Meg Mims (httpwwwgoodreadscommegmims) | 12 comments The first 14-15 are the best. Julie Campbell started writing them (probably flat fee?) and then Kathryn Kenny - but after 15, the writing went so totally downhill. I have my set in HC from the 70's and bought a set for my daughter's library (we read them together when she was probably 7) and have some extras I'm willing to sell to a collector. The "cameo" versions are the rarest.

As for plots, the best was #4 The Mysterious Visitor in the early series, and The Mysterious Code was awesome too, along with the one set in NYC. Those are my faves.

14 - Secret of the Emeralds? was okay, and 15 I think was the one set in New Orleans, another okay one. When I was a kid, I'd save up my birthday $ and go to K-Mart to buy these HC's - I think they were $1.25 or maybe $1.75?? Gaah. Feel old, but they have some color illustrations. Probably couldn't find #16 or else that's when they changed to paperback? No idea. LOL - the Trixie Belden Fan Club on Goodreads!!

message 52: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Cantrell (elainecantrell) | 35 comments I agree about the writing, and personally I liked Julie Campbell better than Kathryn Kenny. When I read the second one I remember thinking how cool it would be to go out in a travel trailer hunting Jim. Which one is the one where Trixie pretended to like Honey's cousin Ben? I thought that one was just great.

message 53: by Meg (new)

Meg Mims (httpwwwgoodreadscommegmims) | 12 comments Oh, I remember that one!! There was a big storm, wasn't there? And something about a diamond ring getting lost. Hmmm. I'd have to look through the titles... I think it was Trixie Belden and the Mystery of Glen Road?? I could be wrong.

message 54: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Cantrell (elainecantrell) | 35 comments I think you're right. That's one of my favorites.

message 55: by Meg (new)

Meg Mims (httpwwwgoodreadscommegmims) | 12 comments I liked that one, but another favorite of mine is The Secret Code... that was genius of Trixie to put all the stick figures on the tags as a signal... ah, such fond memories! But the first book is still the best - such great character set-ups, and the whole rich girl/poor girl contrast, and the mansion... loved it!!

message 56: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Cantrell (elainecantrell) | 35 comments I tried writing in the secret code after I read that book.

Your favorite place to read? I usually read at home but the cemetary is a great 2nd choice (very peaceful)
Do you ever read in public? mom always said to set a good example!
Your book lending policy? I actually have a book check out system and I know they won't always come back perfect but I strongly feel that I get more bang for my buck when things are used often. And I love being able to share opinions with fellow readers... which can only happen if I let them read my favorites! I also don't get into "collectors/valuable" books.
Do you ever write in your books? not often but I do use a lot of white out tape! I often loan them to my mom, family and friends and would be embarressed for them to read some words. But mostly I white out when they use the Lords name disrespectfully.

Michael Vorhis (mike_vorhis) | 15 comments Your favorite childhood book? Outlaws of Ravenhurst!

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Only when one is for work and the other for pleasure.

Your favorite place to read? The South of France!

Do you ever read in public? Airports; Starbucks.

Your book lending policy? I'll gladly show up if book lending is going on!

Do you ever write in your books? No, it feels like defacing a work of art. (I even have a best-seller at home that I put down because I thought it a hack piece of work, and still I kept the dust cover unwrinkled. Of course it's possible I was thinking at the time that I'd eBay the thing off to some poor schmuck....)

Your favorite reading snack? Cafe Sua Da, or Heineken. (But not together.)

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? $160 when you count the speeding ticket en route to the bookstore....

Your favorite three genres? Suspense or Romantic Suspense, really great Humor, and I-don't-care-what-the-genre-is-as-long-as-it's-a-masterpiece.

Your three favorite books? To avoid a gratuitous plug I'll dodge this one....

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Tolkien's "Arwen," for her capacity for loyalty and heroic devotion. Also "Stands With a Fist" created by Michael Blake (who seems to be a GR author!), for the same quality.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? Again to avoid shameless plugs I'll fade off here....

:)

Michael Vorhis (mike_vorhis) | 15 comments Then let's just tell it like it is! "Henceforth, all University students shall read the following two novels, available in the University Bookstore at $49.99 each, by contemporary authors Elaine and Mike, *AND* shall turn in glowing reviews as required homework...."

