SOS: Serious Overload of Series discussion

The series is supposed to be UF. However the book is written as a PNR book. I gotta say, I love loved the beginning but was let down by the end, it was too PNRish for me. Not sure what that says about me and HEAs. Here is my review. http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... I do have a spoiler, but before I get to the spoilerish part I use the old fashioned way of marking the spoilers.
Thank you very much for answering, Regina. =) I've read a few UF novels like that. I'll definitely read your review-minus the spoilers-tonight. Thanks!
mmmmm, reading it after I posted, I guess we all know where the "couple" is headed, but maybe wait to read the review until after you read the book. :)
Is the only spoiler not labeled the one about where the "couple" is heading? If so, I should be okay. I already read the blurb for Shadowflame.
The blurb for Shadowflame ticked me off -- bc I read that before I read Queen of Shadows. But oh well, I guess it is no big secret that in PNR themed books the boy and girl end up together. Yes, the unlabeled hints about the ending are not anything you wouldn't know -- i.e. she is an empath, he helps her, etc. I just didnt want to ruin it for you. But seeing where you are in the book it is safe.
I hate when they do that with blurbs - give away previous book bits. :\ Cat Adams' Bloodsinger books did the same.
Yeah and for Shadowflame it was the first freaking sentance! I am not going to look at Bloodsinger. Good to know to avoid the spoilerage (even though I have no idea what series it is tied to!). LOL.

Yes, ..."I agree that it's logical for the hero & heroine to end up together in a PNR...but this book is marketed as UF & HEA's in UF are the exception.
The spoiler in Shadowflame pissed me off as well. Since then, a librarian put the whole blurb under a spoiler tag so I guess that's good, right?
@ Steph: Ugh! I couldn't even get through Blood Song. For it to have such a beautiful cover, the book was so terrible & boring for me. It was my first DNF of 2011.
I believe it was NU who did it. If I remember right, bc I was complaining so loudly about it. And you are right. I was shocked by the spoiler. I did not expect it. Weird thing, HTML tags (including spoiler tags) don't show up on the GR App. The tagging is visible and then so are the words meant to be hidden. Steph thanks for the links. That series has a huge variety of reviews.
I made a comment on GR feedback group about the HMTL not working. Hopefully they'll fix it. It drives my OCDemon crazy. LOL!Yeah, as you can see even with us here. Lethal DNF, but I liked them.
I like it when books hit people so differently. It is kind of like a challenge. Steph I am glad you let them know!
Me too. But, I like finding out the reviews are all over the place after I've read it. Otherwise, the reviews have a tendency to push a book further down my TBR list, even though it may be one I may/not like. Oh, I couldn't resist on that one! No doubt, HAD to comment. LOL!
Steph wrote: ":( Sorry. I enjoyed the first two."Eh. *shrugs* It's not your fault. And I didn't buy it-therefore I didn't waste money on it-so I hold no grudges.
Regina, I agree. I enjoy that so many different people have different opinions on books. There are books that I liked that my friends hated. Hell, there are books that I liked that make me think "WTF am I smoking?" Like Shiver. I don't know why I like it...but I do. Leaking womb & all. ☺
OCD forced you to do it! Well it is a good thing. :)The mixed review and doomed series label encouraged me to read Anita Blake. Yup I am that kind of masochist and rebel. I am only on 6 though but I love it.
Shiver Lethal? Oh boy. Well I guess someone has to like the books others hate. I forced myself through Shiver, but it could have been the narration. In the end I wanted them all to turn into wolves forever. But I do think the idea was interesting and the cover is beautiful.
Lol @ turn into wolves forever. For some reason, the book just made me really depressed, whether it was the writing or events, I don't know. And I'm going onto Obsidian Butterfly and still loving the series. I also have a soft spot for Edward but whether that will change later on I'm not sure.
Surprisingly I'm actually reading a non UF or PNR book at the moment *gasps*
I'm on
, which has a pretty spectacular length and the first historical fiction I've read. I just had an urge and shockingly enjoying it :)
I liked parts of Shiver and I am familiar with the area, I thought the author did a good job of conveying the cold and changes of season. Outlander is an amazing and beautiful story.
Aww, that it is. In fact I'm over half way and have barely put it down, I almost didn't sleep. I love books like that :)
I liked Shiver too. I remember commenting at the time that I couldn't point to any one reason why. It just touched me on some visceral level. Mostly it reminded me of poetry; you either feel it or you don't. (Of course, that insight was probably helped along by Stiefvater's use of Rilke's poetry in the narrative.LOL.)
Josie, Laura will be so proud. She's another big fan of that series and I've since promised to read it this year.
I'm about 1/2 through
. Tammy Jo's a magnet for trouble and Bryn's a hot wizard, always a fun read.I'm on part3 of
- road trip is about to get underway. The narrator (same as Kitty books) does an awful job w/Ivy's voice, she makes her sound like a tranny. I'm also working into the mix my re-read of
in prep for #3.Oh, and when I finished
, Silver's last book in the Otherkin trilogy, I was kinda bummed b/c it left somethings open, while wrapping up the who and why of their brother's death. So, I popped over to her site and see she's starting another trilogy or series that sort-of continues on. It'll be released in Sep 2011. Just FYI for those that have/will be read(ing) that trilogy.
Josie wrote: "And I'm going onto Obsidian Butterfly and still loving the series. And you'll meet a guy called Olaf who scared the pants off me, I just wanted kill him so I'd feel safe again. Love the way Anita deals with him though -she tugs that tiger by the tail.
I've read
which was very short but disturbing allegory.Tried
which was a lot different to what I expected and made more sense after I'd finished it and found it wasn't really for me.Yesterday, I read
which totally reminded me of Shadow Game. The cover's very striking but I had a bit of trouble with the story.Today, I started
while waiting for I Am Number Four to start at the cinema. FYI, the movie is so much better than the book. I'm struggling with Tithe, it's kind of dull and a bit weird but she's just gone down the rabbit hole (it's very Alice in Wonderland) so I'm hoping it'll get more interesting now.
Steph wrote: "Josie, Laura will be so proud. She's another big fan of that series and I've since promised to read it this year."Yay! She's right, I'm about 50 pages from the end and will definitely read the rest of the series :)
Steph wrote: "...Oh, and when I finished , Silver's last book in the Otherkin trilogy, I was kinda bummed b/c it left somethings open, while wrapping up the who and why of their brother's death..."
Thanks Steph! I'm absolutely going to finish that trilogy and will read the new one when it comes out :D
Amy or "Ames" wrote: "

