Posting a few hours early, but here's our next shelf! :DHope everyone has a great weekend!!
OUR NEXT SHELF IS ..... 'ya-fantasy'
DIRECT LINK: 'ya-fantasy'
Happy Reading, Everyone!!
For the shelf "ya-fantasy", can we also read a book that's both in the "fantasy" and "ya" shelf? I want to read The Trouble With Spells and it qualifies as both a YA and fantasy book, but because it's not so popular no one shelved it as ya-fantasy.Or is that considered cheating?
Sorry Celine, whatever book you read must be on the shelf that is picked. If The Trouble with Spells isn't on the YA Fantasy shelf you'll have to pick something else. There are over 3,000 books listed, I'm sure you'll find one. :)
Ooooh, choices! Ummmmm...no idea what I'll read. Let me get my March challenges out of the way and sign up for April and I'll see what'll fit. My shortlist (from just the first 5 pages!) is:
...not that I have a lot of YA books scattered about the house :)
Vampire Academy is really good series... but I liked Beautiful Creatures a lot too. It's different, and the main character is a boy, not a girl, which gives another POV to the usual story.
I've read Vampire Academy before, but have the rest to read so if I pick that I'll be reading all 6. Beautiful Creatures I have out from the library so it just depends where I can stick them on monthly challenges. Glad to hear you're a fan though - I've heard mixed things about BC.

Crazy amount of choices. I still haven't read like half of those either. Sooo many good ones, Nairabell.
I'm gonna have to think about what I want to read for the ya-fantasy shelf today. I finished the monthly challenge I did this month, so I'm gonna re-read
before
comes out in a little over a week. Hmmm..... Think think think.....

Well, Alyssa,
is there on the 1st page of the list, if you're going to read it anyway. Re-reads are allowed ;)
I have been holding on to two ya books in case this shelf came up. I have
or
. This is a tough choice, I am going with
for my ya-fantasy shelf.
Eeek!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't decide! I panicked thinking I didn't have any more YA on hand (OK, re-reads aside)...but I do, and now I'm just waffling on which book. I'll sleep on it and let ya know.
Zaanodes wrote: "ya fantasy Hunger Games"Great choice!!! I loved that (yep, finally made up my mind!) Bought a copy for my son to read, too, in his language...some rather interesting discussion about it, too! Quite a change from all the Harry Potter he's been reading recently!

After raiding my oldest daughters books I am going to read
for the ya-fantasy shelf. This was a hard one! So many books to choose from :D
Finished Tithe for the ya-fantasy shelf - 03/27 - 2.5 stars. It was a fast read and strangely compelling, but at the end it left me with a hollow feeling and wishing i could take back the time i spent reading it. The story was interesting at first, about a strange, rebellious girl who turns out to be a changeling, but the action is sparse, the characters seem cartoonish and barely sketched and the big mystery reveal at the end laughable. Even the few fairy riddles throughout the book are childish. The writing style was clean and easy to follow except for some strange descriptive parts, and there were some gratuitous horrific images thrown in for sensationalism's sake i guess because most of the book had the feel of a basic ya story (actually it did remind me of Need, which i disliked immensely). I'm not sure if i'll continue with the series, but probably not, there are so many great books out there...
Bummer about the bad read, Miss!!! At least it was quick!Jackie, what did you think of the first in that series? I've seen the covers (or something similar) around, but not really looked into it...
I'll update later today...off to work (bleh) and still undecided! Yikes.
ya fantasy Hunger Games 4 stars I really didn't expect to like this book. Not only did I like it, but "nnnnoooooo" came out of my mouth at the end. Damn, I hate cliffhangers! Now, I have to add another book to my TBR!
LOL! I had the same expectation, but I was forewarned (that I'd truly want to read the next in series) and got ahold of all three before I even started...I was able to wait a little bit between 1 & 2...but NOT between 2 & 3...very good series.
Good Golly, girls! I haven't even picked my book yet and two have already finished?! Eeek! Time to pick and read. LOL! WTG!{Team Stats Updated}
The Sixie Chicks are hot! That's all there is to it...I still haven't decided on mine either...pressure!
@ Judithe I gave Wake 4 stars and it was a quick read which is one of the reasons I picked Fade to read because I won't have much time to read this week.
His mother tongue is Japanese, so, I speak English & some Japanese to him, he responds in Japanese and some English, but reads in Japanese...With The Hunger Games, only book 1 has been translated...I told him he needs to work on his English reading skills so he can read the next two...he gave me one of those eye-rolling looks that teens have perfected...
Judithe wrote: "His mother tongue is Japanese..."Considering you are in Japan, that would have been my first guess!
Miss wrote: "cool:) was it difficult to learn Japanese?"Well...when you're surrounded by it 24/7, it's not so difficult! LOL. It depends, I've still got a lot to learn, and I wouldn't do so well in a classroom as my reading and writing skills are not strong enough, but I do just fine in daily life. In terms of grammar & pronunciation, it's a lot easier to learn than English because Japanese is a fairly regular language (not so many exceptions to the rule). The kanji (Chinese characters) scare many people off, but they are fun to learn. Son would just choke if he heard me say that as he HATES doing kanji drills...
BTW, what are everyone else's languages? (And which do you prefer to read in?)

I finished City of Bones
5*'s on 3/29/11 for the ya-fantasy shelf. I was happily surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did. I have had this book on my tbr shelf for about 2 years now and wasn't sure if I would like it. The premise of this story was different than so many of the books out there as far as the mythology of Clary's world that it was a nice change of pace. I am interested to see what the twist at the end means for Clary's story in the future, as far as her personal life is concerned. Of course, now I have to go pick up book 2 :)
Briar Rose by Jane YolenMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I finished this tonight...very good read. (copy of posted review)
I was just trying to pick a category for this story and found myself stumped. Yolen has taken the tale of Briar Rose and woven it as Gemma's memory of her situation during the Holocaust. She has told the story to her grandchildren many times over the years. Becca makes a death bed promise to her grandmother, Gemma, to find the castle. Woven in with the memories of that story, this story tells of the Becca's search. Though it is one of The Fairy Tale Series, it is not a fairy tale, but rather a beautiful and poignant trip exploring memory and one of the most horrific times in recent human history. The author's note at the end says, "Happy-ever-after is a fairy tale notion, not history." This is quite true, but she has shown how people find happiness even after and while experiencing the worst of things.

LOL...you know when you post a review and it gives you the link...that's where I copied this from! I was trying to figure out how to rearrange the html to make it more reasonable...but gave up!
I have finished my ya-fantasy book.Fade read 3/29/2011 3 stars.
Janie is now a narc and is given a dangerous assignment of helping to find a sexual predator at school. Janie also learns what is in store for her in the future because of her 'gift'. Cabel was great in this book, but did go through a moment of stupid. Overall I liked the book but felt like it was missing something.
