Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion
What are you reading now?
Ack!! I just finished Shiver and had to read the ending again. I feel cheated! The writing was so good up until the last moment and then it felt like she wrote the ending in the airport. "Oh, that's my flight." I guess it's a good way to ensure people will buy the next in the series, but really.
Yes Annie! It was an abrupt ending. I guess she guaranteed a lot of readers for Linger so we can see what the heck happened!
Bluemoon wrote: "I just finished reading The Seven Deadly Wonders and now im going to start reading Sammy Keyes and the Search for Snake Eyes By Wendelin Van Draan."Wendelin is one of my all-time favorite YA authors. Her books make for great read-alouds too. I am going to have to make a trip to the library because I think she has one I haven't read yet. Thanks for reminding me about her.
Just started Gone by Lisa McMann.. it'll be slow going though, as I have to read Frankenstein and H.G. Wells' The Time Machine for classes this week. Oooh I can't wait for summer when I can read whatever I want whenever I want!
Alabama Moon by Watt Key.First novel by a rural postal carrier. Original. Funny. A little crazy. Good ending.
Bluemoon wrote: "Annie wrote: "Bluemoon wrote: "I just finished reading The Seven Deadly Wonders and now im going to start reading Sammy Keyes and the Search for Snake Eyes By Wendelin Van Draan."Wendelin is one ..."
I think my favorite is The Runaway Elf, but I also like her book Runaway about Holly's life before meeting up with Sammy.
Traci wrote: "Just started Gone by Lisa McMann.. it'll be slow going though, as I have to read Frankenstein and H.G. Wells' The Time Machine for classes this week. Oooh I can't wait for summer when I can read wh..."I saw that Gone by Lisa McMann got some pretty bad reviews on here, so I skipped it. Let us know how it is when you finish :)
Just finished The Forest of Hands and Teeth. I enjoyed it but felt like she left too many things unanswered. I know there is a second book but looks like it goes on to a new story. Its a zombieish book which i havent read before, but liked it.
Bluemoon wrote: "Annie wrote: "Bluemoon wrote: "Annie wrote: "Bluemoon wrote: "I just finished reading The Seven Deadly Wonders and now im going to start reading Sammy Keyes and the Search for Snake Eyes By Wendeli..."Not my favorite either.
I'm a little worried that my tbr pile may fall over and bury me in my comfy chair...
Jo wrote: "I'm reading Fallen"I just bought that one yesterday, and I'll be starting it sometime this week.. do you like it so far?
Heidi wrote: "Traci wrote: "Just started Gone by Lisa McMann.. it'll be slow going though, as I have to read Frankenstein and H.G. Wells' The Time Machine for classes this week. I hadn't really heard much about it, because I don't like spoilers so I tend to not read reviews until after I have read the book.. but yeah. It was kind of a letdown. I enjoy her style, it reminds me a bit of Ellen Hopkins in this one, but in prose instead of verse.. idk. I had mixed feelings :\
Whitney wrote: "I just picked up Uglies by Scott Westerfield at the library. No spoilers please, everyone seems to have read it but me! I'm excited."You won't be disappointed. What I like most about Westerfeld is his range. I'm reading his latest novel, Leviathan, now and you'd imagine he always wrote steampunk.
I loved The Dark Divine! Hope you like it too!
Just Read Runaway Storm by D. E. Knobbe. Anybody else read it?Nathan is a runaway even though life isn't too terrible for him. He has parents who care, but when their separation drives Nathan's heart apart, he decides to steal his father's kayak to fulfill his life dream. He kayaks day and night, battling rough storms and violent drug smugglers; meeting runaway friends along the way. Danger lurks in every corner in the uncharted string of islands off of San Juan, and the need for food, water, and safety is vital at this desperate point in Nathan's life. Can he save himself and the Goth girl who saved his life? Or will he die trying?
I was very enthralled with Runaway Storm by D.E. Knobbe. It was very good, an easy read, although it was more of a leisurely read than an edge-of-your- seat thriller. I would recommend this book to any teenager who would like an informative and highly likeable plot. Runaway Storm includes very good detail and action scenes that portray very believable scenarios. At the end of the book I was gripped with suspense and worry, tensions ran high - I loved the elaborate detail, and was pleasantly surprised.
Right now I'm reading Valiant, and I can't wait for it to be over. ugh. I can't wait to write this books' review, too. Tithe was ok, eh, meh...but I didn't struggle to get through it. The only reason I'm going to read Ironside is because I like Kaye's story.
I'm really going to need a pick-me-up after this series.
I have started reading My Sister;s Keepers by Jodi Picoult a few days ago, it is really good so far.It is about a girl has a sister with leukimia and she has always had to donate her organs and blood cells so her sister wouldn't die. Now she says that she does not want to do it and she has rights to her own body so she is trying to sue her parents.
Has anyone read this book? Was the ending good? Please reply.
Heidi - Let me know how you like Gone. I have that on my TBR list. I just started Drums, Girls, And Dangerous Pie.
Figment - Did you read Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception already? I liked Lament but thought Ballad was just OK. Let us know what you think. :)

