I read
12. In the Woods 4/19

and I deleted another 639 books from my tbr shelf that I am no longer interested in reading. I still have many more pages to go through. It looks like when I first joined in 2010 I went add happy and added a ton of books.

message 105: by Lára (new)

Lára Don´t hate me for it, I just have to say it ... to anyone who organize their books by "genre" - could you, please, watch what you´re placing on, for example "young adult" shelf, because books on goodreads are well, labeled how members label them.

we had problems in fantasy group over books that are fantasy but were shelved as young adult (but are not ya at all) and people were fighting because ya couldn´t be nominated for book of month. it may not seem important to you, but people do chose books by how they´re shelved and maybe some of you even experianced some problems with this, like you check the recommendation under romance and you get thriller or cookbook

I always get erotica under paranormal and it´s driving me crazy!

Please, please just be careful how you shelf particular book, no for me but for the sake of all goodreads members. (:

Lára, are you talking to me? Do you mean a specific book? Because I finally divided mine into three categories:
genre-ya-young-adult ‎(68)
genre-ya-young-adult-teen ‎(5)
genre-ya-young-adults-mature ‎(9)
...and then they went an added a NEW category entitled..."new adult" ...at least I think that is what it is called.

Lára No, Lisa Kay, to everyone. (;
I´m not planning on checking who adds what and where, I just wanted to ask people to be careful, that´s all.

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments Update:

Read:
13. Notes of a Tourist on Planet Earth

Removed another 1,174 books from my TBR list.

Going through my list has made me realize a few bad habits that I have.

1. When someone recommends a book in a series, I tend to add every single book in that series before I even know if I'm going to like the first book.

2. I tend to add books from Goodreads lists, based on their cover only.

3. I tend to download a ton of free books on Amazon...and end up reading the description later and not wanting to read the book.

4. I don't need to have the 1001 books to read before I die all in my tbr list. There is a spreadsheet, so I can work from that instead of clogging up my tbr list with books I may or may not really want to read someday.

Now it's time to attack the bookshelves.

message 109: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments I've narrowed my bookshelves down to 42. The staying ones are narrowed way down. Many of the others are challenge shelves and those will go away when the challenge ends or the end of the year.

Also read Revolution World which has been on my list forever.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments So, this is actually something I've been planning to do for a few weeks now but just haven't gotten around to for one reason or another. As it happens, I decided to look through all of the old challenges in this group and lo and behold, here was this one, calling out to me!

Details:
Duration: Unspecified. Starting date May 19, 2013. Going to take a casual approach with this one and play it by ear.

The Cleaning
*Make new bookshelves and get rid of the irrelevant ones.
*Slowly go through all of your books and move them to their appropriate shelves.
*While going through your to-read books delete the ones that no longer interest you. (You may be surprised by how many books no longer interest you).
*Go through every book on TBR and tag them "library" if they are available at my library. (WIP)
*While going through TBR, consider which year-long or open-ended challenges would work for each book. Make note of Title, Author, Series Name on text file with saved challenge info for reference.
Be sure to post the name of the shelves you created or deleted below. As with all of our challenges we want to see your progress.

The Reading
*Make a list of all the books you own but are unread.
*After 'cleaning' up your TBR book shelf make a list of the books that you want to read the most.
(Tip: You may want to look at the ones that have been on the list the longest)
*After completing the list making process, come up with a game plan to read as many books as possible.
*Read!
Be sure to list all of the books you read for this challenge below. Let us know if they were pre-owned or on your TBR list.

Optional
Pre Challenge Survey

*How many books do you currently have on your TBR list? 1846 (LOL)
*How many bookshelves do you have? 117 (is that too many? I'm not sure, hehe. I have a lot of shelves named for months/years that I read books as a reference)
*How many unread books do you own (consider eBooks, paperback, and hardcover)? A bunch! Too many! 3 book cases or so. And most of them are NOT listed on my GR shelves, which is something I've been wanting to fix.
*How many books do you want to read for this challenge? Not sure yet. I guess we'll start with 12 and see how it goes. Seems low but I am not sure how I'm working this challenge at this time.

Post Challenge Survey

*How many books did you read overall for this challenge?
*How many of them were already owned? On your TBR list?
*Did you create any bookshelves? If so, how many?
*Did you remove any books from your TBR list while organizing your bookshelf? If so, how many?
*Did this challenge help you to organize your bookshelves or to your wheedle down your TBR list?

