Oh no! You aren't like a rabid fan of hers are you? I honestly am curious, because I am a HUGE fan of hers and haven't gotten to this one yet.

message 1003: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) This is the first one of hers I read, and I enjoyed the first two-thirds of it for the most part, but walked away at the end asking myself why on earth I read it. The ending sank the entire experience for me.

message 1004: by Stefani (new)

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Ahhh I see, that really sucks! The other Gillian Flynn books I've read the ending has been what sealed it as a fabulous book. But I'm hearing very mixed reviews on this one, I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

message 1005: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished the 9th book in the Stephanie Plum series (and the best one so far) To the Nines (Stephanie Plum, #9) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

Now I'm reading Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCaig by Donald McCaig. It's Gone With the Wind from Rhett Butler's point of view.

message 1006: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCaig by Donald McCaig earlier today. Basically the storyline of the novel is Gone With the Wind from Rhett Butler's point of view and it was a bit of a disappointment really. Gone With the Wind is one of my favourite novels and I found all the characters in RBP, even the major ones of Rhett and Scarlett, are out of character. There is also a lot of errors that contradict the original, characters dying when they lived in GWTW and vice versa, Melanie knowing about Scarlet being in love with her husband, etc. As a standalone historical fiction novel, Rhett Butler's People is okay but as a complement to Gone With the Wind it sucks!

Now I'm about to start The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain by Diane Chamberlain.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Really, Ellie?!? Whoa. Didn't know about the inconsistencies.

message 1008: by Mary (new)

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments After taking a forced hiatus from the book world, it feels nice to be reading again.

I'm flying through Karen Marie Moning's Fever series and loving it. On Dreamfever (Fever, #4) by Karen Marie Moning at the moment and it's pretty intense. How did I not hear of this series and its awesomeness before? Ahhh.

Also started Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane , though it's taking a backseat to Mac's adventures in Dublin.

message 1009: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain by Diane Chamberlain just a few minutes ago. It's a brilliant read! It took me a couple of chapters to get into this novel but once I did I was hooked! Every time you think you've guessed the big secret, it moves to another level and you realise what you think you've guessed is only a tiny piece of the puzzle. I couldn't put it down!

Next I plan to read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck by John Steinbeck.

message 1010: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Yesterday I finished reading Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck by John Steinbeck. It's an extremely short but nevertheless fantastic novel. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The ending is so incredibly moving that I cried while reading it. I truly can't recommend this novel enough. John Steinbeck is an excellent author (and one of my favourite writers)!

Today I've started reading The Future of Us by Jay Asher by Jay Asher.

message 1011: by Kellyflower (new)

Kellyflower | 248 comments Ellie I remember reading it in school and crying.

It's been made into a movie 4 times.
I really liked the 1992 version with Gary Sinese & John Malkovich.

message 1012: by Kellyflower (new)

Kellyflower | 248 comments I'm 154 pages in to Wonder by R.J. Palacio by R.J. Palacio.
It's had my teary-eyed twice now.

message 1013: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Still finishing The Dressmaker The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott and enjoying it more than the speed with which I'm reading it would indicate. Also reading The White Monkey The White Monkey (The Forsyte Saga) by John Galsworthy which is the fourth of nine volumes of Galsworthy's Forsyte Chronicles -- Galsworthy is probably my all-time favorite author. Between this and the Alcott, I've got the first part of the twentieth century pretty well cornered at the moment. Reading The Book Thief The Book Thief by Markus Zusak for a challenge and am not far enough into it yet to know what I think of it. Started Losing Mum and Pup Losing Mum and Pup by Christopher Buckley which I've been meaning to read since Mom died in 2008 but Dad followed last year and I haven't been able to pick this up until now. Also reading Forever Liesl by Charmian Carr Forever Liesl which is a feel-good memoir of making "The Sound of Music" and is proving to be a quick read. Last and so far least, Savannah: Or a Gift For Mr. Lincoln Savannah Or a Gift For Mr. Lincoln by John Jakes which I expected to grab me a lot more than it has. Just finished A Walk Among the Tombstones A Walk Among the Tombstones (Matthew Scudder, #10) by Lawrence Block , Sand Sharks Sand Sharks (Deborah Knott Mysteries, #15) by Margaret Maron , and Rules of Civility Rules of Civility by Amor Towles within the last week or so. About R of C: stunning book. Edith Wharton meets F. Scott Fitzgerald.

message 1014: by Ugur (last edited Sep 17, 2012 10:04AM) (new)

Ugur (ugur_basak) I've finished a Turkish classic Kürk Mantolu Madonna by Sabahattin Ali, also write a review for this book.

