*Your favorite place to read? In bed
*Do you ever read in public? Yes

Do you ever write in your books? I can't write in a book.
*Your favorite reading snack? Chocolate or Sunflower seeds
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? I have been buying books from the libraries for 12 years. Starting at 10 cents each for paperbacks and 3 for $1.00 hardbacks. Now, paper backs are 4/$1.00 - 5/$1.00. It depends on which library I go to. Hardbacks 50 cents each - 3/$1.00. It depends on which library I go to. Newer hard cover books $1.00 and oversized paperback 50 cents.
*Your favorite three genres? Contemporary

*Fictional character you're secretly in love with? I love Sam Starrett.
*If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? Gone Too Far.
Your favorite childhood book?
A toss-up between The Aristocats and Where the Wild Things Are
Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
Um...yeah. I've never been able to read just one book at a time.
Your favorite place to read?
Curled up in my hubby's recliner.
Do you ever read in public?
Of course.
Your book lending policy?
As long as I get it back, I'll lend a book to almost anyone. My valuable out-of-print titles, not so much.
Do you ever write in your books?
Depends on the book. Research books, heck yeah. Others, why would I?
Your favorite reading snack?
Um...tea...? lol
What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
I paid $225 for a box of Patricia Veryan books once. I think there were 24 or 25 books in it. Some of them were only worth a few dollars but a few were ones I would have had to pay upwards of $30 each. After selling off the ones I already had, it came out better than it sounds. Other than that, I've spent upwards of $20 for research books.
Your favorite three genres?
Historical romance, fantasy, mystery/thriller.
Your three favorite books?
Tough one...probably Holt's On the Night of the Seventh Moon, Veryan's The Mandarin of Mayfair, and a toss-up between Chase's Lord of Scoundrels, Chesney's The French Affair and Stuart's Lord of Danger. On second thought, those are all tied with a billion other books.
Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
Lord Derringer from my own books. Although, that's not much of a secret.
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
I wouldn't want to make any book required reading. I have too many control issues as it is.

-Charlotte's Web, hands down. I was also obsessed with the Babysitters' Club
Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
-Sometimes, but usually not more than one fiction book at a time
Your favorite place to read?
-In bed late at night while everyone else is sleeping. No distractions!
Do you ever read in public?
-I read everywhere
Your book lending policy?
-I love to share books
Do you ever write in your books?
-Only research-type books
Your favorite reading snack?
-Candy (this is definitely a problem for me) :)
What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
-Probably $25. I read pretty quickly so I have a hard time justifying spending money on books. I practically live at the library.
Your favorite three genres?
-Romance, Regency, Young Adult
Your three favorite books?
-All Jane Austen, but especially "Sense and Sensibility", All of the Harry Potters, "Gone With the Wind", most of Georgette Heyer (wait, that's more than 3!)
Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
-Hmm....hard to pick one. I'm a sucker for the Regency male (but who isn't?)
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
-I hate required reading; makes me feel like I'm back in school. Read whatever you want!!

Your favorite childhood book? - "The Witch of Blackbird Pond".
Do you ever read more than one book at a time? - Often 3-4. One romance, one non-fiction, and one non-romance fiction - then I just pick up whatever I'm in the mood for. Usually another audio book in the car too.
Your favorite place to read? - The loveseat in my living room.
Do you ever read in public? - Almost never leave the house without a book - just in case there's time to read.
Your book lending policy? - I have a couple of friends I know will return them. Other than that I don't lend unless I don't care if I get them back. I've been burned too many times!
Do you ever write in your books? - Never. I use little post-it flags to mark stuff if I'm reading for my book club.
Your favorite reading snack? - Don't really snack while reading. Love a Sonic drink (Coke or Cherry Limeade), though.
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? - Probably about $40.
Your favorite three genres? - Regency romance, nonfiction, historical mystery
Your three favorite books? - "Pride and Predujice" (Jane Austen - of course!); "With This Ring" (Carla Kelly); "The Ideal Bride" (Nonnie St. George)
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? - Mr. Darcy is the obvious one, but I'm also a sucker for Patricia Veryan's "stiff Upper lip", incredibly brave, self-sacrificing, self-deprecating heroes.
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? - Just read "The Help" and it really touched me, so that would be the one this week.