Shannen - how are you liking Girls, Drums, and Dangerous Pie? Moatmeal please!!! p.s. as you know I was not a big fan of Lament, so skipped Ballad since you said it was just ok :)

I'm not very far into Girls, Drums and Dangerous Pie. I only read Wednesday night but so far, so good!

About 3/4 of the way done with Ironside. I'm actually REALLY liking it. I was so skeptical after the first two books in the series, so I'm glad this one is better.
Rainy afternoon--let the kids play the computer and I read Catalyst in its entirety. LHA has a real ability to pull me into her characters' world. Speak did the same thing to me.Ah, well, now back to life and laundry.
Shannen wrote: "Heidi wrote: "Shannen - how are you liking Girls, Drums, and Dangerous Pie? Moatmeal please!!! p.s. as you know I was not a big fan of Lament, so skipped Ballad since you said it was just ok :)"..."
Hop to it!!
Hehe! I read more of it today on my break. Will read more tonight but I gotta watch the Real Housewives reunion show. Yep, not only do I love fluffy books, I love fluffy TV shows too! :)
Just finished Fallen and I really enjoyed it. It was hard to put down. Just found out as well that Disney has optioned it for a movie (I think almost all the big young adult books are being turned into movies these days, jeesh) But I would definitely recommend it.I think Thirteen Reasons Why is next on my list.. but I have to read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin for class.
Traci - I see that Fallen is one of those books that people either loved or hated (like City of Bones). Usually when that is the case, I hate it, but I am considering giving it a try. I am a little concerned Disney optioned it though. Is it fluffy???
Peep wrote: "Heidi wrote: "I am listening to
on audio book - so far so good Peep."It's different, right?"
Um... very different so far! I forgot to tell you the adult male that checked it out for me at the library told me that he was really excited to read it too. That never happens to me so I took it as a good sign :)
Shannen wrote: "Hehe! I read more of it today on my break. Will read more tonight but I gotta watch the Real Housewives reunion show. Yep, not only do I love fluffy books, I love fluffy TV shows too! :)"I used to watch the original Housewives from OC, but I don't like any of the new girls. I always like Lori - at least she seemed somewhat genuine.
Heidi wrote: "Traci - I see that Fallen is one of those books that people either loved or hated (like City of Bones). Usually when that is the case, I hate it, but I am considering giving it a try. I am a lit..."Hm. Yeah, I guess you could describe it that way. But the thing that bothers me is everyone is freaking out about Disney making it.. I think they do an excellent job at darker films. Two prime examples: Pirates of the Caribbean and the newest Alice in Wonderland.
The main character, Luce, reminds me a lot of Bella.. so if you hated her, you'll probably hate Luce as well. I can definitely see the two different spectrums and I can understand why a lot of people hated it. I guess the thing that I really enjoyed was the slow reveal. It's a pretty long book--452 pages-- but you don't really find out anything until the end which is probably what kept me reading. I just really wanted to know what happened!
Traci wrote: "Just finished Fallen and I really enjoyed it. It was hard to put down. I found it at the library and was going to check it out, but I made the mistake of sitting down to read a few chapters, and before I knew it 5 hours had passed and I had read the whole thing!
Ohhhh - Bluemoon you MUST read The Book Thief. I demand you to (jk :) p.s. to warn you it takes a little to get used to it at the beginning, but stick with it. p.s. I am still waiting for your thoughts on Beekeeper's Apprentice, so hop to it! :)
I started reading Bleeding Violet yesterday and the book had me hooked from page 5. I read almost 200 pages already and I cant wait to dive into it again? Anyone read it?
Traci wrote: "Just finished Fallen and I really enjoyed it. It was hard to put down. I think it was just really slow getting to the point. It seemed to take forever to get exciting, but when it did it was great!
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. I'm liking it so far, but I'm still thinking about The Dead-Tossed Waves, which I finished yesterday.
Finished Thirteen Reasons Why this morning. It was extremely sad, but I felt very emotionally connected to the characters. It's a very strong read, but if you don't like controversial topics I'd shy away from this one. It's about a girl who commits suicide and leaves behind cassette tapes explaining why. Going to be taking a slight break from young adult.. I'm finally getting around to starting The Time Traveler's Wife tomorrow. I've heard mixed reviews so here goes nothing...
Emily wrote: "I did love The Dark Divine! SO good! ♥"
I loved it too!
I just finished Drums, Girls, And Dangerous Pie. It was really good. Very touching.
Not sure what I'm going to read next. I think I'm going to succumb to peer pressure from Heidi and Peep and start reading The Hunger Games. :)

