Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) I have never read Huck Finn, but that is just horrible. Hope you can find a original copy, try ebay..lol. I get old books there all the time. :)

Catherine (cattymccat) | 95 comments I can't believe they are editing classic literature. That's so heartbreaking to me...

I'm reading Halo - finishing it up (Which is dragging on & on & on. I have approximately a hundred pages left & I feel like I'm just now getting somewhere!) & starting Nightshade (I'm about sixty pages into this one & so far, really enjoying it... Of course I thought I was enjoying Halo at sixty pages, so we'll see.).

Halo (Halo, #1) by Alexandra Adornetto Nightshade (Nightshade, #1) by Andrea Cremer

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I'm sure there will still be copies that have the N word in them. But I'm wondering if more editions will slowly edit it out. Plus I'm wondering if schools will take the easy road and use an edition without the N word rather than dealing with history as they should.

message 5155: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (cattymccat) | 95 comments If you start acting like that history never happened, that's the best way to have it replay itself in the future.

In my opinion at least.

The Book Thief is one I plan on reading this year also. I've heard nothing but good things.

I think we need to feel the discomfort when we read that word...that being uncomfortable is in fact a good thing. I agree about pretending history didn't happen. It's not all warm fuzzy roses and sunshine. History is ugly and horrible, and we want to remember it for just how awful it was.

Part of what bothers me is that in literature classes context needs to be taught. Part of the critical thinking process is taking a literary work and judging it not by our times, but by the time it was written in.

Plus Mark Twain was brilliant and ahead of his time in his views of equality. I want people to know that.

Same here, Scott. Thought I'd better read it and see what all the hype was about. :)

Well and removing the power words from a novel because we deem them inappropriate takes from the overall effect of the book. The writing and the terminology is how we connect to the time period that we are reading.

Are they then going to remove the N word from Gone with the Wind? And if so, how are we going to truly understand the dept of the book and the civil war? Or how about North and South?

I'm avidly against censorship. I believe that it should be done in the home, I censor my own daughter where I think best. My co worker brought me in a list of the books banned from schools across the country and I was just appalled at the amazing books that children aren't allowed to read and the reasons for it.

message 5161: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I agree completely.

message 5162: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Great. Now are they going to take out all of the Injun Joe references out of Tom Sawyer?

On a side note, I thought everyone has read Huck Finn! I must be in la la land.

message 5163: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I read it. It's one of the few classic's I've read.

message 5164: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Or I think that's the one. It's either Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn. It was a long time ago. I just remember them being on a raft as they tried to save a man who was a slave? LMAO, I think I need to read them both again.

message 5165: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Wendy wrote: "I read it. It's one of the few classic's I've read."

I thought everyone had to read it for school. Duh Heidi! Not everyone has to read the same books as you had to in school. Isn't it weird sometimes how you think everyone just knows something or has done something you have until you come out of your little box and realize the truth.

message 5166: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments So I hate to break up a really great discussion (especially since I agree with all of you) but I have to say I'm reading The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, #2) by James Dashner right now and I don't think Mr. Dashner has a freaking clue as to where he's going with this series. It may be fast-paced and entertaining, but I really don't think he knows where he's going with it.

message 5167: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Becca from all of the talk of that series I really don't think I will even give it a try. It sounds confusing as heck.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I had to read it during High School but really enjoyed it (enough that I've read other Mark Twain books).

Wendy the one that takes place on a raft trying to save a slave is Huckleberry Finn. The slaves name is Jim if that rings a bell.

I think I read they were changing the Injun Joe references as well.

message 5169: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Totally does. After I posted that I felt ashamed that I couldn't remember so I went to look. Then I put them both on hold for Friday pay day to put them on my Kindle and reread.

Becca | 1608 comments Heidi I wrote: "Becca from all of the talk of that series I really don't think I will even give it a try. It sounds confusing as heck."

