Hmmmm that really depends on your definition of a happy ending honestly. I mean there's a truly happy ending like in a fairy tale, you know? But I'd say a lot of hers are happy endings in the sense that the best thing for the characters might have come about. But no, I'd say most don't have a happy ending. They DO conquer hard issues, that's the nature of her writing. They're supposed to be about tough issues that no one else wants to write about lol as I think about it. If you're willing to try it, I'd say go for it and just give her a try. Some people just don't like her, that's your right to have your own opinion : ) I would say a couple of her milder books are Harvesting the Heart and Tales of the Humpback Whale both are more stories of a mother and daughter I'd say. If you want something a little more hard hitting, edgier, and certainly more heart striking go with Plain Truth (Amish), Nineteen Minutes (school shooting), The Pact (teenage suicide pact...or was it? lol). Please, feel free to ask me any questions you have!! : )

Judy I'm reading Small Town Mom's the dual book by Janet Tronstad and Debra Clopton. Still on Janet's story and as usual I been teary eyed through some of it.

Another great story so far Janet!

Off to a night game for Spring Training 8 days and counting and then I'll have more reading time again :-)

Hi Jennifer, "Radical" is a powerful book. Our book club read it last fall and I'm still thinking about it.

Victoria Bylin (victoriabylin) | 18 comments I'm reading "Valley of Decision," a family saga about the Pittsburgh steel industry. It was written in the 1940s. So different from today's books! It's around 800 pages, lots of characters, lots of POV switches, lots of detail. Fascinating read, but it's not a quick book. I'm plodding along but loving it.

Thanks Hannah! I'll keep that in mind!

Hmm... I should have Janet's book here somewhere. I have a subscription so I get them early. I can't remember where I put it though. :( Guess it's time to clean the book area again.

That sounds interesting. I am a history nerd! I will have to check it out. I like when books have more than one or two POV.

message 85: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah-banana) | 60 comments LOL Dream! Something about daughters ; )

Okay finished Someone at the Door this afternoon! As good as I remembered from last time and the end TOTALLY got me again! Love when that happens : ) Started a new one this time, not a reread (yay!). It's called Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. It's a YA and I'm already over 50 pages into it. It's quite interesting. Really makes you think about death and the afterlife. This author's perspective is something I've never thought about before! Very good so far!