More then one book at a time? Of course. I not only read different types of books at the same time (fiction and non-fiction or reading with my husband or kids or alone) but I sometimes read 2 fiction books at a time by myself. My husband is always bewildered by that.
My favorite place to read is on either on the couch in my south facing back room during the winter (the sun hits it just right and makes it so nice) or in my bed.
I read in public whenever it is possible (it is less so these days now that I'm usually with at least one of my girls.) My husband and I read out loud to each other in public too when we get the chance.
I'm happy to lend books to people whenever they are interested.
I never write in a book unless it is a book for study. I wrote in text books in collage and now I mostly write in church related books for study (scriptures, lessons, etc).
My favorite snack for anything is chocolate in any form.
I'm afraid I had to spend up to $75 on several of my text books in school (thankfully I re-sold most of those). I don't really collect valuable books (I'm more of a public library/paperback/ebook fan these days)
My favorite three genres would have to be: Regency romance, fantasy, and historical fiction.
My favorite three books? EEK! That's almost as hard as my favorite book as a child. My list has to be topped with Pride and Prejudice. After that things get difficult. I really love the Scarlet Pimpernel, but anything by Georgette Heyer is also good. I also love the Harry Potter books, and the Lord of the Rings books are great. . . .Oh dear, I could go on and on.
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? - Well my husband could tell you that he shares my love with Mr. Darcy and Sir Percy Blakeney.
If I could make a book required reading what would it be? I don't know, there are so many I would really recommend (one is "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" a recent re-read of mine that I think people really should give a try), but I can't say there is one that I would want to be required.

Not a lot of people have read The Ideal Bride. What a hoot! Have you wear her other book?"
Yes, I have and I liked it too, but not quite as much. I guess she isn't writing anymore? I haven't ever seen anything else.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? - Generally only if it's a fiction and a non-fiction or two similarly different genres. Otherwise, it's too difficult to keep everything straight in my head.
Your favorite place to read? - Curled up on the sofa or in my bed.
Do you ever read in public? - Yes. I'll always take a book with me to appointments or other place where I might have a long wait.
Your book lending policy? - I'm rather picky about my books, so I usually only lend to trusted individuals who I'm pretty sure will return them and in the same condition they got them.
Do you ever write in your books? - Never
Your favorite reading snack? - I don't usually eat while reading.
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? - Around $30 for an OOP copy of Lorraine Heath's Always to Remember.
Your favorite three genres? - Outside of romance I read a little bit of everything, and can't say that I have any particular ones that are favorites. My favorite sub-genres of romance are historical, contemporary and paranormal.
Your three favorite books? - It's really hard to pick just three. I guess I'll go with Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, and Always to Remember by Lorraine Heath.
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? - Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series.
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? - There are a lot of books I would encourage others to try at least once, but I don't know if I would want to require them to read it. I think people get more out of books when they read what suits their tastes.

