Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion
What are you reading now?
Peep wrote: "Duh Heidi! That's why I said I didn't believe that there was a problem. It was supposed to be funny because I basically defined the word. See, it's funny now, right? Right? Right?......"Oh. I knew that. I thought we were just going to keep going in circles with this, like "who's on first?" You know - I would say "precontemplation Peep" and would say "I don't have a problem Heidi". And so on and so on.
Peep wrote: "Trying to concentrate enough to read The Iron king is a total chore!"Drat Peep. That book is next for me after Life as We Knew it, which by the way took me forever to get past the first 75 pages, but is definitely getting better.
Sheila wrote: "Heidi how is life as we knew it? Are you liking it?"Well I am part way through and am liking it now -- for some reason the first part of the book, (the set up to the moon incident), took me forever to truge through. I hope to have it done by tomorrow night - so will let you know. I have been trying to read 100+ pages a night so I can get through my pile. I used to only read 50-60 as I am not a fast reader.
I know I liked it because I had young kids and I saw what the mom went through trying to keep her kids alive and it surely struck home. One of the top reviews is from a lady who had a newborn and she started planning everything and thinking how it would be if she were in the same situation. That's how I felt. It's certainly one of those books that made me think. Unfortunately I hated the other two books in the series.
I do the 50 page or 1 cd per book per day system. That is so funny how much we all seem to be alike with our addictions
I've got this on my TBR list. Might have to move it up.
I just got the new Linda Fairstein book on cd from the library. I am copying it to my iPod as we speak and all other books will be put on hold while I listen to that! I love Linda Fairstein and have read all of her books. Score!

