What age appropriate is this for? I think my 12 year old/6th grade daughter would love this ....

I finished Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer and moved on to the audio of #2 The Dead and the Gone (Last Survivors, #2) by Susan Beth Pfeffer

I am still reading Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy, #6) by Richelle Mead but also started Ready Player One by Ernest Cline which I am loving!

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Hmmm, it's really violent Regina. I'm not sure where you stand on that, but it's very very violent and gory. There's no sex, but there's sex discussion. Other then those two things I bet she'd like it.

Wendy that is really helpful. It sounds too mature for her now. Good news is, she can read it in a few years and she has plenty to read in the interim. :)

Stephen (havan) | 5 comments Regarding Gone and violence and sex...

I've never been a good one to ask about what's suitable for children of various ages.

As to SEX... This book is pretty chaste. If one's worried about sexual situations, the kids in the story are no older than 14 and the furthest that it goes is a kiss. The protagonist, Sam even mentions about being pressured/encouraged by his mom into his first date, (it was ok but big deal to him) but now he's kinda crushing on Astrid (the Genius)

As to violence... It is disturbing and violent, but not really gory. Some children die. Sam, the main protagonist kills the first little girl accidentally, when she panics and tries to kill him. A bully also hits a girl with a baseball bat and she later dies. However, unlike the violence that kids see everyday on TV, most of the killers here feel guilty about it and are clearly remorseful over what they have done. There is even a scene where Quinn, the protagonist's best friend is up in a tower with an automatic weapon but he can't bring himself to shoot the villains. Sam, not only understands but is glad in a way that his buddy can't do it.

As to language... It's pretty tame.

I'm pretty sure that this book is NOT appropriate for younger children. As I said in my review of the second book in this series The book is riveting but may be too intense for younger audiences. Say anyone under 78... It's sort of a stealthy Lord of the Flies as told by Stephen King with a generous dollop of the X-Men thrown in.

I know that this book is disturbing. It's kinda meant to be. It raises issues about right and wrong and civilized behavior in a way that I felt bothered me as a thinking adult. Sheltering kids to a point is a good thing. But part of preparing them for the real world is getting them to think about these issues when they've matured a bit. Heck, the third volume in this series even challenges one's views on capitolism vs. Communism in a stealthy way that's more thought provoking than anything I ever read in college.

message 11710: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Hey, I loved the books. I think maybe it's all in the level of gore were used to. They're loads of fun, for say 15 and up, just my opinion.

As to whether or not they're gory. We'll have to agree to disagree. The only difference between the book and a horror movie are that they are words and not an image on a screen. I mean, some of the scenes I read are completely violent, such as the (view spoiler) or how about when the (view spoiler). Plus, (view spoiler). I could go on... Like how about what happened to Britney.

Don't get me wrong, there's definitely the added pain and anguish that all these violent deaths cause, and Sam struggles with his decisions the whole time because of it, but the level of violence/gore is still there.

As to the sex, yeah, they're relatively chaste. Sam and Astrid (view spoiler).

message 11711: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Thank you Stephen and Wendy! I am pretty relaxed about violence and real world issues (poverty, government, etc.) We are the type of family that has real world and political discussions alot. My kids often watch documentaries with us. My issue really centers around avoiding sexualizing my kids before they are ready. Sex is a normal part of life and I want my kids to approach it in a healthy and normal way, when they are ready -- and I feel like I have a good pulse point on them right now. My daughter is not there yet for sex at all, despite the fact that she is 12. Maybe next year, maybe not. I will have to see where she is. A discussion about having sex in a book she is reading is beyond her maturity right now, she isn't ready for it. Which is fine, because as it is right now, she reads about 2 books a week in addition to her school work, piano, saxophone and sports. I made the same decision as to the book Unwind, if it weren't for the scene (view spoiler) I would have allowed her to read it. But (view spoiler). The books she is reading are mostly dystopia anyway or address issues of poverty and racism, or are fantasy. Just the stuff she is in to. So I think she has a good exposure right now.

Thanks so much everyone! I am definitely putting down Gone as a future book that I can read along with her. I look forward to it. :)

Stephen (havan) | 5 comments Wendy F wrote: "Hey, I loved the (Gone) books. I think maybe it's all in the level of gore were used to. ..."

That's the truth. I guess its a question of perception and how our imagination functions. The gore CAN be very graphic if imagined by someone who dwells on it. I guess that I tended to gloss over that and think about the bigger issues presented. Plus all of what you mention happens in the second book in the series. Which I'll grant IS definately more gory than the first.

message 11713: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) The 2nd book was more Gory then the first, you're so right.

I liked the deeper issues too. I love how it plays with different types of societies and how they want to build it, like the subtle discussions on capitalism and socialism.

I also really like how Grant is showing what all this pressure is doing to Sam and and anyone who takes the mantle of leadership.

Regardless it's one of the better series I read because no matter how long it's been since I read it I can't help but get pulled back into discussions about it. I'm really excited for Fear.

Regina, I'll be really curious to see what you think of it. The characters aren't all black and white (with a few exceptions), they all do crappy things and they all do heroic things. I'm honestly not sure where I think you'll come down on this one.

I have been wondering if anyone would like to have a group to discuss the issues raised in Gone in a semi adult setting. There is a GONE group but it's very juvenile.

Regina (reginar) I would love to. I just put myself on the wait list for my library, but it is short (I am #4).

Arphaxad | 335 comments Have finished reading Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park and The Alloy of Law (Mistborn, #4) by Brandon Sanderson , which were pretty awesome - especially the latter :D

Am now in the middle of Sweet Venom (Medusa Girls #1) by Tera Lynn Childs , though it may get abandoned in favour of Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare , which I just bought in a fit of glee (how is it out already? I thought it wasn't released until the 6th!)

message 11719: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I didn't enjoy Gone. Thought the characters were undeveloped and the violence was gratuitous at times. Violence doesn't bother me (give me a war movie over a chick flick any day) but I like it to serve a bigger purpose other than to try to one-up everything else out there.

Not trying to argue, just wanted to give you a different opinion. I don't think it's inappropriate. I just didn't think it was particularly good...especially when the dystopian genre has so much better product to offer.

message 11720: by Tamara (last edited Dec 01, 2011 06:10PM) (new)

There's more action the further you get into the series. It's a bit like Harry Potter, each book is a little more intense than the next. Not quite to the extent of HP, but then PJ is for a bit of a younger target audience. But, they're wonderful books. I'm sure you'll enjoy them:)

Tina ♥ Bookaholic (martinabookaholic) Thanks for the information, so I keep on tracking this series. :)
But I've also heard that after this 5 book in which PJ is about 12 yrs old, that there is also a new series in which he's already about 16 and it is more YA and also with romance. Do you know what I mean? I don't know the name right now^^

YES!!! The first book is The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus #1) by Rick Riordan and the second one just came out, The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2) by Rick Riordan

They are awesome! A lot of PJ fans were really nervous about the spin off series thinking that it wouldn't live up to the expectations, but I absolutely loved the new series and I haven't read any negative reviews. Most people were really happy. It has new characters and Percy's really not even in the first book. But even so, it was still really, really good! Definitely read it after you finish the first series :)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments For the past week I have had a hankering to re-read The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins . Was very distracting during the last book I read.

But having read it all before I keep wanting to get all sentimental and emotional way prematurely. (Like page 32 premature) Then again, work has been stressful this week so maybe it's that.

(Normally I don't read books before movies. But I wanted to re0read it entirely unrelated to the movie & it seemed silly not to)