Do I ever read more than one book at a time!? Most definitely! My husband and some friends think I am crazy, but I like to read a variety.
My favorite place to read is in the sun, on the beach! Or anyplace out in nature. Before bed is also a favorite. It helps me fall asleep. I have problems falling asleep otherwise.
Do you ever read in public? I read in waiting rooms, on buses, even at restaurants, if I am alone.
My booklending policy? I am not sure I have one. I am perfectly willing to lend books. I am afraid to borrow books, as I forget who I got them from. I have to pencil in it the name of the person, and I am a slow reader.
Do you ever write in your books. I like to put my name in a book and the date I got it, and later the date I read it, so that I remember that I did finish it! LOL I do enter that info in pencil since joining Book Swap.
Your favorite reading snack? I don't usually snack while reading, but when I go to the beach, I take a snack break from reading. I am sloppy eating and don't want to mess up the book.
What's the mos money I've ever spent on a book? It is less and less all the time, but other than text books in college, I probably never have paid more than $18.00. I do the library and ereaders on my Nook now. Or get a swapped book.
Your favorite three genres: Fantasy, young adult and romantic historical fiction.
Right now, my 3 favorite books are The Hunger Games, I Am Number Four, Two Moon Princess. Those are off the top of my head. I am reading Matched right now, and am loving it. There are just so many good books out there.
Fictional Character secretly in love with? Hmmm... several of the Inkheart characters: the daughter, her father, the firethrower, the boy from the 40 Thieves. Hard question.
One book I would like to require? Hmm... Dave Pelzer books: the true stories about The Lost Boy, and his other books are such and inspiration for youth of today. Dave did not let all the bad things in his life hold him back, or blame others. He was responsible for his success in life.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Right now I'm reading Treasure Island, The Thirteenth Tale, and Fablehaven II. And since the time I started the first two, I have read three of the Percy Jackson novels. Treasure Island I like to take it slow and enjoy it. The Thirteenth Tale I love so much I'm afraid to finish it.
Your favorite place to read? I will read anywhere. As a kid/teen I would lay in bed. As long as I have chocolate, I don't care where I am.
Do you ever read in public? All the time. Waiting for the doctors, standing in line... I'm not afraid.
Your book lending policy? There is only one person that ever borrows any books, and she's much more responsible than I am.
Do you ever write in your books? I write my name and the date I finished it. If I'm going to give it to a thrift store or something I'll leave a note in it for the next person.
Your favorite reading snack? Chocolate. Specifically, Hershey's Nuggets. Either milk chocolate, milk choc with almonds, or the creamy toffee kind. Love me some chocolate.
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? I'm cheap and poor, so about $15. I go through most books fast so I prefer to borrow them. If we bought every book I read we'd be even poorer.
Your favorite three genres? I love a little of everything. Some days I'll read a romance, others I want a little Sci-fi. It changes with my mood/maturity level.
Your three favorite books? East by Edith Pattou, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, and the third one changes frequently. Today it's Percy Jackson novels. Tomorrow it could be Mockingjay.
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Royce Westmoreland from Judith McNaught(y)'s Kingdom of Dreams. The book makes me blush, but *sigh*...
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? That's hard. There are a few religious ones I'd suggest because they are what I believe, but to make it required would make some people push it away. I'll just go with Falling Up by Shel Silverstein. You can't go wrong with poetry for kids.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? didn't use to but do now
Your favorite place to read? on my swing in the backyard
Do you ever read in public? YES. My motto is never to be without a book.
Your book lending policy? would if someone asked but I get most of mine from the library so I don't own many.
Do you ever write in your books? If I give them as a gift I write to and from with a personal note.
Your favorite reading snack? don't read and eat unless it is lunch.
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? not sure I used to buy Danielle Steel the day they came out - $24.99?
Your favorite three genres? christin fiction, amish, clean romance
Your three favorite books? I love you forever, can't pick - way too many
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? I love the Baxter family (Karen Kingsbury) and I would love to live in Cedar Cove (debbie macomber) or Cape light (thomas kinkade)

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Hardly. I dislike it, for not giving a book the respect it deserves, but I must occasionally for school and such.
Your favorite place to read? Anywhere, everywhere.
Do you ever read in public? Why wouldn't I? Of course I do!
Your book lending policy? I rarely have books (Library, baby!), but I'm always happy to share books with people. :)
Do you ever write in your books? Rarely, sometimes in books I read in school...
Your favorite reading snack? Anything easy.
What's most money you've ever spent on a book? Erm, $17 I believe, for my brother.

Your three favorite books? Nah. I don't do favorites.
Fictional character you're secretly in love with? the Beast
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? Erm... I wouldn't-- everyone has their own tastes.