I mean, come on now, is that asking so much?

message 64: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Cantrell (elainecantrell) | 35 comments No! Not asking too much at all!

message 65: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 62 comments Hi, I'm Nanci and I when I saw this group I just had to join. I am always looking for new romances to read that I can feel comfortable having in my home should one of my kids pick it up. I haven't read any of the discussions yet but I look forward to it.

Your favorite childhood book?I have so many favorite books I am having a hard time picking one. I think maybe it would be The Witch of Blackbird Pond or maybe Heidi.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? I always have more than one book going. At least one audio book and one book in hand.
Your favorite place to read? I like to read in bed but I listen to books wherever I go.

Do you ever read in public? I often read in public. I generally try to have a book with me so I can pull it out if I have to wait or have a little time.
Your book lending policy? I don't have people ask often but if someone wants to borrow a book, I will usually lend it after putting my name, address, and phone number in the cover.

Do you ever write in your books? Not usually.

Your favorite reading snack? I don't know that I have one. Generally when I really get reading, I forget to eat.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? I don't remember that. Usually under $15.00 but it depends on the book.

Your favorite three genres? Romance, Fantasy, Mystery in either young adult, children's, or adult.

Your three favorite books? This is just so hard to pick. Cotillion by Georgette Heyer, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, and The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?Hmmm, there are so many but Freddy in Heyer's Cotillion has always had my admiration because he is so good to the women in his life.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? I don't know the answer to that question.

message 70: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Gomez Farrell (thegourmez) | 6 comments Hi everyone, I'm wading over from Astraea Press, too. I'm also an author there. My clean romance novella is called Maya's Vacation, and I hope you enjoy it if you get the chance! Love that there are groups like this for those of us who don't need all the description to go along with our imaginations.

Your favorite childhood book? I give a different answer to this every time I'm asked! This time, I'll say the Search for Delicious from my younger childhood. One of my first fantasy books.
Do you ever read more than one book at a time? I am right now--Mark Twain's autobiography and Bitterwood, a fantasy. Usually, I don't though. You caught me at an exception!
Your favorite place to read? In my hammock.
Do you ever read in public? Sure, but not as often as I'd like.
Your book lending policy? Totally fine, but I will eventually ask for them back.
Do you ever write in your books? Only time I ever have was when I first starting reading my dad's old copies of the Lord of the Rings series in junior high--I was raised being told such books were evil, so I wrote a prayer to God in them to shield me from the evil. That tells you about my religious background!
Your favorite reading snack? I don't snack and read.
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? Over $100 for textbooks in college.
Your favorite three genres? Fantasy, Horror, Modern
Your three favorite books? Lord of the Rings Series, Cat's Cradle, The Sparrow
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables.
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? The Sparrow, though it would be hard for some people to get through--it's quite traumatic!

Rachel (thedoctorscompanion) I didn't even see this until just now! lol

Your favorite childhood book? hmm... I think the abridged illustrated version of Peter Pan. I read it multiple times!
Do you ever read more than one book at a time? ALL the time. Just look at my currently reading shelf.
Your favorite place to read? Maybe on my bed? I like reading alone for some odd reason.
Do you ever read in public? Yup, I read on my lunch break at work! lol
Your book lending policy? I don't really have one, but since I have had some trouble getting some back, I try to always make sure my address label or my name is on the inside cover before it leaves my house.
Do you ever write in your books? Usually I DO NOT do that, but one time I was really bored so I played a game on the empty pages in the back of the book with my friend. The book was about friendship, so it fit.
Your favorite reading snack? lol I don't have one, but I do eat while I am eating lunch a lot...
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? ummm....I bought one for my sister that was somewhere in the $teens.
Your favorite three genres? Fantasy, historical, romance.
Your three favorite books? A Passion Most Pure, Jane Eyre, and Wuthering Heights
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? SO many lol. Rochester, Heathcliffe ( I know I know...), Tamani from Wings, Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey, and the lesser known Captain Edmund Merrick from The Redemption.
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? oh I don't know! Maybe A Passion Most Pure? I almost said the Bible, but if God doesn't make us read it, who am I to force that upon others?

Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirl.com (miss_jana) Your favorite childhood book? - I loved the Sherlock Chick series by Robert Quackenbush.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? - Yes. I'm always reading at least 2 or 3 at a time, since I've been given a lot of books by publishers who want them read yesterday.

Your favorite place to read? - I have this cozy recliner with a fuzzy blanket I curl up in. It's the best place to read.

Do you ever read in public? - I have nothing against reading in public, I just don't usually have time to. If I'm in public, I'm shopping or eating or hanging with friends. I read in airports, though.

Perhaps 'The Little Princess' by Frances Hodgson Burnett? She doesn't have a mother--her father goes off to war and they think he's dead so they make her stay in the attic and become a servant to the other girls. She eventually finds him. I love this book!

Your favorite childhood book? probably Peter Rabbit but I also read all the Walter Farley books. Miss Potter is a very romantic love story...the movie. I cried over it and bought a copy.

Your favorite place to read? in bed

Do you ever read in public? yes, and I always have even in the lunch room in high school, on buses and planes...you name it

Your favorite reading snack? ice tea

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? around $100.00 for an art book that was required and I would spend $50.00 for Midnight Sun as I want it so bad. I read online what was available but I much prefer a book I can hold in my hand.

2. Afternoon of an Autocrat by Norah Lofts
3. Jassy by Norah Lofts

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?

Rhett Butler when I was 12 and 13

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?

Afternoon of an Autocrat by Norah Lofts...its also titled the Devil in Clevely but I do not like that name.

Lonesome Dove

message 83: by Teno (new)

Teno Q. Your favorite childhood book?
Umm..The Fudge series by Judy Blume? The Magic Tree House series? The Lost Locket by Carol Matas? I don't know, I was too young to form opinions on books, I guess?

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
Only if I'm on a tight schedule. Or if I have three books (and it has to be three) that I'm having trouble finishing at the same time. Then I just alternate between the three, and I get them done eventually!

Your favorite place to read?
Lying on a bed. I know, I know, lazy of me. I also like sitting on the hood of my mom's car, but then strangers stare at me as they walk by

Do you ever read in public?
On a bus, while I'm waiting to arrive somewhere, or when I'm waiting in a doctor's office. But usually, no. I find it hard to concentrate on the book. I like my peace.

Your book lending policy?
I only lend books to people I can absolutely trust to take care of them, and only if I really want them to read the book.

Do you ever write in your books?
Only old books that no one seems to care about or read anymore. Usually I don't though.

Your favorite reading snack?
Tea?

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
I don't spend much money on books, ha-ha. I get them used online or buy them from the library. Occasionally I buy on impulse from Chapters and end up spending $15 on a book I don't even read :$

Your favorite three genres?
Fantasy or Mythopoeia (the two are indistinguishable sometimes). I like all other genres equally.

Your three favorite books?
I have about 20.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
Where to start?
My latest one: Attolis Eugenides from Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series. Artemis Fowl, Numair Salmalin, Aaron Cole...

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
I wouldn't. I hate being forced to read something. I wouldn't make anyone else suffer unnecessarily.

Hurra for books! :)

message 84: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) Firstly, hi! I'm Thalia. (:

Your favorite childhood book?
--My favorite series was the Shadow Children series, by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I also collected Goosebumpbs books and Nancy Drew!

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
I try not to. I don't like having to focus on more than one story. It's different if I need to read a book for school, and then I have one I read for personal.

Your favorite place to read?
We have a guest room in the basement of our house and I love to read there. I try to read only out loud, because I feel like I get more out of the story that way, so I really like that nice, secluded spot.

Do you ever read in public?
Sometimes. Depending on what I'm doing. If there are people are me that I know, I would never just start reading. I think that's kind of rude. But if I'm by myself, waiting for something or someone, then why not?

Your book lending policy?
I lend books whenever people ask, but now I'm thinking I shouldn't. One girl has had my Clockwork Prince for several months now and she hasn't given it back yet. :/

Do you ever write in your books?
Never!! I couldn't do that to a book. I feel like it...defiles it, somehow.

