Violence in general doesn't bother me. Hunger Games is one of my favorite series ever. But I thought things with Gone were too black and white and that the characters were either bad or good for the most part with no real explanation of why. There's no explanation for how some of the kids go from snobs to completely sadistic and to me it's a very unrealistic jump to make.Gone just didn't sit with me right because I felt the violence was a little gratuitous and they just wanted to push the envelope with certain violent elements (that I don't want to mention because they would constitute spoilers but if you've read the book you'll probably get my drift). The concept of the novel is really interesting, but it just isn't done that well. There are too many great books that I haven't read to continue the series until I'm desperate and the library has nothing else.
I agree Bluemoon. Orc was the same way. With the exception of Drake, I thought all the characters showed both good and bad tendencies. Characters I thought were good flipped on me, and characters I wrote off ended up being influential and endearing.I also thought that under the violence the battle on how to create order, whether it should be a socialist society or capitalist. There was alot more to them then just the cover story, I thought.
But there are always those books that people just see from different aspects, it's what makes debating them so fun.
Amanda I will be done with the audio of Lover Avenged on my trip to see you tomorrow(jk), but I am headed to MN. I am loving this one and am excited for Lover Mine (I already got the audio for it). I put a hold on Anna at my library, but only one library in my whole circuit has it, so who knows how long that will take! I was going to see if I could get it for my Nook, but my Nook is not working out for me yet. Perhaps after the holidays!

I thought Gone was just okay. It wasn't the violence or anything, I just didn't really enjoy it as much as I wanted to. It is my opinion that there are many better dystopian novels around if that is what you are looking for, and not nearly as wordy and long. Also I wasn't interested enough to continue on with the series. There are far too many other books in existence for me to spend time on sub-par plots (especially when each book is 700 pages long)

I just finished Lover Revealed and my county's inter library loan department is doing some inventory check so they wont be up and running until Jan 16th. I have to wait until then to listen to the rest, our local library does have the BDB on audio. Where are you headed to in MN? We r getting a bunch of snow again tonight. *Sighs deeply*
Heidi I wrote: "Amanda I will be done with the audio of Lover Avenged on my trip to see you tomorrow(jk), but I am headed to MN. I think I might try Lover Mine on audio for a change.
I am just now starting
. I am interested-- it looks very good! I also just finished
, but I have mixed feelings about it. It wasn't AS good as some I've read, but it wasn't "Bad" either. My rating on it was about a 3.5, mostly because i had to force myself through much of the book... the whole middle section just moved entirely too slow for my tastes. Can't wait for Revolution, though. The concept looks great!
The last two weeks has been crazy for me but I am now starting
and am super excited about it. I will not get to devote all my attention to it until Sunday but I want to start it anyways.
I should get back to reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. When I do get back to it, I'm on the book about the cop, I can't think of the name of it.We got hit with snow here last night as well, about 7 inches in my area of lovely Iowa. You'd think as much as I can't stand winter, I'd move away in the winter time, but nope here I am. HA!.
To be honest, if it weren't for my 4 year old son I wouldn't be very excited about Christmas at all. I miss having the time to curl up for hours on end with a good book. (THAT would be a great gift for me actually - the time to read!)Anyhow, I hope everyone has a great holiday and a Merry Christmas!
Best to all.

