Laurel A number of us joke that we have a book buying addiction, which made me wonder if I gave a series addiction. I am quite sure that I've missed a few...

1. Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson
2. Wars of Light and Shadow by Janny Wurts
3. Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
4. Miles Vorkosigan Adventures by Lois McMaster Bujold
5. Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
6. New Amsterdam by Elizabeth Bear
7. Dune by Frank Herbert
8. Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss
9. Magicians by Lev Grossman
10. Cheshire Red Reports by Cherie Priest
11. Honor Harrington Series by David Weber
12. Outlanders by Diana Gabaldon
13. Riyria Revelations by Michael Sullivan
14. Thorn and Bone by Greg Keyes
15. Rain Wilds by Robin Hobb
16. First Law by Joe Abercrombie
17. Malazan by Steven Erickson
18. Gentleman Bastard by Scott Lynch
19. Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
20. Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin
21. Land Fit For Heroes by Richard Morgan
22. WWW by Robert Sawyer
23. Otherland by Tad Williams

I left out a few, for example the Mistborn series by Brandon Sandersin (there is a new story on the way) and the Old Man's War series by Joe Scalzi. Plus, I'm sure I've forgotten some.

I think I need a 12 step program!

18. Wild Cards series (edited by) GRRM

Good lord. Those are just the ones I've started and intend to finish someday. There are several others that I started and probably won't try to finish.

2. Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss
3. Gentleman Bastard by Scott Lynch
4. Song of Ice and Fire by GRRM
5. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Should this list include series that we already completed or ones we are still in the process?

message 4: by Laurel (last edited Mar 25, 2011 09:23AM) (new)

Laurel I didn't even think of ones I've completed... But I say, do what you feel!

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to completely ignore this thread henceforth lest I be tempted to list all the series I've read to completion or am still currently reading. God... It would take days to compile and I know I'd leave something off and be annoyed with myself.

Laurel Come on now, Grant. Out bibliophile me - you know you want to! All the cool kids are doing it!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol Laurel you don't know what you're asking. I mean sit and really think of listing every fantasy series you've ever read. I've been reading fantasy nonstop for 20 years. It's an intimidating challenge! Lol lord think of the folks we have that have been reading 3 or 4 decades worth of fantasy!

Completed:
Bas-Lag (for all that it can be called a series) by China Miéville
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake
Black Jewels Trilogy by Ann Bishop (unfortunately)
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
The Belgariad by David Eddings
The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay
Dark Tower by Stephen King
Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. LeGuin
Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson (save for the one shot coming out)
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
The Key's to the Kingdom by Garth Nix
Abhorsen by Garth Nix
And... other things. I can't name them all off, but there is Moorcock, Howard, all them. I've finished most of their series, but I'd have to dig through boxes at my parents house to figure out which ones, or else hunt Wikipedia for a while.

Still Intend to Read More Of:
Discworld by Terry Pratchett
The Orphan's Tale by Catherynne M. Valente
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
The Echorium Sequence by Katherine Roberts
Gor by John Norman
Vlad Taltos by Steven Brust

On-Going (Still Being Published):
Temeraire by Naomi Novik
Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson

There are numerous, numerous authors (Martin, Jordan, Goodkind, Paolini) who I have completely abandoned because I can't stand their works, as well, but I don't think I'll list them all off, lest we use up my character limit. :P You can check my Goodreads list for books I gave one or two stars and only ranked the first book if you care.

Nor am I listing series that aren't pretty much Definitely fantasy. I've pretty much read every work by the listed authors except for five or six of them.

So yeah. I like fantasy novels :) Darn you Laurel that was hard. I'm only stopping now because company showed up and there's a pretty nasty glower aimed at me :D

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments wow, grant, wow!

- is The Magicians a series?

- i also feel like i have countless Piers Anthony. i hide him in the very back of the bottom shelf of my bookcase.