Oh, I'm not confused by the story at all, but I don't think he really knows where he's going with it which is why his characters are so apethetic toward what is going on and are just trying to get through it. If he really knew what was going on with his own story, his characters would be smarter, they wouldn't feel as flat and the story would actually be headed somewhere. I just finished it and still feel the same way. Not confused, just like there really isn't going to be a resolution or if there is, it isn't going to be brilliant because he didn't have the end in sight from the beginning. Just dumb really.

You can get it free from a lot of places, as it's a classic. Here's a link from Project Gutenburg. Just scroll down to the Kindle format.

Kurukka Reading The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, #2) by Philip Pullman . The story's still confusing but it's entertaining and interesting enough to keep me reading and I already love Will.

It took me till chapter 15 to even get into The Maze Runner..then it got interesting..a couple of times I almost quit reading it. I have The Scorch Trials but its not something high on my TBR list. Now I am starting to wonder if I shouldn't have bought it. :(

Oh, it's entertaining, don't get me wrong. Definitely action packed and fast-paced, it just doesn't feel like the author knows what he's doing with it. I'm gearing myself up to be disappointed. You know how you can just feel it when the author is about to reveal something brilliant? Haven't had that feeling at all through the series.

Is it a Target gift card?

message 5179: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I saw free versions on Amazon's website too but one of them I looked at said it was missing pages. I'll definitely try out that link though, for sure.

I definitely agree that waiting for the Kindle to come in the mail stunk. Though it was really exciting when it got here. My daughter laughed at me because I was jumping around like an idiot.

I've already read it once, I'm doing a re-read. I picked it up for pretty cheap so I was giving it another try. I liked it the first time, but the reviews are good so I was going to get past book #1 this time.

Great, you'll probably like the rest of them then! They certainly haven't gone downhill; I'm eagerly anticipating the next one in the series :)

Lloyd | 415 comments Thanks. For now, I'll have to be content with reading the books on my iPod Touch. Soon though...soon.

Still chipping away at Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking, #3) by Patrick Ness in good old-fashioned book form though. :)

message 5194: by Heidi (last edited Jan 06, 2011 10:30AM) (new)

Heidi Lloyd I got my ereader over a week ago and I still have not read one single page of a book on it! I just love print books. Oh well. I have used the wifi and the mp3 on it!

p.s. Monsters of Men is a great book to be "stuck" with if I do say so myself!

I decided to read Matched. It should be a quick and easy read, or at least a hope...

A year or two ago, I would have been one of those, "You'll have to pry my book from my cold, dead hands!" But with another move on the near horizon and the tons of boxes of books, bookshelves and the lack of space to have them...yeah, I'm now more open to ebooks and having a pocket library. Even on my iPod, it's pretty nice. (Having an instant dictionary has come in handy a time or two as well.)

Chaos Walking was probably my favorite series of 2010. Even though I'm not done yet, I've really enjoyed it. (Despite wanting to yell at the characters many times. "Don't be so stupid! Arrrrg!") Good stuff.

message 5197: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I sure everyone will be shocked by this, but I am going off topic! I posted this in my audiobook group, but I am super excited about this, so I am sharing here too. I finally figured out I could buy an fm transmitter for the Playaway audiobooks from my library. Since Lover Mine is 22 hours long, this has made my week! I can now listen to it in the car on my drive ( I did today!). Now I can check out all the Playaway books from the library I have been avoiding. Score for me :)

message 5198: by Sara (new)

Sara (rose081900) | 177 comments Lloyd- I yell at characters in books too, even though they don't have the mind to listen to me. What a shame, if only they would listen and save themselves the trouble of getting into trouble (depending on the book). I hardly read hardcover books anymore, since I'm so use to e-books now, I know what a shame.

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) Lloyd,

I have hated hardcovers now for years. Use to be a day I wouldn't (or couldn't) wait for paperback. Now...well, soon I won't have to. Carrying around several thousand pages on a fraction of my iPod = pretty darn cool! No shame in that. :)
