I think World War Z would have been better suited as a mini series or tv show, but now that The Walking Dead has come out, I guess the best option would be as a movie. I can't think whose character Brad Pitt would play..

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments The last I heard, the script has been through a lot of changes. I remember reading somewhere that they fiddled with the premise to make the narrator more of a protagonist and gave him a family he was escaping with or something, but I can't quickly find the link, so take that with a grain of salt. The script has finally gotten out of development hell and there's a lot more chaff to sift through since the last time I searched.

Wikipedia has a good basic rundown: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wa...

ETA: Oh, and I think Brad Pitt could play Todd Wainio, but I believe he's going to be the fleshed out narrator? Think I read that somewhere? What baffles me is who Milo Ventimiglia will be playing.

Incidentally, if you have the opportunity to listen to the audio adaptation, you should. It's got a ridiculously awesome cast, though they had to cut some parts.

Jeff (jkeene) | 95 comments Nikki wrote: "Cool, Jeff. I look forward to hearing what you thought of it. :) It was a straight-to-paperback release, so if you can't get it at a library, it should be relatively inexpensive."

I pulled down the sample chapter one for Kindle last night, it looked quite promising. Decent world setup, though the expository globs slowed down the dialog a bit. One thing that dropped me out of the reading experience was a rather bad punctuation typo about a third of the way in to the chapter.

How was the rest of the book for typos?

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments There are a few, but it's not horrible overall. I know what you mean; I've encountered my share of books where an apparent lack of copy editing have thrown me right out of the book. (I say "apparent" because I once came across a blog post that pointed out that authors are allowed to write "stet" and that mistakes will be left in even if they're clearly wrong.)

Edited to clarify: I am fairly sure there are less than 5 such errors.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments *snort*

Oh dear gods, this is too funny.

Let's try not to derail the thread too much, though. Last thing we need is yet another go around about "that book".

Aleix Dorca | 10 comments Wow! I REALLY don't understand what just happened here? Did I miss something Kevin?

Sorry Aleix. It's sort of an inside joke. Best to ignore it and move on.

Kara (sterlink) | 67 comments Am looking forward to The Wise Man's Fear (*squints eyes @ Kevin*)

The final installment of the Magister's Trilogy,Legacy of Kings. Also The Desert Spear in paperback.

Some others are...
The Emerald Atlas
Heartless
The Heroes
and I may give The Lost Gate a go.

If you hate me for The Wise Man's Fear, you're going to hate me for The Lost Gate. I think Orson Scott Card has lost his touch and has done nothing good since about 2005, when he stopped Tales of Alvin Maker, and Ender Series. Those two work are his best, all the other novel he has done is great. I have read a lot of work, but he has been on the bandwagon what is popular today, which for me does not work.

message 68: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments Kevin, the purpose of this thread is for people to say what they are excited about in 2011... Not for people to tell them why they shouldn't be excited about it. Please... Give it a break?

message 69: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 67 comments Kevin wrote: "If you hate me for The Wise Man's Fear, you're going to hate me for The Lost Gate. I think Orson Scott Card has lost his touch..."

Did you read it already?

Don't hate you... don't even know you.

message 70: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I did not say a thing about Th Wise Man's Fear, I mainly said what my opinion was on Orson Scott Card was, okay. So don't hate me for having The Wise Man's Fear as a side to start a conversation. Lastly, Kara is the one that brought up about The Wise Man's Fear and me. I am giving my point of view on a different book, don't hate me if I am not positive. Life is not always positive.

message 71: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments No one is saying they hate you! Wow. I'm saying the thread is called "What are new-in-2011 books are you looking forward to reading?", not "What are new-in-2011 books are you not looking forward to other people looking forward to reading?". I don't care who brought up WMF, this isn't about that in the least bit.

When you are on your "My Books" page, look near the bottom, and there will be a "sort" window with a scrollable checkbox, click on it and you can scroll up to "Pub. Date" among others.

