message 1901: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I think Lament was another book that sacrificed character and story development for action, or in this book's case, the anxiety of almost getting some action, then getting interrupted. Honestly, I think I kept reading because I was wondering if they were ever going to go anywhere with their romance. Like I said, disappointed. I liked Shiver and I really like Maggie as an author. Lament's storyline was great, but what you actually saw...choppy. And Dee bought into the fairy world WAY too quickly. If she was going to get into it that quickly, she needed to have some history of talking about it with her Gran or something. She didn't seem like a stupid girl, but I thought most of the book she certainly acted like one. I'm interested in Ballad now because I thought James was one of the more interesting/better developed characters.

message 1902: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Elaine I would skip Lament if you did not like Shiver. I did not like Lament very much due to the above reasons listed by Becca.

message 1903: by Lani (new)

Lani (crahfty) | 253 comments Becca, I'm currently reading Ballad and actually like it a lot better than Lament. I think it's because I didn't care for Dee that much (and like her character less in Ballad) and I thought James was more interesting. I still have a bit to go though, so I'm staying cautiously optimistic. *fingers crossed*

BTW-I loved Shiver but think Lament and Ballad have been so-so. But I'm a sucker for romantic tension.

message 1904: by Traci (new)

Traci I'm happy to see that people feel the same way about Lament as I did. I finished it this afternoon and I was left empty. When I began reading it I felt like maybe there was a book I missed. I agree with Becca that it was all WAY too easy. I couldn't believe it. It almost reminded me of Need when the main character (I don't even remember her name because I was disappointed in that book as well) found out about pixies and was all "oh, okay. whatevs."

I found it hard to believe that her mom/gran hadn't warned her about faeries while she was growing up. I don't know.. it was all rushed and ill-explained. I'll read Ballad eventually but it won't be at the top of my list.

ANYWAY! going to start Girls' Poker Night A Novel of High Stakes by Jill A. Davis . It's not YA but I'm in the mood for some chick-lit ;]

message 1905: by Dija (new)

Dija Currently reading At Grave's End (Night Huntress, #3) by Jeaniene Frost Man, it's a really good thing I love Cat or I would have some issues with this series. XD

message 1906: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments traci - Girls Poker Night is hilarious. I love Jill A Davis, her other book Ask Again Later is super quirky-funny too.

message 1907: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Just started listening to Bloody Jack (Bloody Jack, #1) by L.A. Meyer on audio.

message 1908: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Murphy | 96 comments I spent the morning reading The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella online. I was pleasantly surprised. On the website Meyer says that as she was writing Bree's story she began to wish that Eclipse had ended slightly differently. I have to say I agree with her.

message 1909: by Heather (new)

Heather | 166 comments Emily, thanks for the input. Will have the library check her out and see if they can order it.

Elaine (elainereads) | 22 comments Bluemoon wrote: "right now I have put Unwind by Neal Shusterman on hold and going to read Sabriel by Garth Nix.

Is that his real name? Garth Nix?"

According to a citation for

Across the Wall: A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories, he states that it is his real name.

message 1911: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Murphy | 96 comments bluemoon--I really like Sabriel and its sequels. I FINALLY finished Lady Friday (another Nix title). I liked it, too. I listened to half of it on audio and when I couldn't get into it I went to the book form. Wouldn't recommend that. It made the book seem to move a little too fast.

message 1912: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Bluemoon I gave up on Sabriel after my 3rd attempt at it, I hope you fare better. Mandi - I see you switched to audio so you must have had the same issues I had. My libraries don't have the audio :(

message 1913: by Heidi (last edited Jun 08, 2010 04:52PM) (new)

Heidi Just finished the 4th Georgia Nicholson book (loved it) and am now starting to listen to The Year Of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty on audiobook. I love the narrators Australian accents :)

message 1914: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Oh brother! Peep also said she had to switch to audiobook version too because she couldn't get into the print version, so it wasn't just me. Give it a try, I have been known to be outnumbered about my thoughts on books (A LOT)!

message 1915: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) My library copy expired because I only checked it out for 7 days. I went back and noticed that they added a ton of juvenile to young adult titles. They even have Fairest on audio! And nope, I don't care if other people hated it, I loved it. And the audio is awesome! It's a light book and I liked it!

message 1916: by Lani (new)

Lani (crahfty) | 253 comments I'm currently reading Spells. I'm only one chapter in so I don't really have any analysis yet...

