Noran Miss Pumkin I am stuck with the original crew--started reading them in the 1970's. is you need a listing--just see mine! I was shocked of how many ST books i had read, after listing the titles on this site. I have now read one in 2-3 years now I think.

I now mainly buy stories that interest me, especially ones that have Bones McCoy in them as a feature storyline.

Most of my collection is given away 15-16 years ago now. I bought every novel to read for completeness.

Anyone know any recent novels in that 2 years, I should get?

Travis Bird (travisbird) | 14 comments Breaks my heart to hear you gave 'em! But I hoard these things.

I think there's a website for tie-in fiction which is referred to in the endpapers of a lot of the paperbacks where titles are listed. You may find newer titles listed there.

message 3: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) I've read a little of everything, though I'm mostly a original crew or Next Gen guy.
Read a ton of them, but during the Voyager years I drifted away from the books. Got back into it with the New FRontier series and I pick up a book every now and then.
Like the new spin off series that have been coming out, Vanguard and Orion.

message 4: by Noran (new)

Noran Miss Pumkin Fear not, I passed them onto a new trekie!

message 5: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (danm) | 2 comments Mostly TOS. There was a time when I (like many others, I'm sure) was trying to make sure I bought every new book that came out. I even kept it up at the beginning of TNG series of books, but then it started to get out of hand and I knew I'd never be able to keep it up and I stopped cold-turkey. I've purchased a few, here and there, mostly in used book stores. I think I've got enough that I haven't read yet to keep me entertained for a long time. :)

message 6: by Travis (new)

Travis Bird (travisbird) | 14 comments They surely are proliferating. I haven't read any of the New Frontier material. Is it completely separate from any TV series?

message 7: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) There are a couple Next Generation characters, but for the most part it's a whole new ship and crew. Along with a couple new types of alien.
First half dozen are pretty decent reads, but there was a trilogy with the series where the author started doing a lot of 'Oh, aren't I clever!' bits and I started to lose interest.

Thanks, Travis. There's definitely a variation of quality in TV spin-off yarns; some are beauties...some are shockers.

Somewhere I found a book by Michael Okuda (I think)which gives a timeline of the whole Star trek universe but I can't remember the title. It would be a real help in sorting out the continuity of the various series. Does anyone know of it?

message 9: by Ian (new)

Ian Coomber | 15 comments If I see any at car boot sales, or in charity shops I normally pick anything up cheaply, the only ones I specifically buy are the DS9 continuation novels. 'The Left Hand of Desitny' and 'A Stitch In Time' being my favourite, as they are written by the actors who played the novels protagonist characters in the series.

The best books I've read though have to be Greg Cox's Khan novels.

message 10: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 12 comments I mostly read the Original Series and Next Generation. I have read many over the years. The real problems is some are so very, very good---and some you wished you'd saved your money. I do still pick up a used copy ow and again. I still have a backlog of unread books--so I am not planning to run out for a several months yet.

This may be old news now....but Wikipedia has an excellent listing of all of the Trek tie-in novels. Including the Bantam books and well...every series that I have ever heard about.

Elizabeth (checkedoutforear) | 24 comments I like the new Next Generation books and have read and own quite a few Original Series and TNG. Titan and Stargazer are a nice new look on some familiar storylines. I have read a couple of New Frontier and Captain's Table and they are pretty good as well.

message 13: by Colin (new)

Colin | 57 comments TOS all the way!!!

Actually I have read books from several different series and they all have their good points and bad points, but I've been reading TOS for over three decades, and it will always be my favorite.

message 14: by Leland (new)

Leland (lelandhw) | 32 comments I haven't read any of the Core of Engineers series yet or the Titan series. But I've read a little bit of everything else. I'm trying to concentrate on TOS right now though...but there's so many temptations.

message 15: by Bill (new)

Bill (kernos) | 15 comments I have every ST book written, that I know about (some 580 of them). I read all series.

message 16: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) I read a little bit of everything.
Though, by the time Voyager had books coming out, I was starting to lose interest. Don't think I've read any 'Enterprise' books.
I got back into the habit with 'New Frontier' and 'Vanguard'.

message 17: by James (new)

James | 4 comments I am really enjoying the books that feature new crews/ships, particularly Star Trek: Vanguard (a crew of a Space station in the 23rd Century) and Star Trek: Titan (following Captain Riker and his crew in the 24th Century after Nemesis).

I have mostly read the TOS series.

message 18: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (checkedoutforear) | 24 comments I just finished Unwanted by Kirsten Beyer and also read Full Circle. Both are Voyager books set after the TV series ended. I recommend both of these to everyone, even if you didn't like Voyager. These were extremely well thought out and little Miral and the Borg are in them!!

message 19: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) been curious about the Voyager books set post-TV. I'll have to give them a look.