Usually but one always dominates my time
Your favorite place to read?
In my bed or a comfy chair.
Do you ever read in public?
Always.
Your book lending policy?
Sadly, I have developed a fear of lending books. Whether it’s because people don’t give them back or because they destroy them, and so on, I’d rather just give them a list of recommendations or buy the book for them.
Do you ever write in your books?
Only if they are textbooks that I bought for school, otherwise never.
Your favorite reading snack?
Mini marshmallows.
What's the most money you've ever spent on a book?

Oh my gosh, I totally do that, too. Even library books. It really bothers me to find typos in books.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Not really. I sometimes take a sabbatical from a really long book (a Dickens, for instance) to read something shorter and lighter for a little while, though.
Your favorite place to read? In bed. I don't know why, but I often find it easier to read at night. My imagination just seems to work better in the dark, as opposed to daytime when there are so many distractions!
Do you ever read in public? Sometimes.
Your book lending policy? Pretty much all of my friends are responsible, book-loving people, so I have no qualms in lending them my books. I generally make sure the books are covered in plastic first, so that the cover gets knocked around as little as possible.
Do you ever write in your books? No!!! I would never do such a thing to my precious books! Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Henry Tilney. . . <3 <3 <3
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? I don't know. . . I always hated being told what to read! I was homeschooled, and I read the classics because I wanted to, not because my teacher (Mummy, LOL) made me. If I had been made to read them, rather than discovering and enjoying them of my own accord, I don't think my love of literature would ever have been able to develop! Human nature's a funny thing, isn't it? :P

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? All the time!

Your favorite place to read? in bed
Do you ever read in public? yes

Do you ever write in your books?..." Yes, my books are highlighted and in the front I write my name and the first day I read the book, then under that the second time I read the book. Now my pages have stars with notes for neverending questions. If a book is very valuable like Werner Lind's book I do not write in it. He autographed it for me so I have to keep it in pristine condition. My copy of Penmarric probably has the most notes. I even keep some books in freezer bags in order to keep them in mint condition. I have a first edition of a Daphne Du Maurier.

I also had a huge crush on Jamie Fraser in Outlander, then had to cut that short when it came to the wedding night chapter. Had gracefully bow out of that one. Not a clean romance, ya see. But I didn't know that til it was too late.

Well Mr. Darcy of course, but it’s no secret. Nat from Witch of Blackbird Pond. Gilbert Blythe. Wesley from The Princess Bride. Kester Woodseaves from Precious Bane.
If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
I’m going to say A Thousand Splendid Suns. It changed me.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? I never used to, but once I started reading more...boring books, I add a mix. So right now, I'm working on a biography and a nonfiction and then have read several fun fiction books in between. And of course, I'll mix my scripture reading in there as well.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? Probably the Hunger Games, just because it is fun and there are important topics to pull out of it, if you want to think that deeply.

Did you find the Pink Carnation series clean? It looks interesting, but is not on the bookshelf. I'd love to know!

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
The Giver...it's probably required at some schools already, but it wasn't at mine. It was very thought-provoking for me.

Kat,
I know this question wasn't addressed to me but I thought I would tell you. :-) The Pink Carnation Series are not clean. Every book but the second to last one have had at least one sex scene in them. They are pretty mild and easily skipped but they are still there.
Hope that helps.

From the standards based in this group that I've read, I would not classify The Pink Series as "clean." Based on my personal standards, I do think they are clean and well worth the read.
Like Cortney mentioned above, the sex scenes are really mild. I discovered the series in the "General Fiction" section, which is what justified my first purchase and was instantly hooked.
They are not bodice-ripper novels, where the author is using every excuse to get the two to hook up. So you've got to go with your own judgment. And they are not overly descriptive. The scenes are meant to further along the relationship, not get the reader's blood pumping.
However, Mischief of Mistletoe, by Lauren Willig, is clean (it's sort of a divergent book from the series). And it's really fun read!

I never really read books as a child other than the Bible.
