SOLVED. blind boy stranded on island with old man [s]

all i remember from the book is the main character is blind and stranded on an island with an old man. im pretty sure the boy became blind becuse of the same reason he's stranded on an island, but im not sure. He was actually self independant after awhile( wtih the help of the old man) and had a rope leading from a fishing spot, to his hut he shared with the old man, and back. also one day a huge storm comes and the man protects the boy by squishing him against a palm tree and letting the debris shred his back to pieces. by morning, the old man was dead. eventually,fishermen find the boy and he is rescued. i remember they move to america for his surgury to correct his blindness. the surgury is successful, but his vision is still blurred with thick glasses. i remember the book ending, and him expessing his want to find the island and close his eyes and live by the rope and feeling the direction of the sun on his eyelids.
