MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Ok, so my husband and I were picking on the movie Interception (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/)... and I kept trying to think of where I'd heard of the idea from before...

...then I realized that Interception was basically lifted from the Andre Norton classic Perilous Dreams Perilous Dreams by Andre Norton . In Perilous Dreams there are people who are "dreamers" who can create whole worlds. They are connected to their clients via dreaming caps.

What other "original" movies can you identify in older books?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol umm Inception maybe? :P

They also ripped off the plot of Inception from Duck Tales, the old Disney cartoon. Seriously!

message 3: by Traci (new)

Traci The short story Call Me Joe by Poul Anderson has similarities to the movie Avatar. Same premise of a paralyzed man who uses a tall blue cat like alien as an avatar and likes his new body better. No other aliens. No love interest. No creatures. But still...had to be an influence atleast.

damnit, now I'm going to have that song in my head all day
life is like a hurricane...

Scott Avatar was so derivative in general.

But maybe Ducktales (I saw that one, too) ripped that off from Andre Norton, too.

I haven't seen this movie at all. I just wasn't motivated.

message 8: by Lina (new)

Lina Al-Midfa Avatar reminded me soo much of Pocahontas lol.

I can see that (without seeing the movie).

message 10: by Lina (new)

Lina Al-Midfa @MrsJoseph

I must admit I liked them both (I'm a sucker for the red indian movie themes) and halfway through avatar, I was like,,,,hmmmm,,,, where have I seen this before?!?!

I also wanted to ask if anyone saw the Godfather movies or read the books? cos I'm trying to figure out which book corresponds to the 2nd godfather movie?

I know they're not fantasy, but I enjoyed The Godfather (book) so so much!

message 11: by Traci (new)

Traci I don't think the second movie is based on a book. If you read the first book I believe it has flashbacks of the godfather's youth. But it's been awhile since I read them.

message 12: by Lina (last edited Mar 22, 2011 12:21PM) (new)

Lina Al-Midfa It's been a while since I read it too....
thats true about the flashbacks now that you mention them, but you know Michael Corleone (or Al Pacino lol), his part in the 2nd movie. I was wondering.....

message 13: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I've never read them...which is strange cause I ran through the James Bond (that's Bond, James Bond!) books like the plauge. Very enjoyable.

message 14: by Lina (new)

Lina Al-Midfa lol =)

message 15: by Bill (new)

Bill (billymac) | 20 comments Oh, the Godfather novel was magnificent. It's been so long since I've read it, but I think the movie was pretty faithful to it. I also don't think Godfather II was based on a novel, just as a sequel (or prequel) to the first. Man, I loved those two movies.

The Sicilian by Mario Puzo was a pretty good read, also. It's a sidebar to The Godfather, which takes place when Michael had fled to Sicily.

message 16: by Lina (new)

Lina Al-Midfa Thanks Bill, I haven't read the Sicilian, but definately will now.

Mach | 572 comments I thought Avatar was great.
If you haven't seen the third godfather movie don't watch it, it's really bad, it is nothing like the first two which were good.

message 18: by Bets (new)

Bets (betsdavies) Inception and Avatar both have classic, classic plots. I am not sure you can even find where they originally ripped from. They only seem mind blowing and original to people who aren't used to the genre.

(Duck Tales was ripped--badly--from Carl Bark's comics)

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I can see Dances with Wolves being similar in plot to Avatar. I'm sure there are far older examples in movies/literature (A Man Called Horse) but recycling plots is a rather common thing in Hollywood these days. There's seldom an original idea to be had.

message 20: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Shocking! I'll have you know there are hundreds of screenwriters all over Los Angeles (but not actually in Hollywood, because it's pretty ghetto and washed up) with incredibly original plots but there just isn't anyone who will take the time to read their work because it's all a conspiracy to...yeah, I can't even go on with that as a joke. Sometimes it was a sad place to live.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

You lived in Hollywood? I was born there. What part of L.A. did you live in?

message 22: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Very close to Hollywood, almost in West Hollywood. I was just south of Sunset between Fairfax and La Brea for the last 2 years and not far from that for the first. How about you?

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah. I was all over. North Hollywood, Van Nuys, Canoga Park, up around Valencia. I'm not a California guy. It's a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there again

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Huntington Beach > wherever you two were.

I don't even know what I'm talking about. I lived there until I was 9 then moved to Washington. I vaguely recall a 7-11 and a Ralph's supermarket. Aside from that, Cali is just one big sunny blur.

message 25: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments I loved being in Cali. Loved the weather, the amount of food you could get, there was just so much going on. I preferred staying out of the Valley, and for the most part did. It is hilarious, the best Chinese place I found out there was run by a little old lady and her husband and I shit you not, they'd moved there from Knoxville. Used to have a restaurant right down the street from where I was born. Hilarious.

I miss El Cholo's green corn tamales something fierce.

Huntington Beach is nice. It's one of those places with possibility if my boyfriend eventually finds work down there instead of the more likely Bay Area.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I was born in Cali but now only go back to visit. I'm really a Southern Girl ;-).

The weather is Cali is great but the prices? Gosh, DC is just as bad (if not worse) but at least I can jump in my car and be in NC in less than 10 hours. Deal.

message 27: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Where do you go in NC that takes 10 hours? I'm in Charlotte and it takes me about 6 to get to Woodbridge.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Denae wrote: "Where do you go in NC that takes 10 hours? I'm in Charlotte and it takes me about 6 to get to Woodbridge."

Well, it's typically 5 hours but in the summer traffic makes it anywhere from 7-8.5 hours (yeah, brutal).
Durham

message 29: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Ah. Yeah, I won't miss making the drive up there and back monthly. That stretch between Durham and Petersburg is brutally boring, especially having done it for nearly a year.

message 30: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Ha! That's where my mom lives (Petersburg). You know that entire strech of 85 between the city part of Petersburg and Dinnwiddie county is a speed trap, right?

But that is a brutal drive. I'm hoping you are traveling during off-peak hours? Why monthly? But if you're in the area, we should go out for coffee!

I agree it did! And whoever mentioned Duck Tales, thanks, now I got the part of the theme song in my head, "Duck Tales, woo-oo..." dunno the rest of the words, but that li'l snippet keeps repeating... ugh... But I used to watch that show like crazy when I was a kid! And what was that other one... Rescue Rangers? With the mice, the fat one, and the girl one, and the chipmunks, Chip and Dale? Yea, those were good shows to my pre-school/kindergarten self :)

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol...Sorry about getting that stuck in your head Kit! I used to watch Rescue Rangers too...I loved the fat Australian one too ;) and the fly!