Thanks for the warning! Tbh, so far I would say for me the goriest one is 'The Laughing Corpse'.
Lol @ Olaf! I'll help you hunt him down once I've finished (assuming Anita hasn't done it already, which really is a silly assumption).
I watched I Am Number Four the other night and I really enjoyed it! I haven't read the book but I'd definitely recommend the film. Right in the middle of a really intense bit, some guy burped behind me. It was the funniest thing ever (well to me) and I laughed for about half of the film! :D

LOL!
I love how Hamilton writes truly scary characters and wow the gore is shocking and thrilling. It is done in a way that is really creative. Laughing Corpse was my goriest too until now, I just finished
and that was the goriest so far. I loved this book and gave it 5 stars. I loved the relationships and friendships in this book and I loved Anita's insight into herself.
@Amy. I felt the same way about
. The concept was interesting, though done before. The flow of the story was off and I had a little trouble connecting with the characters. I recently read
and I enjoyed it a lot more. Darkness' romantic focus is on a different couple, but the plot still centers around the Offspring as a group. Zoe and Brand make an interesting couple, both loners for differing reasons. I liked the fact that Amy & Lucas' relationship was touched upon instead of being ignored in favor of the new couple.
So I have a very heavy work week and it hasn't given me much reading time (cabbing it home from work so no train ride to read and just collapsing into bed). So I am still reading
but I am really enjoying it. I just downloaded from the library
which has the pre-quel to Iron Duke, I hope to read that this week too. The good thing about a heavy work week is that I have more audio time listening, so I finished
and just loved it. I am still glowing from the book. I know that book started the downward spiral for many Anita people, but for me it was the first 5 stars I gave to the series. I see alot of my GR friends gave it 4 stars. Just blew me away. Everything I love in UF -- dark story, dark inner struggles (Anita struggles with how esily she kills people, lol -- not funny but in the context of the story it is), there are many laugh out loud moments. And I loved her honest struggle between the two men in her life she loves. Kinda what I wish Riley Jensen would do or feel -- I don't mind the bed hopping in her books at all, but I just wish there was more inner thought to it or struggle or perhaps consequences -- with Anita (at least right now in the series where I am at) there is. And the horror element was just fantastic. I am now also listening on audio to
. Something happened to the first part, it was corrupted in the download and I am at work, I just skipped ahead to the 2nd part and I don't feel like I missed anything!
Finished
. 2 stars and here's why. The mythology of O'Hara's world confused me. It confused me a lot. I don't know if she was attempting a slow discovery process, but it didn't work. We have CHaPR, The Department, The Guild, The Council. What are they? How are they related? Who is a member of each? I still wasn't sure when I reached the end of the book. Then I found the glossary at the back and boy, I wished I'd known it was there. It did a better job of explaining things than the narrative did. As for Antoinette and Christian's relationship, it was resolved way to quickly. Antoinette went from hatred to sex in 0.5 seconds. Okay, admittedly, the first time can be justifiably explained by other events. But not the subsequent times, especially given her reaction to a later event proves she hasn't totally lost her prejudice against the Aeturnus.
Currently reading:
. I'm barely into it, so no initial opinion yet. Other than isn't the cover a little misleading. The book starts in 1874 and the guy on the cover is a little Indiana Jonesesque. Not a complaint, just wondering if this struck anybody else?
The cover for Warrior is certainly Indiana Jonesish. I think the story is, too, except for the time of its setting. I really enjoyed it. Some people on SBTB thought
reminded them of "The Mummy" with Brenden Frasier.
I'm currently reading
. Finished the first two books, and am VERY impressed by how much better this one is. The quality of the writing has improved, it's leaner and tighter all round, and her world-building has gotten a lot sharper. I was on the verge of abandoning the series, but this book has breathed fresh air into it and I'm just off to order the rest of them.
Ah...and a few others from my TBR list. Heh.

