Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Our next chunky read will be The Far Pavilions by M M Kaye. I am thinking that a start date of February 27. If anyone wants to lead the discussion please let me know. Also, who is in?

message 2: by Rebecca (new)

Gillian | 618 comments I have it on the shelf and am planning on joining in.

message 5: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments That is awesome!

message 6: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (meg9000) | 84 comments I've been wanting to read this, so I will also try to put it in my reading schedule. Despite its length, I don't think it will take nearly the time to read that Truman has. :D

I was hoping this was available on the Kindle, but it doesn't look like it is. I'll see if I can find a cheap copy somewhere. So I will call myself a "maybe" for now. :o)

Update: just found an old 1979 paperback copy on Paperback Swap, so I ordered that. So I guess I'm a yes. :o)

message 8: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce I am in. I read that book years ago and loved it, so it is time for a reread.

message 9: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I got mine from Paperbackswap too. It is two volumes!

message 10: by Shay (new)

Shay | 284 comments Did anyone see the miniseries when it first came out? I had to read the book before I was allowed to watch the miniseries and I loved both.

message 11: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce I did, Shay! It had Ben Cross as Ash and Amy Irving as Anjuli. It came out in 1984 and it also had Omar Sharif in it.

message 12: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments How long do the chunky reads last?

message 13: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments We usually read about 100 pages a week, I am not sure how many pages this book is. So I would say 8-10 weeks depending also on how fast we read.

I will look up the mini series.

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Great!

message 24: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments I just got my book yesterday. It doesn't seem as bad or chunky as I thought it would be. I'm excited to begin because it's it's not a book I would have picked up on my own.

message 25: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments When I got my book I thought the same thing, then the second book arrived! It was divided into two books!!

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
Mine came all in one copy. It is a good sized, larger than normal. mass market type paperpack, 960 pages. I just checked to make sure it is all there, and the last chapter is Chapter 68, so I'm pretty sure that is the whole thing. :o)

message 27: by Megan (new)

Megan M | 267 comments I just picked up my book from the library! I am in. This is my first chunky read and I have to admit I am a little intimidated; however, I only leave my house in the winter to go to work, so I should be good to go.

message 28: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Don't be intimidated, we really don't bite and it is a very nice group of women!

message 29: by Megan (new)

Megan M | 267 comments Ha Meg, thanks for the motivation! I am looking forward to reading with you ladies.

message 30: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments And we look forward to having you.

message 31: by Collin (new)

Collin | 197 comments I would love to join you guys as well! It will be my first chunky read too, but the book looks amazing, so I'm really excited. I was not able to find the book at any local stores, so I ordered it from amazon. I should be here in plenty of time.

I'm very happy to see two first-time Chunky Read readers joining us! Looking forward to a wonderful discussion.

message 34: by Collin (new)

Collin | 197 comments Thanks for the welcome. I think it's a great opportunity to read something I probably would have never known about. Only wish I had found goodreads sooner :) Can't wait for my book to arrive.

message 35: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Chaney (carrie_chaney) Originally I had planned to read this one via Kindle. It was available one day and then gone the next. Odd! I couldn't find a copy nearby so I just ordered mine today...hopefully it shows up soon! (APO mail can be troublesome sometimes.)

message 36: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I hope you get it. If not, you can always join at any time.

message 37: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Chaney (carrie_chaney) My guess is that, with any luck, it will be here by the 28th, so I won't be too far behind.

message 38: by Amanda (last edited Feb 09, 2011 06:30AM) (new)

Amanda This sounds like it would be a great read!!

I've had it on my TBR list for a while and really want to pick it up. So I want to say I can join in...but I have a big trip coming up in April and lots of preparations to occupy my time before then. Then once April 15 rolls around I won't really have computer access. I don't want to say I'm in and then not participate. Just wanted to wish you all luck with it and say I hope you enjoy :)

message 39: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Well if you change your mind we would love to have you.

message 40: by Beth (new)

Beth | 163 comments I've ordered the book and am scrambling to finish what I'm reading now....looking forward to being part of another chunky read!

message 41: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Yay, that is great!

message 42: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments I'm going to try and juggle both of the books. The second one for February and this one...I'll see how it goes. I also teach and I am working on my PhD. I rarely sleep.

message 43: by Megan (new)

Megan M | 267 comments For anyone that is still undecided, I read the first part and am really enjoying the read. Meg, thanks for setting this up! I would have never read this book and can't wait to discuss.

message 44: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I am so happy!