Your favorite reading snack?
I don't usually snack when I read, but I'll try to have a glass of water or something nearby.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
Hmm...probably $25? If it's a new hardcover book that I desperately want, I'll hand out the cash for it.

Your favorite three genres?
Young adult, anything.
Fantasy/paranormal/dystopian.
Realistic YA fiction.

Your three favorite books?
I seriously cannot answer this question. B|

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
Hmm, there's a few. But I think I mostly want a Mr. Darcy to call my own.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
I think Pride and Prejudice. I think everyone should give it a shot at some point in their life, although I wouldn't force anybody to read it.

Do you ever write in your books? Nay
Your favorite reading snack? Goldfish, but the multicolored kind
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? 14.99
Your favorite three genres?Paranormal romance, Historical romance, romantic suspense
Your three favorite books? You mean series, Cynster Novels, Highland Romance by Hannah Howell,
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Bones from the Night Huntress Series.

Katherine (kathymeals) | 1 comments Hi, I have a favorite book from my childhood, and I love all of this author's books, so I am getting them for my great nieces and great nephews through a company that sells all of his books called "Early Moments", I believe. I know the name was "Early...something. The author's name is Dr. Suess, and I just loved his book "The Sneeches and Other Stories" when I was growing up, I believe that is the complete title. I have already handed my own book down to my niece (who had also read it growing up) and her two little girls. I had to patch it up a little, but I went to the local craft store and bought some heavy colored tape, just the right color, and had my brother fix it for them for Christmas, along with their other gifts.

message 87: by Collette (new)

Collette Scott (ColletteScott) | 15 comments Since I am new to the group, I thought I'd add my commentary here.

Your favorite childhood book?
Charlotte's Web

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?

Not if I can help it.

Your favorite place to read?

Anywhere I can!

Do you ever read in public?

Definitely

Your book lending policy?

I am all for lending and will give away occasionally. If I like it, I will share it!

Do you ever write in your books?

I did when I was in college, but it was always in pencil.

Your favorite reading snack?

I don't usually eat while reading.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?

If college books count, $200. I have also purchased hardcover new releases, but don't do that much anymore now that I'm an e-reader.

Your favorite three genres?

Romance - historical or contemporary
Women's fiction - especially ones that can make me cry.
Adventure/thriller

Your three favorite books?

Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
Return of the Native - Thomas Hardy

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?

I'd have to see Brandon Nicholson, one of my own characters from my first novel. I thought he was awesome and loved writing him.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?

This may sound cheesy, but I would say The Berenstain Bears series.

Feel free to elaborate on your answers!

I am a strong believer in living a respectful and gracious life, and I read all of these books to my children because each one had a realistic situation and a great message following. I feel as though if you teach your children from a young age, they can grow to be respectful, honest, and trustworthy adults!

Your book lending policy? I usually don't keep my books long enough to lend out. Shelf space is at a premium! Most books are immediately put on Paperback Swap once I've read them. But I will lend out if I have it.

Do you ever write in your books? No.

Your favorite reading snack? I don't normally eat while reading.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? Besides text books? Not much. I doubt I've ever spent over $20.

Your favorite three genres? As far as fiction goes: Fantasy, classics, suspense. I read a decent amount of various non-fiction as well.

Your three favorite books? Very hard to narrow it down to 3, but let's say Jane Eyre, 1984, and Howl's Moving Castle.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? Nothing. As others have said, forcing anyone to do anything is an almost certain way to get them to hate it.

Christine Jensen (chrisjensen) | 13 comments Your favorite childhood book? Hmm.. probably Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree
Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Yes, often! On my e-reader and physical books!
Your favorite place to read? The bath :)
Do you ever read in public? yep, regularly
Your book lending policy? Happy to!
Do you ever write in your books? Just my scriptures.
Your favorite reading snack? Um, anything yummy and a Dr Pepper
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? Not sure.
Your favorite three genres? Cozy Mysteries, clean romance, Regency Fiction
Your three favorite books? Pride and Prejudice, The Rhea Jensen series (I know, you said book, but I can't pick just one of the series), The Visions of Ransom Lake by Marcia Lynn McClure
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Dr Darcy, Gilbert Blythe and Captain Wentworth (yes again, I am breaking the rules here by listing more than one, but hey...rules are made to be broken, right?)