Lover Releavedd, the book about Butch. It was my least favorite book. I just finished it on audio actually and I liked it better the second time I read it.
My least favorite BDB book was Phury's. If it hadn't been for everything with John, Qhuinn, Blay and Rehv I would have absolutely written it off.
Carmel wrote: "It's Xmas morning here in Australia, so wishing you all a Merry Xmas & a happy & safe New Year:)"Right back at you!
Amanda- I started reading the one about Butch and was just so turned off by it, but hoping to get back to the series in the new year, just to say I finished them, I hate not finishing a series.Heidi I- I'm glad you got to MN safely. I'm over in Iowa, and we got pounded on Thursday night with about 7 inches of snow, and then probably another 1-2 inches on Friday.
Lloyd- I wish I could sit and read all day with no interruptions, but alas, can't do that with a household to run.
Merry Christmas to you all.
The end of Butch's book is good, it just seemed so slow in the beginging compared to the rest of the books. Phury's book was also soooo slow, but I cried at the end. Phury's book was so sad.
I'm on page 555 of
.Not sure what to read next? Suggestions?
I also got a Nook Color. (Ha! Like I have any clue how to work it.)
So Gregor the Overlander is very temporarily on hold. I got a Kindle for Christmas and I've taken on the task of downloading the free books I can find. And of course it needed testing so I'm currently reading
but plan to get back to my library book before finishing it. I just need to play with my new toy first.(Kinda funnily, I also got a lot of paper copies of books. Though my mom said she felt odd buying them since she knew I was getting a kindle).
Kourtni- I really enjoyed Little Brother. I hope you're still enjoying it. I'm about to begin When You Reach Me; I haven't read it yet because I tend to lean towards older YA, but I've heard so many good things that I couldn't resist.
Finally finished Gregor the Overlander and FINALLY starting
which I've had from the library for a couple weeks but wouldn't start until I finished Gregor. (I did like Gregor there have just been a lot of distractions lately--and I've been in a knitting mood)
Anna wrote: "Getting ready to startThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian"That book is fantastic on audio!
I'm going to listen to my very first audio book, it's
, but I don't believe it's a YA book, but listening to it anyways. I've been wanting to read/listen to it for awhile and just now got it through my library.
Cassi wrote: "Anna wrote: "Getting ready to startThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian"That book is fantastic on audio!"
I completely agree! It is one of the best audio books out there. Alexie's voice rocks the book!
I'm on vacation, so I'm getting through the books pretty quickly. I just finished
,
, and
. I know The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake isn't YA, but it sure could be. I think a YA reader would be well equiped to understand the subtlies of it.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Happy holidays from Florida :)Starting Strange Angels right now
So I finished
then immediately bought
on my Kindle. Clicking that "buy" button is quick and a little too easy of a way to spend money. But there is instant gratification without leaving your house....
Looks like Goodreads had a glitch, lol.Cassi, I was laughing at how easy it was to buy books on my Kindle too. On Thursday at work it was so slow that before I knew it I bought 3 books. That little 'buy' button just calls your name.
Oops. It may also be a my internet malfunctioning thing (because it does that all the time) and me re-clicking when it didn't post originally (only it had posted and just didn't show up). Well better get rid of a couple of those....It doesn't even ask "are you sure you want to buy this book" just click and bought. Scarily easy!
I know! When I order from Amazon it asks if I'm sure, and I need to click the credit card I want to put it on and the shipping address. Plenty of time to change my mind. Not on the kindle though.
I just finished
which was good. I am going to try
again. I love Melina Marchetta but I just don't like historical type fiction. I'm going to give it my best!
It's actually more of a Fantasy then historical fiction, but yeah some people have a hard time getting into them.

I, also, hated MATCHED and spent a bit this morning stewing with a friend over why & how it was so awful. We haven't yet been able to figure out how it was allowed on the shelves in it's current state. Just. Awful.

I can see how an ereader might be a nice thing. I probably would have bought a Kindle by now if the books themselves weren't still so overpriced. I run across some great deals now and then though, and can see the time (once publishers stop being so damned greedy) when I could live with owning one.
The prices are similar to paperbacks--which does seem a little much except I would be spending just as much on them if I bought them the old fashion way and I've run out of shelf space and my room is too cluttered as it is. Maybe if I had more space that would be something that would bother me more. It helps that there are loads of free books (classics) and that kind of balances everything out in my mind.
Cassi wrote: "The prices are similar to paperbacks--which does seem a little much except I would be spending just as much on them if I bought them the old fashion way and I've run out of shelf space and my room ..."Most are similar to paperbacks. Some are still just...crazy. It just seems that (older books especially) should be priced around $5. They would sell more. New hardcovers I can see being $14.99 or whatever. I just think there needs to be a little bit of sanity there. Some are priced even HIGHER than the paper version.
With my 4+ year old (and moving too much), I'm with you about a HUGE draw being the nice, tiny storage for these. If they would offer me something to turn in all my books for Kindle versions...I'd be there! :P
Reading the Hunger games trilogy. It's amazing. Got given the trilogy on christmas morning and have just finished the 2nd book today.
My thing about my Kindle is that I don't truly own the book. It's like I'm paying 6-12 dollars for the right to just read it and store the file. If my Kindle crashes, or Amazon crashes, my back up is gone and I no longer have the book (or the words, lol, since it's not actually a book). Still, for me it's that there are so many books out there that I want to read but I have a feeling that I probabaly wouldn't reread them, so I don't want them taking up space on my bookshelf. These are the books that I get on Kindle. For instance, I wish I had gotten the Mortal Instrument series on my Kindle. I won't ever reread it.
And as far as price. They are generally cheaper then the book, but not by much. I paid 7.20ish for a book that is 8.95 in paperback. I feel like it's generally like this... if the book is printed in Hardcover the e-version is anywhere from 10-13 dollars. If the book is now in paperback, the e-version is like 6-8 dollars.
I'm with Cassi, it's all about the space saver. I'm not good at borrowing from libraries. I am terrible about returning and reading them in a time-frame. So this was a good option for me.
I felt much safer about the crashing issue when I realized Amazon archives the files and you can re-download them. Amazon is like the Walmart of the Internet, I expect it to stick around. So as long as there is Amazon I have my books...even if I need a new device for them.I do use my library but sometimes they don't have the books I want to read yet or don't have the sequels to books that they have. Maybe I'm impatient but when this is the case I buy the books except I don't have anywhere to put the books anymore.
Plus books gather a lot of dust and I have very very mild allergy induced asthma and I'm tired of dusting my books.
I did know that about Amazon. I guess it's just my dis-trust of anything electronic or through the web. I just feel like I don't really have it unless I have it.That's why I am picking series that I think will be one-reads. I'm reading the Iron Fey series right now and I'm so glad it's on my Kindle. Im not sure how much I like it yet.
