SOLVED!: Children's book- read in early 90's about an egg [s]

I remember having a book read to us in junior school about a child (girl/boy im not sure) who finds an egg in the woods or on a beach. I think that the kid thinks its a stone and so puts it on top of the tv (i vividly remember this bit). However i think that the "stone" starts to grow and might have hatched. I have a vague memory that this was set at the seaside or the child was visiting someone on holiday. I'm not sure.

This book would have been read to me in the early 1990's so im not sure when it was published.
Any ideas would be brilliant- i'ts driving me crazy!
