Okay, I was with you until the book burning. This isn't Fahrenheit 451. Liking anything is subjective. Tastes change. Twilight is hardly the only popular poorly written young adult novel out there. I can think of another series that is poorly written and is nearly as popular.
I think the reason so many people are fans of these books is actually pretty simple. Most people don't want to think. They read for the enjoyment of it. On the surface, twilight is a fun story. It only gets really creepy when you start looking past the surface. If you go deeper into the context and actions of the characters, their motivations and desires.
Some people when they read can't avoid seeing the deeper issues, other people take it at its surface value. It's sweet and attractive rather than creepy and repulsive because that's what the book wants you to see.
My issues with Twilight.
Weak first-person pov, Terrible characterizations, poorly written passages, the over use of certain descriptions. I have an issue with the way it was actually written.
I think every once in a while you have to read a truly terrible book, or you forget what it is that makes fantastic literature.

When the love of Hermione's life left her, she continued searching for horcruxes to destroy the Dark Lord.
But when the love of Bella's life left her, she curled up into a ball and didn't speak for months. And then, she jumped off a cliff.

When the love of Hermione's life left her, she continued searching for horcru..."
This is true, but it's not a fair comparison. Hermione has a sense of duty, and while Ron might be the one she loves romantically, she promised Harry she'd be there for him, and Hermione isn't one to break a promise. Nor is she one to turn her back and allow someone else to face danger unaided.
Bella is pathetic, there is no doubt, but considering she'd spent the prior school year basically in the thrall of vampires (She even mentions the whole dazzling her thing.) I think it's safe to assume that her extreme response should have been more proof that Edward and his ilk were dangerous. I mean I have always kind of wondered if everything in twilight that Bella does that seems so weak and stupid isn't just her being in the thrall of a boy who believes that females are meant to behave like that.