I really enjoyed Spells, it starts 6months after Wings ended. I like how the love triangle is not dragged out, and the plot is new not a rehashing of the previous book.

That's good to hear because so far, I'm not that impressed, but it's still early in the book. I'm a big romance fan and I was disappointed with how the book just jumped into solely focusing on Laurel with little mention of Tamani or especially David. I also wish I would have re-read Wings. It's been so long since I read it that I forgot a lot of it and Spells doesn't rehash a lot.

BUT like I said it's still very early in the book for me and it's keeping my interest-so I'm holding out hope.

message 1925: by Heather (new)

Heather | 166 comments Finished A Drop of Crimson and started The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan.

message 1926: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Just finished The Crimson Thread A Retelling of "Rumpelstiltskin" by Suzanne Weyn . Not a bad little story although not at all what I was expecting. I'm about to start David Copperfield and Juliet Dove, Queen of Love.

okay keep going, I think I know where you are, and don't want to spoil it. Tam will show up soon and David makes quite a few appearances. We NEED to discuss the ending though : )

message 1929: by Lani (new)

Lani (crahfty) | 253 comments I'm close to the end Teresa! I know who I want her to choose, but don't know if she will. To let you know where I'm at-she just got the note on the rock and picked up David. Hopefully I'll finish it during my lunch break!

Kourtni (kourkyloo) | 602 comments Heather wrote: "Finished A Drop of Crimson and started The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan."

Heather let me know what you think of The Red Pyramid! It's on my bookshelf at home and I haven't heard much about it yet.

message 1931: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Has anyone here read or heard anything about North of Beautiful? It's up for my next read. Even though it's got good reviews here, I keep hearing bad about it.

message 1932: by Lani (new)

Lani (crahfty) | 253 comments Peep I just read it last week and loved it! I loved the unique characters. I didn't always follow the mapping references, but overall I think I gave it four stars.

message 1933: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I am currently reading The Mysterious Benedict Society after recently finishing up the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series. I'd never heard of the book and decided to try it out on a whim. So far I am enjoying it. It has a Roald Dahl feel to it.

Heidi Peep wrote: "Has anyone here read or heard anything about North of Beautiful? It's up for my next read. Even though it's got good reviews here, I keep hearing bad about it."

I have it on hold for me at the library.

message 1935: by Mirza (new)

Mirza (mirzaarhasan) I was thinking of starting the Vampire Academy next. Is it any good? I just heard of this series here on Goodreads.

Its a little hard for me, living so far away from the mainstream readers. I dont get any news about recent releases at all, except from here !!

Goodreads rock !!

message 1936: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments i really like the Vampire Academy series but i think it is a hit or miss for most. I loved the main character Rose, and the pace of the books. If you like vamp books you will probably like it.

LOL I gave up sleep to finish this book. Who do you want her to choose? I knew it would get better after she got back from where she went.

message 1938: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Murphy | 96 comments I just finished Elsewhere. It was okay, and at times pretty interesting. But I didn't love it. I'm doing Incarceron on audio now and reading Disney After Dark because my boys love it.

I'm about to start that and Perfect Chemistry. I know the video was ridiculous for that, I thought so myself, but the book is supposed to be well written. I'm not sure which other books to pursue...any ideas?

message 1945: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Alyssa what type of books do you like? Romance, action??? Some of my recent favorites have been Hunger Games/Catching Fire, Graceling, and Sloppy Firsts.

I want her to choose Tamani. I finished the book yesterday. We definately need to talk about the ending. What in the world?!

message 1949: by Traci (new)

Traci Finished Darkfever last night.. I really liked it. However, I'm not a fan of how Mac tells you what's going to happen before it does. It's like reading spoilers but they're in the book! >.< Going to start Bloodfever soon. I don't know if I'll have time today because my cousin's getting married :]

message 1950: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Ha Traci! Peep and I constantly complain about HOW MUCH Mac talks (yadda yadda yadda). She drives me nuts, but I can't stop reading them!