- okay when you have a few minutes to think about your books, i have a request: 2 short lists! one list of your top favorites and another of series that are great but underrated or rarely mentioned. give me some books to add to my to-read list. your list is great but so huge that looking at it is like climbing a mountain...but i think i only have enough stamina to climb a couple hills.

i just enjoy reading lists of folks' favorites. i've already got some great-looking suggestions from other lists on this thread. great topic.

gosh, Gor...i'm surprised! what do you think? i've only read Slave Girl of Gor. that one was sort of fascinating at times but also made my skin crawl, and not in a good way as with some horror. i'm really curious to hear what you think about the series because i never really considered reading another. but i've also read that Slave Girl is the most extreme and the rest of the series is more straightforward burroughs-style.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

@Grant; Great list. :) I've read the first book of a good majority of those, but I think I've only gone onto the second in a handful of them. Never found the other Eddings books in my bookstore, but I've been thinking of picking them up online somewhere since I really liked him. Any opinions on the other series compared to Belgariad?

@mark; They're a bit pulpy, obviously, but I do enjoy my pulp fiction. For what they are, I think they're a spot of good fun, and I'd read more, although I doubt I'll ever finish the series. Quite the long runner. And the 'subject matter'... well, I'm definitely not bothered by it. That's all I'll say on that. :P

Mark wrote "is The Magicians a series? "

Yessir, the sequel, The Magician's King, should be out sometime soon hopefully :). Also I'll gladly begin compiling the two lists you requested, my friend.

Alexandra wrote "Any opinions on the other series compared to Belgariad?"

Hmm...The Belgariad kind of holds a special place in my heart since it was one of the very first fantasy series that I ever fell in love with (I was like 9 the first read through). The Malloreon is similar in pacing and characterization to the Belgariad and almost as enjoyable in my opinion. As for The Elenium and Tamuli, well they're fun and quick reads that focus more on characterization that story line. I did really love the character of Sir Sparhawk. I'm a sucker for knights :) If you enjoyed the Belgariad then you'll likely like these two as well but to a lesser degree. Eddings tends to stick to rather trite characters but considering when he wrote them, I suppose it wasn't quite as overdone ;) I recommend all his work (even The Redemption of Althalus) except for the Dreamers. As I and a few others touched on in another thread, it was a pretty awful series.

Geez, I've already thought of at least 20 more fantasy authors/series that I forgot. I feel as though I'm insulting them, ya know? Silly. I feel the urge to apologize for not mentioning that I'd read all the works of Friedman and McCaffrey and Bakker and Howard and Moon (Sorry Mike! Don't know how I missed Paksenarrion) and well yeah....Others. I think this is a losing battle. And yet having read all these authors and all their works, I've still managed to find tons of new authors and books that are amazing and even a few old ones that I overlooked. I freaking Love Goodreads.

message 32: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 26, 2011 01:40AM) (new)

All righty then, Mark....So my favorite fantasy series. Well let's see. I don't think I could put my favorites in an absolute order so take the numbering with a grain of salt.

1. Patrick Rothfuss - The Kingkiller Chronicles.
(Er duh.)
2. Robin Hobb - The Farseer Trilogy
(hmm...secretly I think this is my fav of favs)
3. Jim Butcher - The Dresden Files
(I relate to Dresden. Alot.)
4. Steven Erikson - Malazan Book of the Fallen Series (Deadhouse Gates is my fav)
5. George R.R. Martin - A Song of Ice and Fire
(I'm a dark person at heart so this series hits home more than once)
6. Robin Hobb - The Tawny Man Trilogy
(I just had to list her again...)

So I'm racking my brain and I can think of Hundreds of novels I really, really like and that I could read over and over. These however are the only books/series that I truly love. I could point out moment after moment in a dozen books that moved me to my core but even so no other novels have stayed with me the way these have.

message 34: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 26, 2011 02:09AM) (new)

Fantasy series that are under-rated or rarely mentioned. That's a bit of a tough question as well but a couple do spring to mind.

Carol Berg - The Rai-Kirah Series - Carol Berg is probably the most under rated author I know. I love everything this woman has ever written with a passion. I've never really understood why she hasn't become more popular. One can hope :)

J.V. Jones - The Book of Words Trilogy- This has always been a fav of mine. It's never made a best of fantasy list and Jones is far better known for her Sword of Shadows series but I really, really enjoyed The Baker's Boy and it's sequels. I'd recommend it to those who enjoyed Memory, Sorrow and Thorn or The Farseer Trilogy.

