Stephen (havan) | 151 comments I still recall my sixth grade English teacher telling us that the book we'd be reading in her class was old but still great.

I do recall loving it. But I don't recall the title or the author or even if it was really a text book or just a regular book.

The book followed a family, father, mother, son, and daughter. That were relocating via car across country. They travelled, with a travel trailer, from New England to (I think) California. The parents had decided to make the trip an extended educational experience and stopped in a number of places along the way.

I think the father was a painter and the mother was a writer.

One of their first stops I recall was in New York City and the father painted street portaits and they all went skating at Rockafeller Center. I seem to recall a stop in the south (planation maybe?) and at the Grand Canyon.

As I said the teacher called the book old when we read it so it was most likely published in the mid to late 1950's

Any idea what it might have been?

Sirvantes | 180 comments "Runaway Home" is a sixth grade reader written by Elizabeth Coatsworth. It was published in the forties and fifties, and was part of the Alice and Jerry basal reading series. It features the Harding family: Mom, Dad, Mark, Lucy and Jim. Yes, father was a portrait and landscape painter in Maine, but was having trouble making ends meet. A relative with an apple orchard in Washington state invites them to join him, so they sell their house, buy a trailer, and travel across country, and adventures ensue. Illustrations by Gustaf Tenngren.

Stephen, I don't see it in the Goodreads' database. Does anyone else? You can manually add it if it's not here:

Stephen (havan) | 151 comments Thanks I've added all the information that I could google on the book and have even ordered an old copy from a source on Amazon. When it arrives, I'll scan in the cover.

Wonderful, Stephen. Thank you. And, when it shows up (there is sometimes a caching issue) I'll shelve it here. I'm glad you found it and can get a copy.