Progress:

First thing I'm going to do is look at shelves with the lowest book counts on them to see what is there and if the shelf is relevant or needs to be expanded with other books.
*Removed "ya-club-2012" shelf because I had just two books on it and it was for a challenge I did not complete last summer for a group I wasn't very active in. Those books are on other shelves.
*Merged 'ya' into 'young-adult'

*Merged 'thrillers' with 'thriller'; deleted 'thrillers'
*Merged 'comedy' with 'humor'; deleted 'comedy'
*Deleted something 'lost', for an old challenge I never did
*Deleted 'urban fantasy' because I only had one book there and I don't read much UF and if I do, it usually has a more specific tag
*Deleted two 'winter challenge' related shelves, due to them being so long ago they no longer feel relevant (books are tagged other categories, though)
*Deleted 'spring challenge' for same reason as above
*Deleted 'fall challenge 2010' for same reason as above
*Merged 'mysteries' into 'mystery'; deleted 'mysteries'
*Deleted 'police-procedural' and merged those with either 'cops' or 'detectives', etc.
*Deleted 'not-quite-a-romance-novel' because I don't feel like bothering with it
*Deleted 'ya-romance' because I don't feel like figuring out which books fit the 'romance' sub-category
*Deleted 'true crime' because I had only one book there and I rarely read that genre
*Deleted 'supernatural' and changed 'paranormal' to 'paranormal-supernatural' to cut down on tags

I have a LOT of shelves that are named for different challenges (such as blue-cover or named for a location in case of a country/state challenge). I'm debating if I want to continue that trend or try to streamline my shelf names, which will make things harder to track in future challenges...

(view spoiler)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments Count me in please. I did this last year, and already my shelves need cleaned up again.

Pre Challenge Survey
How many books do you currently have on your TBR list? 1,158
How many bookshelves do you have? 50
How many unread books do you own (consider eBooks, paperback, and hardcover)? There are probably about 300 regular books, and Amazon says my Kindle library contains 1690 items.
How many books do you want to read for this challenge? I am graduating school in May and getting married in June, so I don't want to be too overzealous with my goal. Let's start with 20.

It is my goal to read 20 books chosen from the following books (more to be added as I go through my shelves to delete what I don't want to read anymore and see which books I own that have been collecting dust:
Dark Lover
Fearless Fourteen
Bruja Brouhaha
Matched
Killer Crust
Foretold
Neverwhere
Dark Flame
The Mephisto Covenant: The Redemption of Ajax
Spell Bound
Tempestuous
The Likeness
Murder on the Menu
Dearly Depotted
The Secret
Changeling
No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels
Dead Beat
Torment
A Tale Dark & Grimm
The Things They Carried
Bitten
Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto
The Immortal Rules
Waiter Rant: Thanks for the Tip-Confessions of a Cynical Waiter
Spell Bound
Witch & Wizard
Halo
The Tiger's Wife

Updates:
4/6/14 Deleted 310 books from my TBR shelf. Most of these are because I found an author I wanted to try and massed added everything they wrote before even reading the first book. This was a bad habit I had the last Spring Cleaning Challenge as well.

4/6/14 read Dearly Depotted

4/7/14 Deleted 11 shelves. Deleted 115 more books - more mass adds, but also ones I'm reading the descriptions of and I'm no longer interested in reading.

4/8/14 Deleted 69 books, again reading descriptions and no longer interested in reading.

4/9/14 Deleted another 178 books.

4/10/14 Deleted another 21 books and 4 shelves. I think I'm done deleting books. Will be revisiting shelves later.

4/12/14 Read Bruja Brouhaha
4/14/14 Read Murder on the Menu

4/17/14 Went through my bookshelf at home and added in the books I own that are not on my Goodreads shelves.

4/19/14 Did some actual spring cleaning (as opposed to virtual) and got rid of some books that have been sitting on my shelf more than a decade that I haven't gotten around to reading and probably never will.

4/20/14 Read Torment
4/23/14 Read The Immortal Rules
4/22/14 Read Neverwhere
4/24/14 Read Bitten

4/24/14 Deleted Fifty Shades Darker because after 134 pages I couldn't force myself to read another word.

4/25/14 Read No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels

5/12/14 Read Tempestuous

5/21/14 Read The Mephisto Covenant: The Redemption of Ajax

6/4/14 Read Halo

Yes, I've done that, too. I've got to watch that.

I think I've got all my "next-in-series" 'tagged' and my "series-a" etc. 'tagged,' which was a big job.

What I really need to do is get rid of of those "Kindle-freebies" I'll never read.

I have that problem too! I have 1690 books in my Kindle library and most of them are free. I need to clean up my Goodreads shelves and then clean up my Kindle. Yikes! I'm a book hoarder.

Kristie | 3595 comments Lol! I'm a book hoarder too. I can't pass up a freebie that looks interesting. I can't stand to get rid of them either!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Whoa. 1690! I only have 216, which is too many "Kindle Freebies." Alas, they are hard to pass up, just because I see so many that I did pass up and wished I'd gotten.
