You Can Only Take 5 CDs With You to the Deserted Island. Which Ones Do You Choose?
Does the island have electricity?
Aynge wrote, Do you even have five CDs that you can listen to over and over and over again?
Yes. More than 5, actually. But I'd be happy with the following 5:
1. The Rolling Stones, Exile on Main Street
2. The Who, Who's Next
3. Miles Davis, Bitches' Brew
4. Kraftwerk, Trans-Europe Express
5. John Coltrane, A Love Supreme

3. Dr. Ring-Ding and the Senior Allstars, Dandimite!
4. Johnny Cash, Live from Folsom Prison
5. Flogging Molly, Drunken Lullabies
1) Don't Kill Yourself by Drinking Battery Acid Mix2) Whatever Fiona Apple's new CD in 2011 is
3) Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago
4) The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me by Brand New
5) La Roux's self-titled release
Rolling Stones - "Exile on Main Street"
"New York Dolls"
"Who's Next" - The Who
"Leave Home" - Ramones
"Love It to Death" - Alice Cooper

I'd borrow five from Sarah Pi because she's not afraid to come over and say, "yo, give me back my CDs or give me the $60 to replace them."She could bring the rescue crew.

Clever!
Ok, here are five off the top of my head, but I reserve the right to edit:1. Aaron Copland-Appalachian Spring
2. Wilco-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
3. Stars of the Lid-Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid
4. Drive-by Truckers-Southern Rock Opera
5. eels-Blinking Lights (And Other Revelations)
I went for a mix of different types of music and longer albums.
Hmm...for today my list would be Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
The Band - The Last Waltz
Emmylou Harris - Red Dirt Girl
The Afghan Whigs - 1965
Neil YOung & Crazy Horse - Weld
Not convinced on the fifth spot, but the others are definite
I only really need the second disc of Weld. Cortez the Killer, Powderfinger, Like A Hurricane, all at their finest. As I said, I'm not convinced on that spot. Gus might have the right idea with some Coltrane.
Oh, I'm thinking of that noisy feedback disc from that set...is that one Arc or Arcweld or something?
Just 5? This is hard.Red-headed Stranger - Willie Nelson
Live at San Quentin - Johnny Cash
In the Jungle Groove - James Brown
Gumbo - Dr. John
Patience - Gilbert & Sullivan (I listen to this when I write and can't really function without it. Strange, I know.)
If compilations are allowed, I might go with one of the later anthology albums for Willie Nelson. Might also sub in a Hank Williams compilation for Dr. John. I'm not sure if LPs existed in Hank's day. I think those songs were just released as singles...Anyway, I stuck with the original album concept in this list.
i've only picked CDs i actually own.blue flamingo - 78 r.p.m.
the velvet underground & nico
eels - daisies of the galaxy
giant sand - *provisions*
the flaming lips - the soft bulletin
Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie WonderAbbey Road - The Beatles
The Nightfly - Donald Fagen
Moondance - Van Morrison
A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi
I'd love to have some Nick Drake, too, but Pink Moon is so short, I'd feel like I wasted an opportunity. Same with Time Out by Brubeck.
eels - daisies of the galaxyThis is an interesting pick, but I see from where you're coming. It's a great record, and possibly the most diverse and underrated eels disc. By the way, they opened with the title track from this disc from when I say the band in October.
The rest of you who don't properly appreciate the eels, carry on, and shame on you.
Nice lists. Especially Exile on Main St, Eels, and Wilco. Others are some I need to listen or relisten. I did this on fb for 25 but this is harder:radiohead - ok computer
the clash - london calling
Wilco - Summerteeth
John Coletrane - A Love Supreme
Mile Davis - Kind of Blue
I can't decide on a classical piece but would consider replacing Coletrane with a similar sprirtual classical CD.
Something is in my head about not taking an artist's best work with me but their 2nd best. You will appreciate it and then remember the best of the artist. It's like having 2X the music. Mile Davis , or dave brubeck or john coletrane or wilco comes to mind. Kind of Blue will remind me of so many other great CDs not just Mile Davis.

i chose it because it's one of e's most cheerful albums and has a lot of good memories attached to it. it is by far my favorite eels record.

Nil Lara - Nil LaraGrace - Jeff Buckley
The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion - The Black Crowes
Oh the Grandeur! - Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire
Escape - Journey
The Juliet Letters - Elvis Costello & the Brosky Quartet
1. Pink Floyd, Delicate Sound of Thunder2. Jimmy Buffett, Songs You Know by Heart
3. Marc Cohn, The Rainy Season
4. Saving Jane, One Girl Revolution
5. Don Henley, Actual Miles
First I would contact the ACLU, Amnesty International, and the Pope because limiting our choice to 5 is cruel and unusual punishment.
However, just in case my appeals to the greater humanity in all of us failed, my 5 would be:
Pat Metheny Group-- Pat Metheny Group
The Rising-- Bruce Springsteen
Kind of Blue-- Miles
Ah Via Musicom-- Eric Johnson
Individual Choice-- Jean-Luc Ponty
**then I would smuggle in:
Dancing in the Dragons Jaws-- Bruce Cockburn

Too many to pick from, but the ones that strike me today are:1) Prince--Sign O' The Times
2) AC/DC--Back In Black
3) Sting--Nothing Like The Sun
4) Joe Jackson--Look Sharp
5) Stevie Ray Vaughn--Greatest Hits

Loved his first three albums, then he went off on that big band/jazz tangent and was never the same.

Agreed. I could listen to "Look Sharp" until my ears exploded. Every song kicks ass.

This IS hard! I wanna pick 10 and sneak 5 of 'em onto the island with me. : /
1. Henry Mancini ~ Greatest Hits
2. Van Morrison ~ Astral Weeks
3. Astrud Gilberto ~ Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour
4. Ella Fitzgerald ~ The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Songbooks (I'm cheating just a bit with this one)
5. Yo La Tengo ~ Prisoners of Love

Hmmph! I can't imagine a life with ONLY 5 albums.

No iPods. CDs only.