Unfortunately it has only German and French translations. I hope one day it will be translated to English.

The book is really one of the best books i've read this year.

By the way, it has also translated to Chinese:) but not English.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments I am reading Other Systems by Elizabeth Guizzetti

I am enjoying it a lot, the story is good. But some parts of it have me thinking "wait, what?" and scratching my head.

message 1020: by Mary (new)

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Wow, that's a lot! :-)

I'm reading
Chocolat (Chocolat, #1) by Joanne Harris
by Joanne Harris for my book club. There are so many descriptions of chocolate - an absolute nightmare if you have a huge sweet tooth and you have no sweets in the house.

And I just started
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
by David Sedaris.

message 1021: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading The Future of Us by Jay Asher by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler earlier today. It's just an young adult romance but it's very entertaining and funny. I loved all the 1990's nostalgia!

Next I'm going to start reading a Stephanie Plum book: Ten Big Ones (Stephanie Plum, #10) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

message 1022: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Yesterday I finished Ten Big Ones (Stephanie Plum, #10) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich. It's the tenth novel in the Stephanie Plum series. This novel had a far more serious and darker tone than the other books. It was a gripping and exciting read with an excellent plot and great characters.

Right now, I'm a couple of chapters into The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier by Ian Serraillier. This is a re-read. I first read in when I was in school. I remember liking it but I don't remember much about the plot.

message 1023: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I managed to finished reading The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier by Ian Serraillier this morning. Now I'm reading The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks by Nicholas Sparks.

message 1024: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks by Nicholas Sparks a few hours ago. The book was a bit of a disappointment really. I've read most of Spark's books and I think I'm too used to his writing style. I found the plot of the story to be extremely predictable and slighty unrealistic. But if you've never read a Nicholas Spark novel before, you'd probably like it.

Now I'm about to start reading Ford County by John Grisham by John Grisham. It's the october monthly read in a Goodreads group I'm in and I want to get a head start on it.

I agree! Sparks needs to shake things up with his writing. All of his stories are starting to blend together.

message 1026: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading Ford County by John Grisham by John Grisham last night and this morning I've started The Birthing House by Christopher Ransom by Christopher Ransom.

Abby | 77 comments So I'm now about 10ch's into Ephemeral (The Countenance, #1) by Addison Moore and I gotta say... It's interesting to say the least...

message 1028: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I'm currently reading Dark Flame (The Immortals, #4) by Alyson Noel not that far into it yet.

message 1029: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I'm reading:
Kitty Foyle Kitty Foyle by Christopher Morley and The Caine Mutiny: A Novel of World War II The Caine Mutiny A Novel of World War II by Herman Wouk , the latter on audio, and the narrator sounds a little like Bogie when he reads the Queeg character, which I can't help thinking is deliberate. Also reading A Brew to a Kill A Brew to a Kill (Coffeehouse Mystery, #11) by Cleo Coyle , The Paris Wife The Paris Wife by Paula McLain and The Sister Queens The Sister Queens by Sophie Perinot -- so I'm kind of all over the map at the moment!

message 1030: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading The Birthing House by Christopher Ransom by Christopher Ransom this morning. This book was one of the worst horror novels I've read in my entire life. It wasn't even the slightest bit scary. The author's writing style is terrible and I felt like most of the book was written by a horny 12-year-old. The whole plot was confusing and I disliked all the characters. I ended up not really caring what happened to any of them. This book is definitely one to avoid.

Now I'm about to begin The Green Mile by Stephen King by Stephen King.

message 1031: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I just finished The Green Mile by Stephen King by Stephen King earlier today and I absolutely loved it. I'm a huge fan of Stephen King and The Green Mile has got to be one of the best novels he has ever written. In fact, it's one of the best novels I have ever read in my entire life. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down! It is very beautifully written and extremely moving at times. The plot is original, gripping and heart-breaking. I'd give this book more than five stars if I could! My full review is here.

