Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments For working at a church he's pretty chillax (at least he was during college & still is via email). I haven't listened to that so it's hard to suggest a book I don't know.

I was almost worried that Smekday sets the bar too high. Its very very very very very very good. I'm glad the book I had after it is Jacky Faber because I don't think many things could follow it.

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Go to audible or some other site and check out a clip of it, it's hilarious! You have to. And you're right about Smkeday. Maybe keep that as your secret weapon?

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Have any of the boys in this group listened to Jacky? LLOYD WHERE ARE YOU???

I'll find something to intro him to audiobooks. I was going to send him a box of Girl Scout cookies (long story, for being a good friend is basically the summary) and had looked for an audiobook to include but I think I'll hold it off for another occasion until I decide what's perfect.

message 8154: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I think Jacky is universal. I always tell people to start with Harry Potter on audio if they are new the medium.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Heidi (the original) wrote: "I think Jacky is universal. I always tell people to start with Harry Potter on audio if they are new the medium."

But I want him to read something NEW & EXCITING. And um...don't kill me but I haven't listened to the Harry Potter audiobooks myself. It's on my list that I want to listen to someday but there are so many books in the world!

message 8156: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I will look through my list and get back to you then. :)

message 8157: by Heidi (new)

Heidi How about Book Thief Cassi??

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Heidi (the original) wrote: "How about Book Thief Cassi??"

Did I listen to that? I don't remember. Just went and checked. Did not listen to that but read actual book. But I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak could be a valid boy friendly option.

message 8159: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I Am the Messenger is excellent on audio. I have a crush on the narrator.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Heidi (the original) wrote: "I Am the Messenger is excellent on audio. I have a crush on the narrator."

I liked it on audio as well! I think this may find its way to Texas sometime.

I love buying people books as presents. I don't even know why but its so much more fun than other presents.

message 8161: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Sharing book love is one of the best things in life. I wish I had more readers in my life to share them with!

message 8162: by Daria (new)

Daria (dariadeptula) Books are just about the only presents I give people (mostly because I have so many to spare).

message 8170: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments The real question should be, what am I NOT reading. (Gotta get this Kindle thing under control. FOCUS!) :P

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Lloyd wrote: "The real question should be, what am I NOT reading. (Gotta get this Kindle thing under control. FOCUS!) :P"

A kindle might not be a good choice for someone with a self-control problem....lol.

I stay pretty frugal with mine. Thankfully my library has a lot of books I want to read.

message 8172: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Normally it's not so bad, but I did get a little carried away. I'm trying to keep it to three or so books at a time. I could probably stop getting books for a year or so.

Except...I have pre-ordered The Throne of Fire (Kane Chronicles, #2) by Rick Riordan which will download at midnight on 5/3! :D

That should do it until July. Unless something else sneaks up on me. :)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Lloyd you need to better use the TBR pile on goodreads. That's what keeps my self control checked. Because I have the list to help me remember & that stops "I must buy this now lest I forget" which used to be a problem I had.

I just checked your books and you haven't read Jacky Faber! DARN! I really want a male perspective on that books.

SPEAKING OF JACKY FABER.

I just blushed and laughed out loud during Mississippi Jack Being an Account of the Further Waterborne Adventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman, Fine Lady, and Lily of the West (Bloody Jack, #5) by L.A. Meyer when Jaimy was talking about some of his intentions towards Jacky once he found her. Fit of giggles!

message 8174: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I AM interested in reading it, but right now don't have the extra $8 for the digital version. And my Kindle has spoiled me to the point where carrying around hardcovers (or books with embarrassing covers for instance) is kind of a pain.

One of these days... :D

message 8175: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Lloyd, they are available through Overdrive if your library has it.

Hmm...I have yet to try that. I'll look into it.

Lloyd | 415 comments Peep (thank goodness) wrote: "Lloyd, they are available through Overdrive if your library has it."

I looked and they seem to only have the audiobook. Sadly, me and audiobooks don't mix. (I just tried recently and I can't get into them like I do good ol' books)

Amazon has the first ebook for $6.39. Anyone spare some change? :) [just kidding - I get pestered for money from people every day and it is SO annoying]

message 8178: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Catie wrote: "You should give the Jacky book like a 10 minute chance Lloyd! It's one of the best out there, and what do you have to lose? It's free!"

I promise that I'll try the book...probably just not the audio. For me...it just doesn't feel like I've 'read' a book if I just listen to it. It isn't the same for me.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I cannot imagine the Jacky books without audio. I'm so spoiled by the songs, accents and music.