Right now I've been tracking down and reading the set of four 'Section 31' books they did. While it spotlights the secret orgainization that showed up in DS9, each book is set during one of the four TV shows.

Bill (3illsweet) | 1 comments I've read TOS more than others, but am enjoying the DS9 Relaunch, and reading some TNG because I want to get to this Destiny Series that everyone raves about.

I kind of prefer the TOS ones. I think largely because I remember as a kid, before VCRs, and before we had ST movies and other shows, books were a great way of keeping the show alive in you imagination (kind of like how Doctor Who fans did with the old Target novels).

The best TOS novels were the ones that felt to me could have been movies, "bigger" than the show, and filling in details. I've enjoyed subsequent series noveils, but they don't feel as "big" to me...

btw, best source, besides Memory Alpha or Memory Beta, is this great site: http://www.well.com/~sjroby/lcars/

message 21: by Tara (new)

Tara | 9 comments Right now, I have started reading the new Star Trek Academy books. I've never read star trek books before. I love Voyager, but after hearing thT they essentially killed Janeway, I think I will read Next Generation books.

message 22: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 1 comments It may be sinful to admit it in this group but I grew up watching TOS and the associated movies and love them! However, I have never read any of the books. With so many out there, how would you all recommend that I start so that I can get good and hooked on the novels for years to come? I read both books bought online and on a kindle so any medium is good by me.
Thanks!

Well, at the risk of sounding very "old school", I recommend the TOS novelizations by James Blish: Star Trek 1 through Star Trek 12 .

They were my first introduction to Star Trek books over thirty years ago, and they still have a place in my heart.

Love the Blish novelizations. Read those in the dark ages, before VHS.

message 25: by Infinite (new)

Infinite | 6 comments I agree the Blish Novelizations were excellent! my first foray into star trek was the TOS novel Star Trek Enterprise by Vonda Mcintyre (spelling?), I was sorta enjoying it but not completely hooked then I read, Ice Trap by L.A. Graf (one of my favorite star trek writers), and I was a little more hooked, I then watched Star Trek 2009, when it came out, and I got really interested I reread all of the star trek books I owned ( about six at that time from a library sale), and the rest is trekkie history. Now I get most of them from my used book store, they have a pretty good selection usually, although I purchased the first corps of engineers book on Amazon after accidentally reading the third first. So far I like all the star trek novels,(I've read over 80), my favorites series though are New frontier, S.C.E, and TOS.

message 27: by Michael (new)

Michael (ghosterwriter1899) I mostly read TOS books. I've watched the show since I was 6 yrs old and I've just got a nostalgic connection with it. Besides, it was the series that started it all. I like TNG books next but they often just don't have the same feel to them as the TOS books do. I like the excitement associated with the earlier days of the Federation. I also like the Lost Years books and the Vanguard series.

message 29: by Richard (new)

Richard White (richard_c_white) | 1 comments Well, I'm fond of the Corps of Engineers books, but I have to admit, I wrote one of the stories and had another one accepted before the line was cancelled. *grin*

I've mostly read TOS, Vangard, and some of the Post-DS9 books (that goes across all the series, TNG, DS9, Voyager - basically picking up after the Dominion War and continuing forward.)

I did enjoy Articles of the Federation too.

message 30: by Christina (new)

Christina | 1 comments I read TOS and The New Frontier series. I am going to read Destiny at some point and maybe Titan but for now just those two.

message 31: by Sinda (new)

Sinda Quietus (superwholockedtrekacrossthestars) | 13 comments I've recently been enjoying reading a few TNG books because that's the series I'm currently obsessed with.

message 32: by Jody (new)

Jody | 7 comments I read anything with the DS9 characters in it. By far my favorite ST TV series with some of the best characters in the ST universe.

message 33: by Sinda (new)

Sinda Quietus (superwholockedtrekacrossthestars) | 13 comments Now I'm reading the Deep Space Nine books. I'm trying to read them in order, and I just read #3.

message 34: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) Just got 'Station Rage', a DS9 novel at a library book sale, very entertaining, and it's got me in the mood to read more Trek.

Going to have to hit amazon this weekend.

Sinda Quietus (superwholockedtrekacrossthestars) | 13 comments My dad has this GIANT collection of Star Trek books in the basement. There's literally a wall full of them. I don't think I'd have to buy a Star Trek book anytime soon.

message 36: by Tara (new)

Tara | 9 comments I'm reading the Next Generation series Slings and Arrows. I don't have a lot of time for reading, and these books are pretty short. They take place before First Contact.