Good to know, Moss. I read book #1 in the series and actually really enjoyed it but even so I got the second one on my shelf I never quite got myself to start it, not sure why. I'm currently reading
which I really enjoy so far, even though Kiyo annoys me even more than in the first instalment.I have also just started
.
Agree with you there Kerstin, Kiyo is a...er... wimp I guess is nice PG word to describe him. Dorian (is that his name? it's been a while since I read it) is much more interesting and a king so I know who I'd choose. And also (this is a spoiler for Thorn Queen), (view spoiler)
Daffodil wrote: "@Amy. I felt the same way about

@Josie: I'm a Kiyo-hater too but I've been spoiled for #3 and it's not good news. I won't say any more but 4 weeks to go until I get my copy and I'm less enthusiastic about reading it now.
@Kerstin, hope you love
I thought it was just terrific, I'm up to #3 now.@SandraJ, interesting about
cause I've got that this month in a challenge, I'll look out for Brendan. LOL.
Amy or "Ames" wrote: "I know! He's a coward. I hope he dies a fiery death."Tehe! So do I!!!! ::cackles wildly::
Maybe he'll be a red herring until the end of #4 when Dorian will swoop in, decapitate the b*****d and marry Eugenie. The End.
Yes! Yes!! I vote for that!! We're a diplomacy!!!! It means something!!!!!!!See now, Richelle Mead doesn't even have to think about it now, she can just throw in a sex scene and it's all HEA. EVERYBODY WINS!!!

But, I'm so happy to see you had the same thoughts on it as me. Now I know it wasn't the reading order, just a not-so-hot read. I may eventually read #2, just to see if it's any better, but not rushing to it.
Josie & Ames - So funny! I just finished my re-read and forgot how much Kiyo bugged me. What a douche for not .... (see Josie's spoiler in #609). I'm totally on Dorian's team. I'm anxious to see how things play out in the next one.
I've just started
about a transgendered teen and I can already tell I'm gonna be yellin' at his dad throughout. The story is told from his sister's POV. I'm still pluggin' through
on audiobook, just not finding time to listen at the moment. Augh :\
Oh I'm anxious too Steph! Hope it works out our way (i.e. the right way) ;)I have finally got hold of
and will be starting it fairly soonish, so hope it's a good series. If you're on number 9, then it has to be a good sign! I hope it's not because it's bad and only due to lack of time :)
Cheering along in hopes for "our way". HeheNah, it's definitely b/c of lack of time to listen. The series gets better with each book, I think. Hope you enjoy it.
@Kerstin -
was my favorite "school" read. Hope you enjoy it! @Sandra - Are you on
? I'm reading it too, partly because it's an "X" book, and I needed one for a challenge. Oh wait, I joined the challenge because I realized I had an "X" book to read...Halfway through
and enjoying it. It might be a little more laid-back than the others so far, but still just as good :)

A question for those who've read it: Is it PNR or UF or both? I'm only 50 or so pages in & right now I'm not sure which way it's going to go.
