Shay | 923 comments Just started The Book of Blood and Shadow by Robin Wasserman by Robin Wasserman. Not impressed so far- it's not bad, but it's not great and it's over 400 pages long. Don't know if I'm up to 400 pages of mediocre- hope it gets better soon or gets so bad that I can just give up.

Sashana I just finished The Juliet Club by Suzanne Harper and I felt like it took me forever to read. Glad that's over.

Why didn't you give up on it? I've been putting a lot more books recently into the "Couldn't Finish" pile.

I really like that author. With the exception of her adult book that came out this year. Couldn't make it past 10 pages. Just awful.

message 705: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments Triangles by Ellen Hopkins is her adult novel. I can't put my finger on why, but she just can't write a novel for adults. Something about her style or something doesn't lend itself well to writing for adults. The whole tone of the book felt wrong.

Jessica Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein

I first read this book 2 years ago and fell in love with it. After several changes recently, I am rereading it for new perspectives. It seems to be one of those books that each time you read it, you get something different out of it. In a nutshell, I am loving it!

Sashana I've never read a book by Ellen Hopkins. I'm kind of ashamed to admit that because I read so much YA. The poem thing holding me back.

I got this one from the library last week. Now, I'm not so sure about it...

They are good though. You almost don't notice it, Sashana. They look like poems, but aren't really. At least not like Dickinson or Frost poems. They don't have any poetic elements, except for being freeform, that I can remember. Give one a try. They read really quick too.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Believe it or not they are actually series. But, by no means do you have to read them in order. If you are like me though it is something you just *have* to do or else it doesn't feel right. My favorites so far would have to be Crank (Crank, #1) by Ellen Hopkins and Glass by Ellen Hopkins ...which happen to be Crank #1 and #2 also. I started reading Tricks by Ellen Hopkins one time and then had to give it back to my friend before finishing it. Liked it, but haven't had a chance to revisit it.

It was Marissa's story that compelled me to keep reading.(Even though I knew each time it was from her POV, I was gonna feel sad and weepy.)
This is one of those books you either like, or you hate. I say like and not love, because I don't think you can love this story. It doesn't have that kind of feel to it.

I think, too, that it's hard to feel for adult characters sometimes. They screw their own lives. Children on the other hand, they usually get in bad situations because of other people. So, no matter their choices, you can still feel for them.

Lone Wolf will be the first Picoult book I read. I've heard so much about her other books- a lot of it negative- that I thought I'd try this book. Since it's too new for me to have developed any preconceived notions about it. Like I already really have the impression that My Sister's Keeper is overly dramatic, manipulative, etc. I figure if I like Lone Wolf, I can go on and read her other stuff.

I didn't have any luck with Lone Wolf probably because I was trying to read other books at the same time and it wasn't what I was expecting or wanting to read at the time. Although I like most of her other books. Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult and The Pact by Jodi Picoult are my favorites.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Just finished Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side (Jessica, #1) by Beth Fantaskey . It was decent enough. I picked it up while it was free. Nothing terribly impressive. Another book where a vampire swoops in, changes a girls life, and she falls madly in love with him. I mostly read it because my name was in the title.

I'm starting The Thief (The Queen's Thief, #1) by Megan Whalen Turner today finally. A bit late, but will probably add my thoughts to the discussion anyway.

I'm also still listening to Beauty Queens by Libba Bray in audio form. I had to take a break because I wasn't paying attention and the due date slipped past. Had to wait until I was able to recheck out the audio book again.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Just finished the audiobook of Beauty Queens by Libba Bray and absolutely loved it. I thought the story-line was hilarious and the narrator did an amazing job at portraying each character uniquely.

Still Reading: The Thief (The Queen's Thief, #1) by Megan Whalen Turner . I'm enjoying this, but having trouble getting myself to read much. I think it's the being sick.

Julia Shi (juliashi) i'm reading Into the Wild
i feel like skimming through it because i have so many other books that are waiting for me to read..
in my opinion, the book is mainly for kids but not for my taste. however, it's kind of wasting if i just stop reading and start another book.

Shay | 923 comments I just got Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth
Have to say, the first 1/5 of the book is kind of dull. It did pick up and I'm enjoying it now. I also think the romance angle is taking up too much time in the book. But, that was my least favorite thing about Divergent- don't understand why a book automatically needs a romance.

message 739: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Finished Touch of Power (Healer, #1) by Maria V. Snyder yesterday and thought it was pretty good. I'm intrigued to see what the author does with the 2nd book, although it doesn't come out until next year. This is why I don't usually start series until they are completely published :-P

I started reading Heat Stroke (Weather Warden, #2) by Rachel Caine finally and so far I'm not terribly impressed. I hope the story stops focusing on how orgasmic everything is and starts having a real plot soon. I'm tired of the swoony main character. I want action.

I also grabbed Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand in audio format. Something to listen to as I'm falling asleep at night.

message 740: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Series are starting to frustrate me. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but the wait time is ridiculous. By the time a sequel is released I've already forgotten the major details from the previous book except for the inevitable cliffhanger. But I don't think I could wait for all of the books to be published while everyone is raving. It's a Catch 22.

I agree with you about Jo from the WW series, Jex. I got tired of her halfway through book 1. She belongs in a ya book if she's that boy crazy.

message 741: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments She didn't bother me as much during book 1. I'm only about 50 pages into book 2 and am hoping the boy crazy fades off a bit. I'm hoping she'll get accustomed to the whole new body, new life thing and stop melting every 2 seconds.

This is exactly why I am going to read Graceling and Fire again before Bitterblue. It has been way too long and since my library is still processing Bitterblue, seems like a good time to re-read. Graceling and Fire will only be my second and third re-reads in my whole life time. I never re-read. A Walk to Remember is the only book I have re-read and I've read it about 5 times.

I couldn't do the WW series. I read the first one and knew from there I wouldn't like the others. I didn't like Jo at ALL.

I was thinking about rereading Insurgent. I just know I'm going to be confused but I don't know if I liked Divergent enough to reread it. I'm not a fan of rereading in general unless I absolutely loved the book to begin with or if I'm in a particular mood.

message 748: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments I liked Divergent, but I'm not sure about re-reading. I might just find a really good plot summary somewhere and read that. That is usually what I do, but I honestly wouldn't mind reliving Graceling and Fire. ;)

I'm reading Insurgent now. I don't think it's necessary to re-read Divergent. Like most sequels, it pretty much goes over what happened in previous books somewhere in the beginning.

Kristen | 223 comments I am reading A Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve right now. It's all right, but I feel like even though there are the same main characters in parts I and II, they are too different. Even the style of writing between the two parts seems too different; almost like reading an entirely different book. I am almost done, but I don't know what I will rate it yet.