Mervyn Peake - The Gormenghast Series - These novels will not be for everyone. This is classic fantasy, not high action or dark grit or any of the other norms for fantasy today. I find myself at a bit of a loss to describe this series but I'll say that it's a classic that very, very rich in character and detail and imagination and a book that I think should be read by anyone who really takes fantasy seriously. Those in the know appreciate it but many casual readers or those new to the genre tend to forget the classics that paved the way.

S.M. Stirling - The Emberverse Series - I really enjoyed these novels. The premise of these novels is a world changing event that basically throws the Earth back to the dark ages with the laws of science basically turned on their ear. Gunpowder, combustion engines, electricity...all cease to work down to a molecular level and man must survive. This series is fantasy set in a modern day. Hell, there's a group of folks who take the Lord of the Rings and basically make it their Constitution/Bible. Modern day Rangers of Ithilien! Lol. This was one of my first forays into post-apocalyptic literature and I enjoyed them thoroughly though I hear very little in the fantasy community about them. I'd love to see that change.

Hmm...perhaps I'll add some more later but for the moment this will hopefully sate you, Mark. It's 4am and while I don't sleep much to speak of that's a bit late even for me :) Let me know if you end up reading any of these :)

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol...I always edit for spelling, even if I find an error weeks after the fact.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay Gormenghast! :) I love me some classic fantasy, which is probably why I can name more oneshots than not only series, but all the books in those series. :P Of course, I drift towards the Victorian era mostly, so pre-Peake, but I appreciate anything that is basically out of the Tolkien area of influence.

message 37: by Lina (new)

Lina Al-Midfa Grant!! that's so impressive!! I haven't even completed a mere third of your list,,, not even a quarter lol.
I'm going to look at your list for references from now on lol, I'll be printing it and ticking every series as I grow older.

I'm not sure you remember, but you recommended J.V. Jones and Lois McMaster Bujold to me once before.

I dont think Lois is on your list... just a reminder =)

message 38: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 26, 2011 02:24AM) (new)

Good for you Alexandra. It's a pleasure to see the younger generation (cause I'm so very old) reaching out and embracing the classics of the genre. We're all taught to read Steinbeck and Tolstoy and Nabokov and Hemingway and Joyce and Shakespeare but you don't hear Peake too often ;) Fantasy classics you have to work for a bit!

As for Victorian era lit, well once upon a time I had to do a 50 page thesis on Victorian lit so suffice it to say that I've tread rather lightly on those grounds ever since ;) Too much of a good thing as they say...

message 39: by mark (new)

i'm not sure i've even heard of j.v. jones. i think i have something called Spirit Lense by carol berg on my list.

it's about 4am my time now too, but i think i will read JUST one more chapter of Name of the Wind. its already been over 4 off-and-on hours of reading, what's another half hour more?

Lol...you know I got my english lit and ancient civ degrees with the intention of being a college professor. Then I student taught and realized I was the worst teacher ever. I don't suffer fools lightly. I was compassionate and considerate when it came to those who wished to learn but were having a hard time but as for those who didn't care or didn't make an effort...well I had no desire to have them in my presence and made sure to make their lives miserable. As I said...worst teacher ever. I hate people that don't want to learn so to answer your question...Nope :) Never considered doing any type of class though if I ever move back to a real city someday I'd love to get into the publishing field.

Wistful Dream After reading this discussion I'd have to say my answer to the question would be "not enough".

Tracey (stewartry) Hmm.

*pulls up Big Giant List of favorite and favorite-ish writers, copies*
*edits out all non-fantasy writers*
*edits out everything else except titles of series I have actually read something in*
*eliminates duologies, changes mind, changes mind back, decides to play it by ear*
*takes nap*

This isn't complete, I suppose; there have been quite a few series I've started and lost track of, or – more often – started and recoiled from in horror. For example, this does not include Yasmine Galenorn's abysmal piece of self-indulgent garbage about the supernatural sisters which made me long for brain bleach, and there are no sparkly vampires here though I reluctantly admit to having read one book about them.
