If you want to, go ahead. It's your story. But my advice would be to keep the name realistic.

Which is a tad bit hypocritical of me. But.

Ooh, I like Sammie. Kriss suggested Samantha and I liked that a lot but I didn't want them both to end in "a" but if Samantha went by Sammie the ending sounds would be different.

So far it is 2 for Christine and 1 for Sammie. Although I can outvote everything in the end. xD

It appears as if it is most likely going to be Christine at this point.

Thanks, everyone!

Kay so my character was originally named Jenna but I might change her name because I looked it up and Jenna means small bird which is definetly not my "Jenna" So I'm going to change her name.

Help? This is a bit about her, She has short caramel straight hair, bulging blue eyes, her chin and elbows are always jutting out and usually her lips read a grimace as she moves all the time and has never found home in one place, Oh and she's 13 or 14 haven't decided yet.

I don't think the meaning of your character's name has to necessarily match her personality. If I were you I wouldn't change it, unless you dislike the name for another reason. Just my opinion.

message 715: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for your opinion!

No problemo. :]

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments I'm making a small-town story in which there's a familiy named Johnsten, and it's traditional that every woman is named after a Roman character or figure. Too odd?

Brigid is right. My mom says that my name means 'grace', and I am definitely not graceful at all.

message 719: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
My name means "noble" and "kind." Heh. Right.

message 720: by [deleted user] (new)

According to babynames, mine also means 'gracious' and 'merciful'... which I can be, sometimes, depending on the person...

message 721: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I think you're gracious and merciful.

message 722: by [deleted user] (new)

And you're noble and kind. :) Like I said, though, I can be the complete opposite of those things a lot of the time.

*nods* Same here.

I think it depends on which Romantic names you're choosing. Normally the combination of a Germanic name like Johnsten isn't too big an issue if it's combined with a name with classical roots, so...but then, if it's directly Romantic, you might have to choose them carefully, or they might sound a little...jarring? There's nothing wrong with a name like Aurelia, Sylvia or Dominica, but, for instance, Aquilia or Quintia Johnsten is...a bit weird. But then, if that's what you're going for, if that's the point, then, why not? There are some exceptionally pretty Latin names.
This post had a purpose at one point, but it has since been lost.

That could actually be an interesting metaphor.

message 726: by [deleted user] (new)

Wait, Yue means joy? I've read that it means moon, too. *confused*

message 727: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, that makes sense. *nods*

message 728: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments ok, i need help.
i need a new name for one of my characters. right now her name is Jasmine, but it doesnt work any more and i need to change it. i'm just having trouble figuring out what to change it to. to give you some backround on her:
the story takes place in a fantasy midevil-ey time. Jasmine is a tomboyish noble and has seven older brothers. right now she's away at finishing school and is soon going to get kidnapped by the bad guy.
any ideas people?

message 729: by Maria (new)

Maria (melonhead101) | 20 comments Here are a few medieval names:
Alison
Claire
Ava
Clarissa
Emma

message 730: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments hmmmmmm....
alison doesnt work cuz i have a different character named alyssa. emma and ava are too plain. she needs a pretty, noble-ey name but not a made up one, a real name, cuz her brothers names are very common.
i'll think about clarissa and claire.
do you have any more suggestions?

People around that time had somewhat religious names. I'd consider Salome, Susannah or Hannah.

message 732: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments hmmmmmmm. maybe susaannah. it just doesnt fit her so well. any more idea?

message 733: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments Think Biblical. Deborah, Judith, Ruth, Esther, Naomi, Rahab.

message 734: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments deborah..... hm........ maybe judy..... actually, maybe esther would work. thanks!

message 737: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
If it's fantasy medieval and you aren't trying to be historically accurate, you can use whatever names you want.

message 738: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments i know. it is fantasy midievil but i still want her name to be a real name that actually exists. i have a million made up gorgeous names, but i really want a really one.

I need a name for a nerdy yet attractive boy to go with the name Emily. He has curly black hair and blue eyes. His name was formerly Bo but apparently it's laughable and too femme so I need a new name.

I was thinking of Andy or Geoff. Any other suggestions?

message 740: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I know a kid named Max so I'll always imagine him while I'm writing. xD

I think I'll probably go with Geoff.

message 741: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
Jeff. It's just spelled differently.

message 742: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
REALLY? >.<
Can you explain why Jeff is better than Geoff?

I really like Andy for him but then it's "Andy and Emily" and I don't know if that sounds bad or not.

message 743: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
It was in the top 1,000 names of 1994...

message 744: by Anna (new)

Anna (tartanthorn) wow...figures... :) Seriously the "jee-OOF" thing just made my day.

message 745: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I'll keep trying to find a better name, but I may end up going with Geoff.

I agree about the jee-OOF thing, though, which is kind of a problem. That's why I didn't spell Shawn "Sean" because I always think of "seen" when I see that name.

NOT ANASTASIA. That is one of my many names and I don't want it to be used in an inappropriate manner. xD
