SOLVED!: Wordless picture book w/ famous stories occuring around traveler [s]

I'm looking for a wordless picture book that involved a man setting out on a journey and as he walked along the road, all sorts of famous stories were enacted around him on the pages. For example, in the distance would be a tower with Rapunzel with the witch walking off and a prince on a horse riding toward her. On another part of the same page spread would be multiple other stories unfolding - some from history, some from folklore, legends, and fairy tales, and I think there were some Bible stories as well. The fun part was looking at everything on each spread and figuring out which story each little drama was representing.

The art style was similar to (but darker in color than) the The Jolly Postman: Or Other People's Letters but I've looked at everything by that illustrator and it's not anything else he's done.

I read them in the early 1990s but I think they were published in the 80's or earlier even.

Any ideas?
