Annie (themadnessofhamsters) Hi Pam
Just to let you know, I've finished all the Quinn books about the Bevelstokes, et al... based on your rec of What Happens in London. I completely *heart* these books.

Also read Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail. I also *heart* Bill Bryson! Just a wonderful way of writing - allowing the story to come through, and his pesonality and opinions.

Thanks for the recs! I may get some more read soon.

The next rec I'm planning to read is Halfway to the Grave. =))

Oh yeah the Fever books are great. I would highly recommend the series. You will see more of Vlane and Jericho Barrons in the next books. The very mysterious, enigmatic Jericho Barrons. Hmmm. I am up to the last book, which I can't wait to get and I am still not sure what's up with him.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it Nandar. That's beauty of Barrons, sometimes you want to smack him and other times you want to kiss him. I'm not going to give anything away though :). Now's a great time to read the series b/c the final book comes out this month. Yay!

Enjoy Halfway To The Grave, you have some really great reads this month.

message 429: by Stormy (new)

Stormy | 144 comments Photojim,

I finished Simply Irresistible and I have to tell you that it had two strikes against it right away: 1) It takes place in Seattle and 2) it's about hockey. Normally, these two things would be in its favor (I live in Seattle and I AM hockey) and in fact, soften me towards an author's debut novel, except clearly (based on this book) Rachel is an armchair hockey fan (at best), has never met a Canadian (French or English), a Russian nor a goalie. I'm not even sure she's met a 6 year old and certainly not one raised in Bellevue. I thought the "Hero" was a jerk and don't really understand exactly WHEN he realized that he respected the "heroine" (was it all the times he called her babydoll and patronized her or maybe between all the ridiculous lies he told her?)

It could have been a great book. I wanted to LOVE it. But they say that you should write what you know, I wish Rachel had heeded that advice. There's a whole SERIES of Seattle Chinook books that I'm going to have to suffer through? Oh my. Maybe as she writes them she actually does some research. Sigh. Thanks for helping me get this one off my TBR.

I'm going to start Just the Sexiest Man Alive a little later this month.

D.G. | 4477 comments Kerste wrote: "There's a whole SERIES of Seattle Chinook books that I'm going to have to suffer through? Oh my."

If you didn't enjoy the first book, just don't continue the series! It's not worth a stroke. :p

I'm reading one of my recos and I'm having problems with it. I just HATE the heroine with a passion and I really don't care what happens with her. I just wish that she would continue being a jerk and live her life unhappily ever after. As if anybody cares!

I'm happy to hear that Pam, glad you liked the book, it was a light, fun read, and the characters were not annoying at all, which is pretty rare for me.

message 432: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 4413 comments Jim, I finished Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake, and I liked it, but wasn't awed by it as I was led to expect - and those darn expectations are probably what left me wanting something more; guess I put too much pressure on a new-to-me author.

Ladykiti, I'm currently reading/listening to your recommendation, Judgment in Death. I'll come back with an update when I'm done.

I am actually a hockey fan. I am about to be a patronizing jerk, but I gave Ms. Gibson a pass on the sports part of the book because, hey, it's a romance book. What do you expect? I've read some of the rest of the series. No, she doesn't get any better with the hockey. So if you are going to hold that against the book, save yourself the trouble.

And if you thought Kowalsky was a jerk, wait till you meet Jason Andrews! One of the reasons I liked Just the Sexiest Man Alive is because he is a conceited jerk who is terribly surprised when he is not the center of the universe. Often in romance novels the uber-famous movie star is really just a shy quiet person who is misunderstood and portrayed badly by the media. Not in this case. And yet the heroine is a strong character who holds her own. That is what I like. (And for the record, I actually liked Georgeanne Howard as a heroine - except for the not telling the father about the baby part. That's just wrong no matter what.)

What are you reading now? As you know, I'm having a similar problem with Francesca Day in Fancy Pants. Though my wife says my opinion will change in about another 50-75 pages. we'll see.

message 447: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bexsi) | 812 comments Trixie, I have read Angels' Blood Fresh and original but it didnt grip me from the start. The Relationship Between Elena and Raphael– Nalini Singh knows how to keep her readers guessing on the romantic front. She sets the lovers up against seemingly impossible odds and manages to forge a believable, satisfying relationship between them while still remaining true to the essence of their characters. The obstacles in the way for Elena and Raphael to have a successful relationship are not long held grudges and overblown misunderstandings of other romance novels, but real cultural and physical divides that have strong repercussions on their relationship.
and Halfway to the Grave Cat is a fiesty, engaging and compelling heroine. The reader is also introduced to the sensual and strong-willed Bones early on in the book. The developing beautiful relationship between Cat and Bones is a delight to read. This novel is an action packed page turner, which keeps the reader enthralled. I love the pace of this book, especially when it gathers speed towards it's exciting end
