I created this thread for books that are technically interracial, but the characters are actually multi-racial. Please list books here where the characters fall into this category, including the link to the book, either by title or bookcover. That would possibly include the 'surprise, I'm actually part Black' storyline books.

Sweet Revenge (Friends and Lovers, #1) by Nadia Aidan by Nadia Aidan (hero is part Creole/part Middle Eastern and heroine is black)

Twist of Fate (Love Spectrum Romance) by Beverly Clark by Beverly Clark (a spoiler, but the hero is actually part black a couple generations back, even though this is marketed as BW/WM)

Danielle, you said that the book by Beverly Clark, the hero is part black a couple of generations back.

What color is his parents?

To me, if both the hero's parents are white, then he's white. It doesn't matter if he has a great grandfather that's black.

I'm black. But, I do have Native American/Indian blood running through my veins too. I do have some of their features.

My grandmother's mother - my great grandmother was half black/half Native American and she was married to a Native American. I think he was mixed as well, but I was told growing up he was a Native American.

On my grandfather's side, his mother was a mulatto bka biracial today. So, I have white running through my veins too, but I'm black. Both of my parents were black.

Sorry for going off topic Danielle. I just wanted to know about the hero.

JC (ainathiel) From what I have read, characters that have black ancestry but are not called black, are olive or tan complexion. They are darker than white but whiter than black. The character is called dark but think Greek or Italian.

But I wonder Arch, would you consider that book IR or would you say misleading advertising because of the character's great-great grand parents?

Jo, a black person with just black straight blood can have olive or tan skin.

When I was younger, I use to always think that Tall, Dark and Handsome was talking about a black man, because of the word dark. I'll never forget the day a white coworker of mine told me about her boyfriend, saying that he's tall dark and handsome. I thought he was black, until I've seen him and he was white.

Just as we have some light and dark skin black people, we have light and dark skin white people.

Now, as for the book Jo. If both of the hero's parents are white, I would say he's white. Again, I'm using myself as an example. I may have other blood running through my veins, but I'm black. Both of my parents are black.

Spoiler for Twist of Fate:

Arch, his grandmother actively hid her black heritage, so the hero was raised as a full white man. You could say she was passing. When he started getting involved with the heroine, she flipped out, especially since the heroine was pregnant by the hero, and she was afraid the baby would show his heritage. It was kind of crazy.

I just added the book here b/c some readers didn't consider it IR b/c the hero had black ancestry. Personally, I don't really like defining other people's races for them. Most of us are pretty mixed up racially, so it's kind of silly how important society makes it.

I always interpreted tall dark and handsome to apply to a man who had dark hair (plus or minus darker skin).

Thanks for explaining Danielle. The grandmother was biracial, she passed for 100% white, when she was actually 50% white. She married a white man and their child(ren) were mixed, and the hero's parent married a white person.

Some half white/half black people come out looking 100% white. To me, a biracial person is biracial.

I have a question. Say, the hero is half Asian and half White and the heroine is white. Would that be classified as interracial or multi-racial?

I know that a lot of mixed Asian/White people come out looking 100% Asian.

Danielle, really? I read that book like eons ago and totally forgot that part lol. I thought it was a bw/wm book. Ah well. I change the characters in my head all the time (am I the only one who changes a non-IR book into an IR one?) I probably did it with this one lol.

I agree though. There's no pure anything because we're all mixed up from tons of generations intermixing since the beginning of time so it seems moot to try to divide everyone up like so in society.

Arch, wasn't that the IR couple mix in Ice Blue? I remember Takashi was biracial, I believe. I'd say that was still IR, yeah?

Vickie Williams | 1 comments I would like to say for anyone who wants to read good interracial books dealing with black women and native american men, go to www.marilynlee.org. I have read all of her black indian romance books and they are lovely stories with beautiful endings. This is just to show that these books do exsits. I love her story lines because the black woman doesn't have to be mixed with white ancestory or gorgeous to be loved. I am not being racist just saying the sterotype is not in her storylines. They are real and honest. Please read these books and you'll see what I am talking about.

Black are those books relevant to the conversation? This is about multi-racial characters. It's not against the rules to post about your own books, but they certainly need to be germane to the conversation. From the description it doesn't sound like it.

A lot of people (myself included) have been using the term "East Indian" for the longest, with no offense intended. However, we have improved by utilizing the term "Native American" for our native brothers and sisters.
Since we are having this conversation, can we start utilizing the term "Multiracial Americans of African Descent" for Black People in America as well? What are your thoughts on this?

message 32: by Bleh (new)

Bleh | 1 comments I hope this group is still active. But I was just curious if anyone happened to read/heard of a bwwm novel where the hero is mixed- white & asian (either vietnamese or thai).

Im pretty sure the name of the book is Rein (or Rain which is the hero's name). The black woman's name is Rachael. They met in college and she secretly liked him but he was more so interested in another girl name Caroline (or Carolina). Fast forward a few years and she still has feelings for him but hes kinda still interested in Carolina.

I CAN NOT for the life of me find this book lol. I was searching sometime a few years back but still nothing. Please help T.T