My son is reading this for school - I think I am going to have to pick it up and see what it is all about.
Sheila wrote: "I do the 50 page or 1 cd per book per day system. That is so funny how much we all seem to be alike with our addictions"Sheila - I am psycho about my audio books. I listen to my mp3 phone (it has a great built in speaker) every morning as I get ready for work and when I walk outside. Then on my way to work and back home (about 40 minutes one way) I listen to a different audio book on CD, and last but not least, while I am showering, cooking, or cleaning --- I listen to a 3rd book on CD or tape (yes, my library still has tapes). But, I only actually read 1 book at a time.
Worse than that Heidi I generally have the LP book and the same book on my iPod so I can read or listen whichever is more convenient and that way I get through the book pretty quickly.
You should try them out Laura. I love audio books but never listen to them on the cd format. I copy them to my computer and then load them on my iPod. I actually have to start listening to some of my older books because my harddrive is getting pretty full of audiobooks. Once I listen to them I delete them to make room for something new.
My obvious choice of the very best audiobooks would be any of the HP books read by Jim Dale. If you like Janet Evanovich any of the Stephanie Plum books narrated by C. J. Critt or Lorelei King. Water for Elephants and the book thief were wonderful on audiobook also. Can't think of the narrators though. The reader makes a big difference for me. None of those are YA though except book thief
Big Score at the library today. Love my library. This is what is waiting for me.Heartbreaker [sound recording:] Garwood, Julie.
Think twice [sound recording:] Scottoline, Lisa.
Iron river [sound recording:] : a Charlie Hood novel Parker, T. Jefferson.
Silent in the grave [sound recording:] Raybourn, Deanna.
Catching fire [sound recording:] Collins, Suzanne.
Audrey Hepburn [text (large print):] : an intimate portrait Maychick, Diana.
How nice to have such an excellent addiction
The Book Thief on audio is one of Heidi's favorites, she always recommends it. I don't know if it's the same narrator but I'm sure one of the audio lovers will be able to tell you.At any rate you have to read/listen to it!
The Graveyard Book is pretty popular and it won the Audie award Book of the Year last year. It's read by the author and I think he has a great way of telling and reading his stories. Any audie award winners are a sure bet - as far as being entertaining and realistic.
I have just recently listenen to two read by author booksSarah Palin and Judas Horse by April Smith. I think generally they should leave it to the professionals. Another reader I like is Carolyn McCormick of Law and Order fame. I also really like the one that does the Anna Pigeon books but can't think of her name.
Fairest is one that I really liked reading. I just listened to a small section of the audiobook (won an audie for distinguished production) and it was really good! I don't think everybody liked Fairest but I did. If you don't listen to anything, you should at least listen to the sample.
Can you get audiobooks from the library and download them to your iPod? I might do that if it's possible.
Oh my goodness, I hate these samples! I want to listen to all of these books. They get my hopes up and then the sample ends! I'm telling you, these books are winners for a reason.Shannen you can. Most everyone does it and just delete them when they're done.
Shannen - my library has 2 websites they subscribe to where I can download audio-books (netlibrary and overdrive) -- check your libraries website - they probably have info on it there -- you will likely have to get a password from the library the first time. Sheila - looks like you will be reading a lot of books!
Laura - my favorite ALL time audiobooks are: The Help, all the Harry Potter books, and The Book Thief. I think when the main characters have an accent, or are from another country, audiobooks really bring out the story for me. I also liked Shiver, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Graveyard Book (Neil reads it himself and does a great job) and Princess Diaries on audiobook.
Shannen, besides the downloading you can just rip the cds of an audiobook on to your computer using windows media player and then transfer them to your iPod via iTunes. I was concerned about whether that was legal or not and consulted with the library director (a friend of mine) and she didn't have a problem with it at all.Oh yes Heidi The Help was great
Sheila - I do that sometimes when I need to return a book on CD, but it takes so long on my computer to download 1 CD into itunes - I don't have the patience to download 8-12 of them.
I read Tangled by Carolyn Mackler yesterday. It was good but not as good as some of her other books. Going to start The Nanny Returns.
Heidi and to think I probably have about 50 cds waiting for me at the crackhouse/library. I guess I will be busy for a while, huh. But while I am doing the ripping I can be listening to a book as well, so all is good.I am so excited. It is finally going to be 70 degrees this afternoon so I can read outside while my puppy plays in the yard.
I am LOVING retirement!
It is gorgeous outside today. I plan to take a stroll at lunch :) Wish I had the whole day off like you!
I'm reading Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev and having a little bit of hard time getting into it. I'm about 60 pages in. Has anyone read this?
Laura wrote: "I need a recommendation of a fabulous audio book then. Please."Any of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books!!! I could never listen to audio books until this series. James Marsters is the reader and he truly brings the books to life!
Sheila wrote: "I have just recently listenen to two read by author booksSarah Palin and Judas Horse by April Smith. I think generally they should leave it to the professionals. Another reader I like is Caroly..."
Surprised Sarah was able to get thru it if there were any big words..........okay, I couldn't resist and it won't happen again. Probably.....
Victoria wrote: "I'm reading Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev and having a little bit of hard time getting into it. I'm about 60 pages in. Has anyone read this?"I read it and believe me, it doesn't get any better. One of my biggest disappointments last year since it got so much hype.
Yes Melodie, she did struggle on any word with more than 6 letters. She was good at saying Alaska. That said, I love Sarah Palin! I would never ever vote for her but she makes me laugh.
Melodie wrote: "Laura wrote: "I need a recommendation of a fabulous audio book then. Please."Any of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books!!! I could never listen to audio books until this series. James Marsters ..."
Ohhh! I love Spike...I mean James!
Melodie wrote: "Sheila wrote: "I have just recently listenen to two read by author booksSarah Palin and Judas Horse by April Smith. I think generally they should leave it to the professionals. Another reader I..."
Melodie - I tried soooooooooooo hard to breeze over the fact that Sheila said she listened to Sarah Palin's book, but now that you mentioned it, I was thinking the same thing!
p.s. if you think Sarah really wrote that book I have a bridge to sell you (get it...bridge???) Ok I am done now. Well, at least until this weekend when I visit my dad, because he loves her too.
Yes Heidi, bridge to nowwhere, I get it. Now come on you guys you have to admit she is entertaining, right? Each and every time she opens her mouth something even more profoundly stupid comes out. I think she is hilarious! Oh and all the drama concerning her kids, it is reality tv at its finest.
My excellent public library just sent out an email saying they were no longer subscribing to a downloadable audio book service. Now we only have access to the ones offered by the state. Waaah!!!!!I was trying to check out The Help so I could listen to it while bailing out my basement.

As long as you love her for entertainment's sake and don't think she is the best thing since sliced bread (like my dad does), we are all good Sheila :)

Oh it's like rubbernecking a traffic accident, I can't help but look and I am ashamed of myself for it afterwards. The only thing more fantastical than the stuff that comes out of her mouth are the things she "wrote" in that book. Alright I will leave the politics alone now.
Annie wrote: "My excellent public library just sent out an email saying they were no longer subscribing to a downloadable audio book service. Now we only have access to the ones offered by the state. Waaah!!!!..."Ohhhh Annie! That is horrible - my library only had the State one (Netlibrary)for awhile too -- and unless, you love mysteries (like I do), it doesn't have a lot of current titles. Does your library have The Help on CD???? If not , ask them to order it!!! p.s. sorry about your basement - I feel your pain there.

I had to look that up and I still don't believe that there is a problem :P"
Stages of change Peep. Stages of change. And believe it or not pre-contemplation is a stage - even if you don't think there is a problem!
