Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion
What are you reading now?
I guess I can lose the I in my names since I think I scared most of the other Heidi's away! I am liking Alanna Emily - I should be done with it in the next day or so and will give an update. How many books are in the series?
Firelight! Loved this book. Sophie Jordan zigged every time I thought she would zag. I love a writer that is unpredictable! Lots of action, romance and great characters - you should read this book. Can't wait for book 2 Vanish and I usually prefer stand-alone books with no sequels, but when it's so interesting - you just want it to go on and on... sorta like this sentence.
Sorry to bogart this thread, but since it is new I would like to invite anyone who is reading a book with any of these themes (or books even remotely within these themes - seriously even REMOTELY) to join us on the Monthly Theme Read thread. Jan. catagories are :
Martin Luther King Day -books about oppression and/or race relations
2. Australia Day - book written by Aussie author and/or book based in Australia
3. Coming of Age Day in Japan - coming of age stories.
As my Aussie friends say, Cheers!
Hey my fellow BDB lovers. I can't find the thread for it, so I will just ask here. Does anyone have Lover Avenged (book 8) in their possession? If so, how many chapters does it have? I am listening to it on a stupid playway device and it tells you NOTHING about where you are in the book or how much is left. I think I am on chapter 45 (how many stinking chapters does she need??) and wanted to know how much is left. p.s. it is 22 hours long. Yowza!

Oh Man Amanda! And here I thought I was so close to done with it (especially that stupid ghost story you warned me to be patient with). Anyway, thanks SO SO much for the update!!
I finally finished Sarah's Key, it's not a YA book, but my gosh it's a beautiful, sad, heart wrenching book and I'm glad I took the time to read it.I am now starting The Ring of Solomon: A Bartimaeus Novel. I love Bartimaeus, I've missed him so much!!!!!!

No..."
I think that's just the theme. Because of Australia Day, you can read a book based in Australia or by an Australian author... unless I'm reading your question wrong. In that case, move along nothing to see here.

I don't remembrer a ghost story in Lover Avenged... I'm quite confused right now.

It's in Lover Mine not Lover Avenged. Sorry I think I got a bit confused. Lover Mine has the story about the haunted house. I had Lover Avenged in front of me at that moment.

Yup. Peep is right. It is a "theme". Hence the title "theme read". Ha! :)
Did anyone see the preview last night for I Am Number Four the movie (to be released in February? The preview came on during The Bachelor...please don't judge me on my guilty pleasures...). The book is on my TBR...Maybe it needs to be next?
Okay, I've been away from the boards for awhile, but I finished up
and started
.I'm also considering treating myself to a Kindle for a combination Christmas/Birthday present. While I'm waiting for the store I'm going to get it to restock, I'm buying a few books while they are on sale. I just bought
and am considering
.Looks like if I get a Kindle, it will be much like my current bookshelves...filled with books waiting to be read!
Whose read Skippy Dies? A writer I respect has recommended it, but the description does not appeal to me. I need some more feedback, please. My third novel has a 16 year old narrator with leukemia so I'm particularly sensitive to credible teenagers. Perks of a wallflower drove me crazy because he sounded slow mentally and hardly like the tenth graders I know who at least talk about books and ideas, not just sex and social posturing.