DO IIIIITTTT!!!! You will so not regret it!
The Hunger Games is probably one of my absolute favorites. Once you pick it up, it's almost impossible to put down again. The story will stay with you for a very long time!

I liked it too, but I'm not sure about how I feel it being optioned by Disney. If anyone breaks out into song and dance, I'll walk out!
Right now, I'm reading The Iron King. Next is Hush, Hush.
I started reading The Hunger Games last night and even had a dream about it. Can't wait to read more!
Shannen wrote: "I started reading The Hunger Games last night and even had a dream about it. Can't wait to read more!"Well hurry up and finish so you can pick a side. It's important!
Emily wrote: "Oooh! I loved Hush, Hush. And I want to read Iron King. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it."Hey I just heard of Iron King last night. I put it on my to be read list, and will try to order it through my library. Just in case you wondering...lol.
Emily wrote: "The only reason not to is because you will be SO wanting #3 and will have to wait until August to get it! :) REALLY good books!"Yeah, Shannen has experience waiting on books to come out. I'm sure the wait won't bother her too much :)
I haven't gotten far enough yet to pick a side. As far as I can tell, only Peeta is going to be in the rest of the book but Gale must come into it again later since he made such an impression on Heidi. :)
I also added The Iron King to my list, as well as Deadly Little Secret. My TBR list is growing faster than I can read!
Yes, I do know a thing or two about waiting for a book since Shadowfever isn't due out until December. It's going to kill me (but I think it might kill Peep first)! LOL

Oh good Shannen! I am so glad we badgered you into reading the Hunger Games :) Now if I can just get you to be pro Peeta, all will be well :) I added the Iron King to my tbr pile last week too! Popular book. Hope it doesn't suck since everyone on here seems to plan to read it. Traci - I read Time Traveler's Wife. Get ready for some whiplash because it jumps around a lot. In the end I did not like it, but it seems from the reviews people either loved it or hated it, so you will probably balance things out and love it.
Why was I thinking Heidi is pro-Gale and Peep is pro-Peeta? Do I have that backwards?

I loved this ..."
I liked the first, the second was Ok for me. I donated them to my kids school. I checked out the third from the library and ended up taking it back. Maybe someday I may get around to it, but it's not on my must read list.
