've ever read. But then I like a lot of what Stirling has written.

A Song of Fir..."
You need to atleast finish Harry Potter. Book 6 is pretty good and the last book is atleast decent and ties up the majority of strings in the story. Book 6 is one of my favorites of the set. Deathly Hallows feels a bit rushed.

Keep thinking I will try one more time.

Sometimes they deserve it (oops, did I say that out loud?).
But I mean a fantasy class - I've ran across a couple of classes that focused on things like video games and their effects on modern society (developlment, etc) and I think with your degrees and the amount of works you've consumed... :-)
I can understand the desire not to take someone's child and try your best not to choke the shit out of them because jail is not a place you want to visit (did I say that out loud, too??). I student taught for a short period of time...but I would have ended up killing one of these ill-mannered brats we have here in DC (and on that note, I've said too much :-)

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
The Dragaeran Series by Steven Brust
The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss
The Noon Universe by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky
The Conan Series by Robert E. Howard
I dropped the Mistborn series after being none to impressed by the first book.

also curious as to your thoughts on the Noon Universe.
i'm also pretty impressed, or confused, by folks' ability to read so many series at once. right now i am at about 18 or 19 or so, and am always trying to find a way to whittle that down. i feel like sissyphus with my various series. whenever i finish one, a new one pops right up into my life.
but then with some series, like SOIF and the abercrombie trilogy (and previously, with Fionavar), i am consciously trying to draw the pleasurable experience out as long as possible. in that goal, martin's writing habits are certainly going to be very helpful to me in the future!

I sat down a while back and tried to finish my list and gave up after I'd added another 30 or 40 authors. It's never ending for which I'm particularly grateful.

I am still waiting for A Dance With Dragons to be released. I enjoyed all the books of SOIF but particularly the first three. The fourth was....incomplete.
I have only read one book of the Noon Universe(Hard to Be A God) by the Strugatsky's and found it an entirely satisfying and intelligently written book. I would categorize it more as a sci-fi fantasy mix than purely fantasy. Hard To Be A God is one of my favorites of all time!

Now, whether or not they actually do get the chance to release it is still up for grabs, but I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed. LOL

Lol copy/paste is the shiznit ;). You have to start the Farseer Trilogy with a quickness!

I have to read Farseer just to find out what you guys are raving about, lol.
I'm hoping I enjoy the Black Company, too... just as an FYI...I'm a wussy. If I cry too much in a book... SMH :)

I have to read Farseer just to find out what you guys are raving about, lol."
Yeah you do! I shouldn't let this one back to the top of my TBR list again, but - wasn't there a buddy read sorta-kinda planned?

I think you're right Tracey! Whenever y'all are ready.

...after that I'm game! :-)

This is part of the series?
It's a sequel series taking place after the Farseer trilogy and Liveship Traders series.

The Wheel of Time: got to book 10.
The Dark Tower: got to book 5.
Dune: I read all six Herbert books. Then I read the first two Anderson/Herbert prequels and stopped.
I finished Gibon's Sprawl series, but that's only three books long.
I won't count Lord of the Rings because it's technically one book in three parts.
I suppose I just like a good standalone story with a definite beginning, middle, and end. Seems to me that, especially with the longer series, so much time passes over the course of the novels that the author's style and message often changes, making the story inconsistent.

Rachel Morgan by Kim Harrison
Mither Mages by Orson Scott Card
The Secrets of the Immoral Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott
And that's about all I can keep up with, for the moment.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

Some of these have years between readings, but I am usually pretty good about remembering what's gone before once I get into the next volume.

Ro-Lan - Mike Sirota
The World Gates - Holly Lisle
The Pearl - Eric Van Lustbader
The Iron Tower - Dennis L McKiernan
Some of these I have had a long time while waiting to complete the series. I don't like to read a series until I have all the books...if possible.
Some of the like 'Ro-Lan' date back to the 1070's !

This series took me a while to read. It's quite different as Grant mentions from most of todays Fantasy. It's heavy reading in a way, but absolutely well worth the effort!
I'm glad you reminded me of it, Mr Dread Pirate Grant!

Speaking of series, is anyone else having the bug issue that i am having with series books in Goodreads? Whenever I try to look at series listing my GR page looks like I'm a visitor and it doesn't show me what's on my shelves.

A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R. R. Martin
Mitch Rapp Series by Vince Flynn
Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind

You're right ... I just looked at Farseer, and every book just says "Add to my shelves", without my ratings. Odd.

I have a bug request out - but since a lot of people aren't complaining it's not being fixed. It drives me crazy.

Have you ever read the Darkover series by MZB? It'll take you forever to get through that one! Or Andre Norton's Witch World? I heart Andre Norton.

Love Andre Norton! I think Silver May Tarnish is a GREAT book...it doesn't give the best explainations of how the world is built because its far from the beginning of the series... a great place to start with the Witch World would be Witch World. Another book I love by Norton is Perilous Dreams. Not in the Witch World series but a great book none the less.