Yay for Monsters of Men! I hope you enjoy it. I have The Book Thief at home waiting to be read and everyone raves about how good it is, but for some reason I haven't found the motivation to read it just yet.
I'm almost half way through The Ask and the Answer. Well actually, more like a third. The first book made me really really sad so I took my time starting this one. I'm nervous.
I loved the Ask and the Answer more than TKONLG. I think the series got better with each book. Kourtni the Book Thief on audio is EXCELLENT, but either way it is a 5 star book for me and if you have it in print you get to see the pretty pictures/story in the middle. Damn you Aussie writers (hint hint *cough* theme read) - you are just so good at writing YA books.
Hahaha! Heidi you never fail to crack me up! My goal is to get it read this month then. And the Chaos books do get better with each book.
I finally just had to close the Amazon tab. For one, I'm at work. And I just kept going "click", "click", "click". They should really put another "are you SURE?" step in there for us impulse buyers. I'm going to have to pace myself. Thankfully, if I keep myself from buying any more books until I finish up rereading these George R. R. Martin novels...I should be okay!Oh yeah...and Monsters of Men of course. :D
Hello, my name is Lloyd and I am a reading addict...
Lloyd, stay away from the Amazon tab, no more Amazon for you. Please don't make me nag you so you don't compulsively buy books until you're done with the George R.R.Martin books, after that you can buy more :).I'm Sara, and I'm a reading addict too!
I have Book Thief on my stack too. Listened to The Shadows of the Wind by Runon and that was wonderful. Also Forgery of Venus by Michael Gruber. he can make a tale last forever.

We must band together and support one another!...
I just counted my emails...seven books today. But three of them were free...so...that's okay, right?(It's so cold...) :P
just finished up
which was good, but not as great as everyone makes it out to be. Now I'm totally switching gears and I'm going to start
.

I think you did fine, especially with three free books!!!....So, you only bought 4 books, good job!!!!..Now stay away from Amazon! LOL

At first I was all, "Why did you choose THAT?!" because it just doesn't sound like her thing at all. But, other than a couple comments from her about a "cheese factor" here and there, she enjoyed it. So my outlook about the book is actually brighter now. (Though I'm still not sure when I'm going to get to it)
I think I mentioned some time ago that I need to join a book buyers annonymous. (Fellow addict here!)

Oooh! Traci, I loved Nightshade! One of my favorite reads of 2010! :)"
I just finished this book and liked it a lot!

I just picked this up, sounded pretty interesting and different from what I usually read.
Right now I'm reading
and can't put it down. I am amazed it took me this long to read this series. Hooked!
Sarah wrote: "Don't we love those free kindle books, and the $3.99 ones that are on the New and Noteworthy too."I'm trying to learn how to find the great deals. I've run into some fantastic free or cheap deals just randomly, yet can't seem to find a central location or means of finding them. Anybody have any tips?
I need to learn more about finding good Kindle deals too. I can't depend on people to retweet everytime there's a free book (cuz that's how I found one already). Aside from the classics which are fairly easy to get.
I saw a column on the right on my Kindle page for the best selling list of fiction (checking on my novel Catcher, Caught) and there was a column on the right of free Kindle books. I'll try to find it again and post it here. Maybe you can sort in a category like fiction by price and the free ones will come up first. ????

I sometimes even caught a little window on the right for "deals of the day", but can't find it now. I've found a deal on their blog once too. Hmm...perhaps I should look into Catcher, Caught to show support. :P
I'm curious about this "Across the Universe" story because I enjoy sci-fi but more people than science focused (think Ender's Game). However the cover makes it look way too romantical for me. Pretend I'm a boy. Would you suggest this novel?

I was probably able to enjoy it more because it was people-focused instead of just focusing on the science part (I'm not particularly a sci-fi fan). There was a little romance but not a whole heck of a lot, in my opinion. The book is in the POV of two characters: one who was 'thawed' too early after being cryogenically frozen on a spaceship (Godspeed) bound for a new planet & one who was born on Godspeed and raised to be a leader for those maintaining the ship. I really liked how the two main characters developed throughout the book. Also, the book has two alternate covers... one with the 'kiss' & one that's a blueprint of the ship... pretty sweet, I think. Happy reading!

. The movie looks fantastic though. You can YouTube search for extended trailer of I Am Number Four and it's the longer version.

Ha, you'll be in trouble then!!!!..
So I'm just checking in (because this is the thread I normally hang out in) to say that the world just broke my heart by putting out editions of Huckleberry Finn without the N word. I plan to find a proper edition with the proper bad words and read it as soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading. I hate the fact that people think they have to dumb down and make things PC for kids to study them.