Now I'm about to start The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson by Shirley Jackson.

message 1032: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Great review, Ellie! Yes, I loved that book (or collection of novellas when it first came out), too!

message 1033: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I just finished up Dreams of a Dark Warrior (Immortals After Dark, #11) by Kresley Cole and The Athena Effect by Derrolyn Anderson good books you should read both of them and now I'm onto Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia and an ARC of The Story of Jackson Haddock by Shanora Williams

message 1034: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I just finished re-reading Fifty Shades Trilogy Bundle Fifty Shades of Grey; Fifty Shades Darker; Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James . The first time I enjoyed the books, the second time, not so much... gosh they were so annoying sometimes...in introspect I can't believe I did like the characters and the dialogues the first time... oh well... that should teach me a lesson, not to re-read a book (or a trilogy, in this case) that wasn't that good in the first place.

Now I'm in the middle of All These Things I've Done (Birthright, #1) by Gabrielle Zevin , Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor and A Tale of Two Vampires (Dark Ones, #10) by Katie MacAlister (and procrastinating)

Next, I have The Rook by Daniel O'Malley in the waiting line

message 1037: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Earlier, I finished reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson by Shirley Jackson. I was disappointed by this book to be honest. I felt the novel did not live up to the reputation it has gotten. I just felt like it was missing something. Plus I disliked all the characters and the strange dialogue between them really annoyed me. This is one novel where the movie, or in this case movies, are better than the book. My full review is here.

Next I'm going to read The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches, #1) by Anne Rice by Anne Rice.

message 1038: by Ugur (new)

Ugur (ugur_basak) I'm currently reading The Time Regulation Institute by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar. It's really a very interesting and historical book.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Currently reading And All the Stars by Andrea K. Höst . So far I am really liking it. Some mild irritations with the beginning but now I am totally on board and loving it.

message 1040: by Gin (new)

Gin I'm reading Unclean Spirits (The Black Sun's Daughter, #1) by M.L.N. Hanover and enjoying it so far

message 1041: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Earlier today, I finished reading The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches, #1) by Anne Rice by Anne Rice. The Witching Hour is an extremely long novel, 1207 pages, but don't let that put you off reading as once you open the first page you soon find yourself completely absorbed in the chilling tale of the Mayfair Witches. This novel has a spellbinding, engrossing, well-written tale with complex and mysterious characters. There are plenty of compelling twists and turns in the plot to keep you interested and the suspense is drawn out to perfection. The novel is completely unpredictable, I found the ending to be quite a shock! My full review can be found here.

Now, I'm about to start The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving by Washington Irving and Frankenstein (Penguin Classics) by Mary Shelley by Mary Shelley.

message 1042: by Jodi (new)

Jodi Saylor | 98 comments reading haunted plantaions of virginia and also, mariana by susana kearsley.

message 1043: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Earlier I finished reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley by Mary Shelley. This novel turned out to be nothing like what I was expecting. I was expecting a generic horror story about a monster but what I got was so much more complex, it's actually quite a philosophical story really. I was extremely surprised and impressed by the actual story itself. I really enjoyed this book and I'm happy I finally got around to reading this classic. My full review is here.

I'm planning to read Eleven on Top (Stephanie Plum, #11) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich next.

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading Eleven on Top (Stephanie Plum, #11) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich this morning. Stephanie's adventures still make me laugh after 11 novels. There are so many hilarious and witty scenes in this book. But I have to admit I was a bit annoyed by Stephanie in this book. I just wish she'd finally choose between Joe Morelli and Ranger!

Now I'm reading The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton by Kate Morton.

message 1047: by Stefani (new)

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments In addition to Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman , I jst started The Fleshless Man by Norman Prentiss . It's kind of weird so far, and I'm not sure what the point was. I mean, you only got like 100 pages in this, move on!

message 1048: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Haven't been reading much in the last few months but things are starting to pick up again.

Iced (Dani O'Malley, #1) by Karen Marie Moning - Loving this! I'm actually enjoying this more than I did the previous books in the series. I love Dani's bravado and naivety. Refreshing! Some people are a bit put off by the sexual tension because Dani is only 14 but I don't mind. It's risque and fiction. Live a little!
