I'd tried to read The Golden Compass when I was 14, but it hadn't worked for me at the time, I had given up in the middle of it. Actually, it was after I saw the movie that I thought I had to try again. I think I'll have a new way to approach the series now that I'm older (and now that I can actually read it in english XP)

I haven't read it, but a friend of mine did and when she described it I just got turned off. Perhaps not fair, but couldn't help it.
Wendy wrote: "I haven't read it, but a friend of mine did and when she described it I just got turned off. Perhaps not fair, but couldn't help it."I was turned off my the religious aspects. I'm not into that stuff when I am reading fiction.
Did you like the Narnia books? When I was a kid I never noticed the Christian theme, but now that I'm older it's so blaringly obvious.I did notice the anti-religion theme in Compass too, when I watched the movie.
Ha! That's actually a subject I find very interesting. But then, it depends on how the author uses it.
The strength of Meyer's beliefs only hit me with full force when Breaking Dawn came out. Until then, I hadn't really thought she was so... well, so religious. It ruined the entire saga for me.

I actually like it when it's justified and more neutral than agressive. If it kills the story, it's no good.

I like both. As far as theologians go I adore CS Lewis. Mere Christianity is an AMAZING book. But the anti-religion in compass didn't bother me but I do think its more of an older YA book because the issues it raises are complicated/confusing especially in the last book. My brother asked me about it once but I suggested waiting till high school so he could better grasp what was going on.
Well, I'm strongly anti-fanaticism, so if that's the main message, I think it will be okay with me. :) I'll let you know what I think!

And I loved Mere Christianity too (well, and pretty much everything I've read by CS Lewis..)
C.S. Lewis is one of my favorites, but then I grew up reading Narnia every night as a bedtime story. I liked the first book in Pullman's trilogy, but the other two don't rank very high for me. They struck me as just plain weird.
Kristen wrote: "It took me awhile to get through
too. I'm curious what you think when you finish it."Finally got to the end, but only because I hate to leave a book unfinished! I found it pretty unsatisfying, overall: the story took ages to get going, the characters weren't very likeable at all, and the ending was...weird. But still, a lot of people seem to like it! I suspect I have weird taste.
Moving on to
and
now.
just started
. I really liked the first two so I have high hopes for this one :)You guys should see the stack of books I have on my coffee table from Christmas/gift card shopping. It's insane and slightly stressing me out haha
I just finished I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You and Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy. Next up is Prom
Carmel wrote: "Heidi I, I thought you might like to look at this list for next year's most anticipated books. Hmmm a certain Cassie Clare features 2 times!!!! Sorry not meaning to rub it in or anything, my friend..."Did you just give me a list from MTV and ask me to take it seriously?? I haven't watched MTV for at least 15 years! I am old. MTV classics is more my style :)
I finished Finnikin of the Rock the other day. I loved it. It was great. I started Bloody Jack #8 and I don't want to put it down. Happy New Year everyone!(at least at midnight tonight)
Hey, just finished
and have to say that I loved it. I loved Natalie Palmer's straight forward writing style. It is a good coming-of-age story with some heavy hitting subject matters mixed in. The main characters Gemma and Jess are irresistible. I give it 5 stars!
I'm reading Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. I've heard great things about it. And now I am adding Second Kiss by Natalie Palmer to my to read list Thanks Kerri. Happy New Year to everyone, have fun and be safe.

We're staying home tonight. We got an houre deurve tray and we're just enjoying the New Year at home, me my daughter and my husband. It'll be board games and Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve for us. (New Kids are slated to perform, heehee.)
Catie wrote: "Well, I've got Hero, Jellicoe Road, and The Year of Secret Assignments from the Library. Have you read these yet? :)"I would really like to read Jellico Road. So maybe I will go that direction.
Heidi I wrote: "Theresa wrote: "I'm reading Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. I've heard great things about it. And now I am adding Second Kiss by Natalie Palmer to my to read list Thanks Kerri. Happy New Year ..."Yeah I'm kind of a sucker for cheesiness ;)
Right now I am reading Wisdom by Amanda Hocking. It is the 4th book in the My Blood Approves series. I bought the first book (My Blood Approves) because it was only 99 cents for the kindle version, and I have been hooked on the series (the other books are $2.99 for kindle; Fate, Flutter, and Wisdom). I actually think this series is way better than Twilight, and it has a much better love triangle! The 1st book is a little frustrating because it's kind of obvious what is happening, and of course the main character isn't figuring any of it out, but the books are really fast paced and I LOVE it! I would recommend this series to everyone, not just Twilight fans. I shouldn't even compare it to Twilight, it just happens to be another vampire romance.
I just read Melanie Nillis' Starfire Angels and am going to pick up book 2. Kindle, of course. Big on the Kindle.

Happy New Year folks. I've been out of town the last few days and finally got home today. There is no way I'm reading the 92 posts I missed.I read 77 books for the year 2010, now I'm starting my count over again for 2011, YES!
^^^ i started in mid january last year so i'm giving myself until the 13th to get the 50 books i aspired to. i'm at 48 right now. i'll be done in no time. :D
I read 71-73 books (some on my list I might still be in the middle of. I need to update it...) And I didn't start counting til later so I tried to remember everything that I had read so it may not be entirely accurate.
Oh I have that one on my TBR I read really good reviews about it :) Emily Christine wrote: "I'm reading Fixing Delilah by Sarah Ockler :D"
Oh my this is going to be embarrass; but I'm a bookworm I reade 155 books in 2010 I honestly couldn't believe I read that many!
Whoaooo Catie! Pretty amazing! Do you read YA only? I like to read YA & Chick-lit every now and then some fiction Catie wrote: "Yeah, I've never counted before - and I know there are some that I never put into GR, but for 2010 I had 221. I was pretty embarassed too. I am excited to see what this year's number is, since my..."
Wow, over 200 books, you should never be embarrassed, that's awesome! I'm hoping to read more books this year. I'm currently reading
, which so far is pretty good. I'm glad I decided to read it instead of listening to it, I just couldn't concentrate on listening to someone read to me.
I've just started Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. This is my first book of the year and my goal is to read 100 before the year is out. I read nearly 40 last yr so hopefully i'll reach my target. Fingers crossed!
Right now I am reading
and
I am having a hard time getting into Rosebush but I think its because it reminds me a lot of The Lying Game and I just read it so its just hard to get into but over all its not a bad book so far. :)
Evelina C wrote: "Today I plan to start Clockwork Angel. I can't wait!"I love Cassandra Clare--I want to read this so bad, but I'm waiting for it to be in paperback. Let us know what you think of it! :)
I'm currently reading I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith--I'm about halfway done with it and loving it so far! :)