And, Stephen Erikson's coming The Crippled God, the finale and book #10 of The Malazan Book of the Fallen

That's the plan. Erikson may write other stuff in that world, but the main Malazan Book of the Fallen sequence is being wrapped up.

Ian C. Esslemont's series is still ongoing too, but that's also a side project of sorts.

Guess it's time to finally start in on it, then. Didn't want to jump into another series that was ongoing.

Me too. I'm waiting for the series to be completed, so I can read them all together.

I have the first two, but I've only read the first one so far. No, it wasn't as good as Erikson. Not by a long shot. I've heard that the second one is better, but I haven't tried it yet.

It's still fun to visit Malazan though, even if it's different. I'll get back to them eventually.

I wonder how this one is going to be done.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments Dammit, Kevin. Now I will hate you. Thanks a lot for that. *glare*

(Ok, I don't really hate anyone, just saying... )

@Michael - I can't believe Butcher was so spoilery in his interview. I woulda been very annoyed with him if I'd heard that interview, since I'm only up to book 11. *glares at Kevin some more*

message 92: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments Thanks for the spoiler Kevin! Hopefully I can scrub it from my brain before I find time to read the books.

message 93: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Not really a spoiler, if Jim Butcher said it in a interview from the New York Comic Con on youtube. If you look on Wikipedia, it even has a little more extend plot. I am not trying to give more than anything that has not been released out on the internet.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments So because it's been spoiled elsewhere, it's not really a spoiler?

Well, I haven't read Changes, and I haven't heard any of the other spoilers, so you just spoiled me.

So just edit your post and indicate that it's a spoiler instead of arguing about it. It's not that hard.

message 95: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) The point is that Jim has said it himself, okay!

Have you read the first line of Changes at least?

Sorry!

message 97: by Lara Amber (new)

Lara Amber (laraamber) | 664 comments Well for me I remembered hearing something about it a while back, so I'm not upset about the spoiler, but I've only read up to White Night. So anything after that would a spoiler to me.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments Kevin wrote: "The point is that Jim has said it himself, okay!"

Yes, I got that when Michael said it. And, as I said to Michael, I would've been pissed off at Butcher if I'd heard it from his lips. And now I'm pissed off at him, anyway, by extension.

And, no, I haven't read even the first line of Changes. I haven't read any of book 11, either.

What I don't get is why you're going to argue the point instead of just editing your post. But I should know better by now. *sigh*

I kind of already did, the fact is that what has happened has stock on his head. I'm sorry that you have not read Changes, it is like not having read the sixth Harry Potter, but before the seventh came out. How could anyone after that not know the end, even if one has not read it. Changes is that big of a book in the series, it does not matter you have read it or not, it will get out somehow. You basic point is that you have not read Changes, that is the bridge and gap that you need. Changes is just one of those books in a series that has so many that connects the plot.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments I kind of already did, the fact is that what has happened has stock on his head.

I don't even know what this is supposed to mean. If you mean you kind of already marked the spoiler - no, you haven't.

I'm sorry that you have not read Changes, it is like not having read the sixth Harry Potter, but before the seventh came out. How could anyone after that not know the end, even if one has not read it. Changes is that big of a book in the series, it does not matter you have read it or not, it will get out somehow.

Well, for me, it hasn't gotten out until now - so, somehow, I've managed to avoid spoilers since now. Part of this is because I've avoided thread which specifically discussed Changes, and part of it is because other people have had the decency to not blurt out what happened.

Sort of like my coworkers who haven't finished Harry Potter yet, and don't know all of what happens, and I simply refrain from telling them what's happened. And they have managed to not be spoiled, yet.

Don't feel sorry for me - just be more considerate in the future, and mark your damn spoiler.

You basic point is that you have not read Changes, that is the bridge and gap that you need. Changes is just one of those books in a series that has so many that connects the plot.

Well, of course I plan to read it eventually. It's not like I have the intention of reading book 13 without reading book 12. My point is that I've only read up through book 10, and am simply not up to that point yet.
