Traci (highxflyer) | 12 comments I currently have three pages of books waiting to be read on my Kindle and several more that are still on my computer, waiting to be put onto my Kindle. I'm slowly plugging through them though. However, I'll have gotten two books out of the way by the time the weekend is over so I'd say I'm making pretty good progress!

Speak--I cannot seem to get into that book!! I know everyone thinks it is GREAT---but I cannot get into it.

Mischelle (Misc) | 2 comments CATCH-22
I just can't seem to finish this book. I'm in page 234 and I just can't pick it up again. I may need to start all over again. I bought the book to read because I wanted to know where the phase "Catch-22" comes from and what it really means. The story just rambles on and on not getting to a point. I've been stuck on the page for about 2 years. What do I do?!

One book that has definitely been on my shelf for a long while now and that I still have yet to get to is Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. Been meaning to read it but with all the other books that I have been buying, it just seems to have been pushed further and further down my list. I hope to get to it this summer, the edition I got looks pretty awesome (and I heard good things about it) xD

message 55: by Nada (new)

Nada Al-Karmi (nadooush) the book i seem to push back is Les Misérables. i heard it was awesome but the edition i have looks intimidating.

message 57: by Ebony (new)

Ebony (poppyy) Haha Lots of unread books I see! I have gotten to the point now that if it has been unread for more then 6 months I turn it in for store credit at my local used book store.

Gah! I wish my unread shelves were few enough to read in 6 months. I have simply gotten to the point that I am not allowed to buy a book unless I read 2 that I already own (and hopefully get rid of at least 1 of them so I can make room for the new book).

message 59: by Kay (new)

Kay (koalakt) | 8 comments I like Jamie's rule (read 2, get rid of 1,before obtaining a new one). Now to apply it! 125 on the "next book to read" shelf at the moment, from the most recent festival and a going-out-of-business bookstore binge...

Ellen (elliearcher) I'm embarrassed to even begin to admit how many unread books I have sitting on my shelf, glaring at me. Here's a few: Heresy by S.J. Parris The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley Death of a Gossip (Hamish Macbeth, #1) by M.C. Beaton Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace The White Queen (Cousins' War, #1) by Philippa Gregory The Recognitions by William Gaddis Call It Sleep by Henry Roth Giles Goat Boy by John Barth Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon The Mystery of the Blue Train (Poirot) by Agatha Christie The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon Her Royal Spyness (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #1) by Rhys Bowen Maisie Dobbs (Maisie Dobbs, #1) by Jacqueline Winspear Twenty Grand And Other Tales of Love and Money by Rebecca Curtis All Souls Day by Cees Nooteboom Agatha Raisin and the Day the Floods Came (Agatha Raisin, #12) by M.C. Beaton Moloka'i by Alan Brennert Joseph Heller's Catch 22 (Monarch Notes) by Walter James Miller The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford Mansfield Park by Jane Austen Murder on Lexington Avenue (A Gaslight Mystery, #12) by Victoria Thompson Murder on Waverly Place (A Gaslight Mystery, #11) by Victoria Thompson The Mapping of Love and Death (Maisie Dobbs, #7) by Jacqueline Winspear Changeless (The Parasol Protectorate, #2) by Gail Carriger Blameless (The Parasol Protectorate, #3) by Gail Carriger Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld Behemoth (Leviathan, #2) by Scott Westerfeld Shriek An Afterword by Jeff VanderMeer City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff VanderMeer The Queen of Patpong A Poke Rafferty Thriller by Timothy Hallinan
And these are just the books I should have already read but first I have to finish the 30 "currently reading" ones.
But that's another post!

Haha, I always judge books by their covers and maybe I shouldn't but I just do...it's too late to break the habit.

My unread books that are literally on my shelf:

Interview with the Vampire,
The World According to Garp
Elsewhere
Ella Minnow Pea
Breathe My Name
The Tales of Beedle the Bard
1984
The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Thing Around Your Neck
and those are just the ones I can see right now from where I'm typing this

Melissa I don't have a great many unread books on my shelf... my book budget is limited so if I buy them I read them. I did have Karen Marie Moning's Fae series given to me but it was missing the 3rd one so I haven't started reading it, if I ever come across it real cheap I may buy it and read them. Other than those I have 8 books that are unread and they were all gifts by other people not picked out by me.

