Carrie Chaney (carrie_chaney) The book definitely slows down toward the end. As Ash's focus shifts from Juli and India to England and his duty with the Raj, my attention started to drift quite a bit. At the end, it's worth the struggle. But I sympathize with you guys! There were a few really dry chapters in there.

Irene | 4579 comments O, so glad that I am not the only one ready to end this book. I got behind once again and spent much of the weekend playing catch-up. I read about 300 pages in about 3 days and am now through chapter 65. I feared that part of my problem was that I had forced a marathon. But, all the fighting and bloody battles are just hard to read in long stretches. I like the cultural pieces and warfare is the same everywhere, only the weapons change. Details about the uniforms and the knives and so on was tiresome. What kept me reading, the promise of finishing.

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments I'm so glad that y'all (I'm from Texas) found the website useful. I spent hours just looking around. The reading was a little hard for me as well...I think that this section of the book could have been edited a little more...some sentences taken out maybe.

Sharon A. (sharona826) | 172 comments I had a hard time slogging through that section as well, but the end is oh so worth it.

I wasn't about to give up after already getting through 600+ pages!

Beth | 163 comments I hate to say this, but I'm ready for this book to end.....I'm curious as to how it ends, but I'm ready to get there!!

message 256: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I am really dragging through the end too. I think the book could have been without the last 200 pages+ I seldom find that I hate the endings to books.

message 257: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments I can't deal with reading this book anymore...I need a little break and then I can go back and read the end.

message 258: by Collin (new)

Collin | 197 comments I'm starting chapter 63 (I'm behind, as we were supposed to read through chapter 65 for yesterday), and Ash is in Kabul and it seems that no one will listen to him. I liked reading that he had decided it was time to leave the Guides and get on with his life with Juli. I wonder how long this "mission" will survive in Afganistan, and what part Ash will play in it's success or demise. He seems dead set on the idea of paying the soldiers in order to make things better.

The raft scene is still with me. Bringing Wigram's body back and the description of the smell of the coffin after it took a bullet while going down the river was heartbreaking.

Also heartbreaking was reading of Ash and Zarin saying goodbye. I wonder if that really was the last time they see eachother.

My book has 68 chapters, does everyone else's?

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments What I thought was crazy is that I had taken a sociology class in the 90's on Marriage and traditions. Well, one of the topics was Suttee and we watched parts of this in class. I was having a bit of dejavu and it all came back to me just now...lol. We just finished testing week here in all the high schools and my brain is a little fried. I will be finishing up the novel in a couple of weeks.

message 260: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Collin, I have 68 chapters too.

message 261: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce I have finished the book and though I enjoyed it (for the second time), I did feel the same about the book's length. It would have been perfect being perhaps two to three hundred pages shorter.

It went in and out of being riveting and I think the author did manage to capture the times and her characters quite well.

message 262: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I am picking this up again after a long break. It does drag in parts but I have enjoyed Indian smells, sights and culture.

Where in the book are you? I am about to start reading again...I'm determined to finish. I had final exams so I stopped for a bit.

message 264: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Sandra I was at the start of the wedding procession. But need to backtrack a bit to jog the old memory. How about you?

message 265: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I have 1 1/2 chapters to completion. I am glad you are both picking it up again!

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments I'm am in the middle of the escape...that was so crazy

message 267: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Did everyone or anyone finish?

message 268: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I will finish but am still plugging along.

message 269: by Collin (new)

Collin | 197 comments I finally finished. Although there were slow stretches that I struggled through, I must say I really loved the way Kaye brings the story to a close. It will stick with me for quite a while.

I finished and was happy with the ending.

message 271: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments Yes, finished several weeks ago, and very glad to finally have it done. By the end, it dragged for me.

message 272: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments I'm almost done...it dragged for me too...it was so disappointing because it was so good in the beginning.

message 273: by Sharon A. (new)

Sharon A. (sharona826) | 172 comments I also finished several weeks ago. I thought it dragged through the last portion, but then picked up again right at the end.

I'm on the lookout for more of her books; albeit shorter ones!

I want to read Trade Wind, but it's out of print.
Trade Wind

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Paperbackswap has it.

message 276: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Chaney (carrie_chaney) I'm glad that it seems like most everyone is getting through! I loved the ending. For me, it made up for the sluggish section 3/4 of the way through.

message 277: by Carla (new)

Carla | 1 comments i realize this is an OLD posting, but i just have to say that i was TRULY surprised at just how much i enjoyed this chunky read. it was HARD to get into it, but once the action started...after the boy became an orphan, it was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to put down. Truly enjoyed this selection.

message 278: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I am glad you enjoyed it Carla. I gave the book to my mother when I finished it and she had the same reaction that you had.