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? not sure here, I kind of like to think that everyone should read what they love. Reading should be fun and requiring something all of a sudden makes it less enjoyable.

Feel free to elaborate on your answers!

Hello, everyone! My name is Alexandra, and I'm a YA author. I've written a few books, and have more coming. If you'd like to check them out, click on my Goodreads page: Alexandra Lanc

I'm so glad I found this group! I love good, clean romance, and unfortunately, it is too hard to find. :(

1. Your favorite childhood book?

I would definitely say: The Thief Lord. It's still my favorite, in fact, and the first "novel" I ever read.

2. Do you ever read more than one book at a time?

Usually now, though I didn't used to. I tend to get more done that way, because when I don't want to read one story, I have another to fall into for a bit. :)

3. Your favorite place to read?

On the couch under a light, or in my big, comfy chair. On the porch is also nice.

4. Do you ever read in public?

Of course! I'm always reading (or editing) at my local bookstore.

5. Your book lending policy?

If I lend a book out, the person with it has to take care of it -- no bent covers, dog-eared pages, or anything of the sort.

6. Do you ever write in your books?

Not usually. Every once in a while I will highlight a passage or sentence I like, though, but not often.

7. Your favorite reading snack?

Dark chocolate, or salt and vinegar crisps. :D

8. What's most money you've ever spent on a book?

Hmmm...I'd say around $30.00.

9. Your favorite three genres?

YA (why I write it), romance, and science-fiction/fantasy

10. Your three favorite books?

The Thief Lord, Frankenstein and Dracula

11. Fictional character you're secretly in love with?

Definitely Artemis Fowl, from Artemis Fowl. He has a strange personality, but I still love him. :)

12. If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?

That would be hard, since everyone has their own opinion, and their own taste.

Really? That's funny... for me it's what made me want to read the book. I never had but my kids had. Usually though, if I read a book first, the movie never does it justice.

message 99: by Susan (new)

Susan Denney (goodreadscomsusan_denney) | 13 comments Your favorite childhood book? Half Magic by Edward Eager. Such a lovely book and it was a fun thing to find out that a friend of a friend did the wonderful illustrations.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Absolutely. But my husband is really the master at this. He has books all over the house. A favorite gift for him is a new bookmark.

Your favorite place to read? Bed, definitely bed.
Do you ever read in public? I have read for Librivox but haven't had much time lately since I've been writing my own novels. Librivox is awesome. You can download free audiobooks. I've also done story hours for children.

Your book lending policy? We only lend books we never intend to see again.

Do you ever write in your books? Unless they are rare books (and we have so few of those) I don't mind marking a book in pencil. Highlighting and pen are not cool for me.

Your favorite reading snack? Reading and eating tend to be a dangerous combination for me. So, for the most part, I try to keep them separate. The exception is eating over lunch!

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? Maybe 50? I can't remember exactly but it was a rare edition poetry book. My husband is a poet and is a huge fan of contemporary poets.

Your favorite three genres? For entertainment: Regency romance, fantasy, young adult. But I also love books I can sink my teeth into and that don't fit into a genre at all. Also, well-written nonfiction. And children's books of all kinds. (That's more than three, isn't it?)
Your three favorite books? Impossible to say. But if you want the books most read and re-read, my church hymnal! I'm an organist. The scriptures. And Persuasion by Jane Austen. I actually try to re-read all her books each year.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Lord Peter Wimsey!

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? Snarky and Sweet (Just kidding! That was a shameless plug. But I'd love it if more people discovered my new novel.) In all seriousness, a dictionary in whatever language a person speaks. The more words you have, the more power you have to understand.

I started writing romance novels because I got so tired of starting one and then having to put it down because it was so racy. And the clean ones seemed so boring. My goal in the romantic comedies I write is to produce a book both witty and clean. A book I would want to read, in fact.

I'm excited to be here. I look forward to discovering lots of new books.

Do you ever write in your books?

Your favorite reading snack?
Milk. I don't know why, but I just love drinking milk when I read...

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
15-17$

Your favorite three genres?
Fantasy, Amish fiction, and I think I'm starting to like distopian.

Your three favorite books?

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
