Jason Kurtz (jasongkurtz) I just finished Matched and I'm about 100 pages into The Magician King. I know maybe that is not technically YA, but The Magicians was up for an Alex Award (best YA/Crossover Novel). I also picked up The Isle of Blood which I am drooling to read!

Positively was kind of an interesting book. It's not my favorite that I've ever read (not even my favorite on the subject of HIV/AIDS) but it was still a not-terrible read.

I LOVED the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett. They're set in his Discworld setting (he has like 40 books set there) and they are HILARIOUS, sweet, and feature an awesome female witch protagonist. They are, in order:

The Wee Free Men (Tiffany Aching, #1; Discworld, #30) by Terry Pratchett A Hat Full of Sky (Tiffany Aching, #2; Discworld, #32) by Terry Pratchett Wintersmith (Tiffany Aching, #3; Discworld, #35) by Terry Pratchett I Shall Wear Midnight (Discworld, #38) by Terry Pratchett

Seriously, they are some of my favorite YA books I've ever read. They're not quite in the usual Armstrong vein (I haven't read any of her YA but I've read some of the Women of the Otherworld series.) These are a lot lighter fare, and sometimes have an almost absurdist bent, but they are laugh-out-loud funny...and they might make you want to pick up more Pratchett :P

However, I did just add The 47th Samurai (Bob Lee Swagger, #4) by Stephen Hunter to the list to try and regain some testosterone in my system. A nice adult action book might just be in order! Guns, bullets, swords, death and explosions. Enough to make a "real" man proud. :P

message 11018: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cawils_99) I just finished Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast and it was ok so I guess I will try the next book in the series. Now I'm starting Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore , I hope it's as good as everyone says.

I'm in the same boat! Right now I have going:

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez My Horizontal Life A Collection of One-Night Stands by Chelsea Handler I'm Just Here for the Food Food + Heat = Cooking by Alton Brown

and I've finished a couple YA books while hacking away at these three. It's not that any of them are bad...I just feel like I only want them in small doses, lol. I might be fickle again tonight and start another YA book instead of working on these...

I've always wanted to read a Discworld Terry Pratchett book, would that series be a good place to start or do I need to know more about the world to understand them?

Bridget (mahvelousmeat) | 24 comments Ash wrote: "I've always wanted to read a Discworld Terry Pratchett book, would that series be a good place to start or do I need to know more about the world to understand them?"

I think you'd be okay starting with the first Tiffany Aching book! They're rather self-enclosed as compared to some of the others, and you don't really need to know much about the city, the other races, the politics and whatnot to get it. Also, Pratchett is really good about making sure to give you enough information about what's going on so that you understand, even if it's your first Discworld book. For what it's worth, the first Pratchett book I read was Small Gods, which gave a nice overview of the world and really set the tone for the other Discworld books I have giggled my way through :P I think either Small Gods or Wee Free Men would be a fine place to start dipping your toes in the Discworld waters. I hope you like them! :D

Anna Heidi (so what if I'm picky): Oh, yay! :D That's suprising. It's like every person you talk to is in love with him and I just don't get it.

Isamlq: How are you liking that book? I really liked 'The Adoration of Jenna Fox' so I'm torn as to whether I should read that one.

marie: I love witch books! I love any books with magic in them. :D

Bridget: I'm going to have to check out the Tiffany Aching series. I've never read anything by Terry Pratchett but I've heard he's quite funny.

message 11038: by Anna (last edited Sep 23, 2011 11:25PM) (new)

Anna Martina: Hahahaha! Ah, damn. If she's even more annoying in the second book I don't know if I want to read it. I really liked the world building, even though it's ripped straight out of the movie 'Labrynth', with bits of 'Alice in Wonderland' thrown in for good measure. I'll probably give it a read and hope the characters grow on me or something.

message 11039: by Tina ♥ Bookaholic (new)

Tina ♥ Bookaholic (martinabookaholic) oh, you haven't read the second book yet? sorry if I ruined it now :/
But yes, in this book even I got annoyed with her sometimes. Guess in this there will be some parts where you'll roll your eyes, but there are also other parts they are great and gorgeous. :)
I start the third one today - I was never god with reading just one book of a series... I always go on with the next... otherwise my curiousity would kill me *muhaha* :D

No, that's okay, I pretty much already know how it ends anyway. I like to read reviews. :P

Meh, if I really dislike a first book, I probably won't check out a second one. I figure there are too many books out there that I want to be reading. :)

message 11041: by Tina ♥ Bookaholic (new)

Tina ♥ Bookaholic (martinabookaholic) in this point I could learn something from you, because I always go on with the books in series, because you never know how it turns out in the end. Like the Fever series - If i would have stopped after the second book I wouldn't know the fourth and the fifth one which I love and adore.
ON the ohterside - if I would have stopped after the first Immortals book I would have saved many nerves *lol*

I didn't really liked the first book, so I didn't bother for the rest of the series and I decided why not give her spin-off a try? Um, I'm not really enjoying it. I hate books written in one-person. Speaker for the Dead (Ender's Saga, #2) by Orson Scott Card is certainly very unlike Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1) by Orson Scott Card , but I loved it too, in a different way. Orson Scott Card's characters are just so awesome.

Beth, have you read the Shadow series, starting with Ender's Shadow (Shadow Series, #1) by Orson Scott Card ? Those are really excellent, and much more similar to Ender's Game. I usually recommend them to people as the next thing to read if they're looking for more Game-like action :)