And what are you missing in a book that's just fun? That's one of those things that always bugs me about people who think audiobooks are cheating (and I'm not saying that this is you Lloyd). Unless its a great work of literature what is the point of whining about it. I don't think the Jacky books are going to change my life--except to make my drives much more fun!

Jacky is one of those books that I say "If you don't like this on auidobook then you just don't like audiobooks" so it could be a final test Lloyd.

PS Jaimy in MIssissippi Jack is making me laugh so hard. He's so naive compared to Jacky.

message 8180: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Oh, I don't think audiobooks are "cheating". I might give it a try. Check it out of the library and put it on my iPod.

I think that reading and reading comprehension were my highest scores on my SAT's. So I like putting that useless talent to use. :)

My 4 year old is having the same problem. I've been reading him books, and he doesn't want to watch the movie or read graphic novels because "they don't look like that!" or "That didn't happen". (Wizard of Oz in particular, is a WAY more exciting book than the movie...which is WAY different). Winnie-the-Pooh...well, that's different too, but he might actually make it through the movie one of these days. :P

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Reading was my highest on the ACT I believe.

I have a feeling most of this group would be the same way lol

message 8182: by Lloyd (last edited Apr 29, 2011 12:56PM) (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I just put the audio book on hold at the library. Not sure when I'll get to it though. I'm already contemplating..."It's only $6.39 for the ebook...it would cost me more than that to eat lunch out." :P

It's tough though, because Amazon has the paperback for $3.18 (or something like that). However, our apartment is already jam packed with so many books, I'll probably just opt for the digital from now on. (I love the space it saves)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Doesn't it drive you bonkers when the paperback is less than the ebook? But I have space issues so I usually pay more.

At least listen to the first CD. If you don't like it then oh well. If you do and you think its male-friendly let me know!

Did you listen to a clip of the audio to see what it is like? It is one of the better audiobooks out there. There are some good audiobooks and some are awesome. Guess which category JF would fit into?

*whispers* Give it a chance Lloyd... we have muffins posing as cupcakes!

Jen (jennifer_ashmy) | 242 comments @ Cassi: LOL. You are correct. My score on the reading part of the ACT was the highest.

But I was also a big science and math nerd :D

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I did well on science on the ACT BUT it seemed like ACT science involved a lot of reading comprehension too.

message 8188: by Delia (new)

Delia (deedreams) | 5 comments The last few comments make me glad I'm going to college in Canada! Although I did have to take the TOELF.

message 8189: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I always excelled in Reading/English/History. I sucked at Math/Science.

message 8190: by Delia (new)

Delia (deedreams) | 5 comments Same here. I was reaaally good at French & Italian too. English, Lit, Philosophy, Geography and History. But ask me what 2 + 1 is and i'll probably tell you 56 or start crying.

message 8191: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I did well in science and math too. LOVED biology...except having to dissect stuff.

I'm with the high five to science and math nerds too!

The only reason I remember reading and reading comprehension being so high was this was back when they graphed your scores and those two were were the biggest.

Me read good!

Fine. I will give everyones precious Bloody Jack audiobook a try. (I'd still rather just read the book.)

Peer pressure!

message 8192: by Delia (new)

Delia (deedreams) | 5 comments But dissecting stuff is so much fun! Or is it just me ... ?

message 8193: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Well, I love cats and refused to dissect one in my class. Teacher got all pissed when I said, "Can't I have a dog or something?" (Not that I would want to dissect a dog either. Fetal pigs and frogs were about as far as I wanted to go.)

message 8194: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I'd like to think there is a great computer program to let me virtually dissect now. (I know it's not the same, but would ease my not-liking-to-harm-anything side)

message 8195: by Arphaxad (last edited Apr 29, 2011 02:35PM) (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Very true. Nature is the fa-shizle! :P

(yes, it's late on Friday and I'm sick of working)

message 8197: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Lloyd I am so HAPPY to see you are giving the Jacky audiobook a try! Loved it! I am on book 7 and can not imagine the series in print. It was meant for audio.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I need to update my status on Mississippi Jack. I recently met Clementine. hehehehe

message 8199: by Heidi (new)

Heidi That book was crazy Cassi. When you are done let me know because I want to see if you had the same question I did! p.s. it was a welcome distraction from book 3, which I thought was quite a downer!

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Lloyd wrote: "Fine. I will give everyones precious Bloody Jack audiobook a try. (I'd still rather just read the book.)"

I read the book, and I think it ruined it for me. I have the audio book and will eventually listen to it and give it another shot. Trust these people, they know what they're talking about. THe book is written with a strong cockney accent and it's a bit hard to read (Or I felt it was). I think it would be much easier to hear.