Spend a couple years in the military, and Catch 22 will make complete sense. You have to understand how an authority can say, in complete seriousness, things like: "Since you're using your pass, you're abusing it, so I'm taking it away from you. But if you don't use it, you can have it back."

I share your "I'll get to them someday" philosophy...maybe one day I will actually feel like reading that book I bought with the interesting cover...one day

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) I stopped counting the unread but hungrily purchased hardcover books several years ago. Now I'm doing it to my Kindle. I hope the Kindle's memory is expanded in the next version.

You should realllllly read the Great Gatbsy and a Time Travellers wife! Like RIGHT NOW. Wuthering Heights you have to be in the mood for, and I quit Atonement after reading the fifth second exactly

I'll take that advice, Gorfo. Right after Lord of the Flies, I'll pick The Great Gatsby. I'll hold off on Time Travelers Wife for a while, I just read Before Ever After. Some says both books almost have the same plot.

Ya also if you've recently read a tear jerker like don't read The Time Traveler's Wife right after...

You have more will power than me. I can't pass up a good book regardless of how many unread books I earned. I think I have a fear of running out of new books to read. Yes that's the excuse I'm going to use to explain my book addiction. Lol.

Anna Karenina was on that list for me, but I just started reading it, and it reads surprisingly easily...I started it because I saw a trailer for the movie (which has Jude Law and Keira Knightley)! It's coming out in September and I thought it would be good to have read it beforehand :)

Melissa I have 4 stacks almost waist high in my bedroom of books that my stepson gave me that he bought in an auction, 3 books I actually bought that I wanted to read and 2 books I won from the goodreads giveaway to read. I have been getting involved in group reads and challenges and which has helped make the stacks in my room lower.

It is exciting to go into a book shop and explore, not knowing what you are going to find. You learn lots like that, and always end up with tons of books "waiting to be read". As I am an English speaker living in France, let me loose in a good book shop in England and I "stock up". Not that I don't enjoy reading in French - I am just slower and get frustrated when I have to ask things.
On my bookshelf, waiting, are January's read of the month (late, as always) : Beautiful Creatures. I also have "The sorceress" from the Nicholas Flamel series, "Moo" by Jane Smiley, "Introduction aux Mysteres" by Misha Gromov (non fiction) and "El misterio de la cripta embrujada", by Eduardo Mendoza. But will I read them in that order? Almost certainly not, as I am already tempted by things that others are reading!

I guess it is the mystery of the bewitched crypt, or some such......found it in the local bookshop. Didn't read any, so don't know what it is about.

message 84: by Ebony (new)

Ebony (poppyy) I currently have these books to finish

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
Eona (Eon, #2) by Alison Goodman
A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3) by George R.R. Martin
The Name of This Book Is Secret (Secret, #1) by Pseudonymous Bosch
God Is in the Small Stuff... And It All Matters by Bruce Bickel
Subject Seven (Subject Seven, #1) by James A. Moore
Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1) by Moira Young

There are alot more but those are the ones I can remember. I just keep buying! I couldn't tell you the amount of Kindle books I have unread!

@Kathy Is the Garden of Good and Evil a huge book?

message 85: by ☼Marian☼ (new)

☼Marian☼ (mgdc) | 233 comments I decided not to count the number of my unread books. I came to realize that everything has its own time. I don't want to just read it for the sake of lessening the number of unread stuff.
I look at my unread books and talk to them telepathically, and say, "Don't worry. Your time will come someday. Be patient". Then I pick up a new book. If my books were alive, they would've slap the hell out of me.

I liked Eona, it was a really quick read!

I have over 50 unread books on my bookshelf. Some I keep because they are classics, some I keep for the brilliant covers.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I am kind of ashamed to say that the majority of my bookshelves are unread. :( I can't pass a bookstore or yard sale without glancing at the titles available, and I usually go home with two or three more books to add to my collection.

message 89: by Dorottya (new)

Dorottya (dorottya_b) | 22 comments I am not going to even put here my unread books, because the post would be a km long :D. I like buying books, but then I give so many yearly challenges to myself that I always use audiobooks and shorter ebooks to be able to reach them... but this year it is going to be different - the motto is "TBR takedown", and I set a lower nr. to books to read this year, but 75% of those should come from my shelves. And I am a bookish nobuy this year, too.
